This movie really highlighted the evil social practices that used to happen in Bengal in the past. Child marriage, enforced widowhood, sati (killing widows in their husbands' pyre), purdah (veil), dowry, female infanticide, femicide, domestic abuse, r@pe and the practice of polygamy.
Bulbbul actually died in pain when Mahendra was r@ping her but she regained her life as a demonic being, known as daini or dakini in Hindu mythology, (Dakini is the demonic devotee of Goddess Kali) with the power of the terrifying image of the divine feminine mother goddess of protection, destruction and time, Kali.
Bulbbul gave justice to the women who suffered by killing the men who exploited them, abused them and made their life miserable.

@@akkkkk813 The movie didn't focus on Sati Pratha because the Thakurs weren't Brahmins. Sati Pratha was mainly practiced by Brahmins, in fact, there was a sect of Brahmins called Kulin Brahmins (kulin: burden-bearer) who used to marry hundreds of girls in their lifetime, all to be burnt alive in their husband's pyre when the Brahmin dies. People let the Brahmins marry their girls because the girls were considered a burden due to financial crises, social stigma and they thought that God would forgive their sins if they give their daughters to the supposed godmen who were the actual demon in disguise. This practice was prevalent during that era. There were subtle hints about Sati Pratha in the movie too.
Binodini wasn't a Brahmin so she had to go though enforced widowhood, she was stripped of all of her rights, property, beauty, hair and even colours. Widows were only allowed to wear white, eat veg food and forced to fast every Ekadashi (11th day of the Lunar cycle). They weren't allowed to keep hair and were forced to lead a life full of misery.

@@akkkkk813 There was a village boy who urged Bulbbul to help because his father had married another woman despite already having a wife. The man later kicked his first wife out of their house and then she committed suicide. Bulbbul killed the man to avenge the woman's death.

This movie refers to a lot of practices that used to happen back in the ages that are difficult for foreigners or even non-Bengali Indians to understand. So, here are some informations to help you guys catch up. Little girls, aged 7 or 8 were married off to young men who were in their 20s or even older men, which was a common practice during the 1800s and the years before that. Rich, old or middle aged men would usually marry poor girls to take the load off of the girl's parents. Here, in this movie the girl, bulbbul(which is the name of a bird) belongs to a rich family, hence was married off to a young man. The women who would get married would usually be aged similar to a devar (brother in law) and as they would spend their teenage years together, they would often get attached to each other being of the same age. This was more common than you would think during that time, especially in the upper-class families. Here, Satya and bulbbul are same aged and they grow closer to each other over the years, when they were growing up. Also, you'll see a similar relationship between Binodini(The elder sister in law) and Milord or thakurmoshai(Bulbul's husband). This is what Thakurmoshai means when he says to bulbbul - "You'll understand the difference between a brother in law and a husband, when you grow up." Referring that one is for pleasure and the other one is for title and responsibility. But, Bulbbul and Satya were just friends, but Thakurmoshai couldnt bear it and hit her, she understood the reason to his jealousy and held no rage against him. But when, Mahinder raped her in that condition, she died and took birth as Daini or Dakini (the demonic side of Godess Kali) and took revenge against all those who needed to be punished.

Actually the things shown in this movie only reflect Bengali culture which is still very nuanced, it dose not account for the entirety of India.
Like The thing in the beginning they showed where she is making the little girl wear the toe ring, it’s usually worn for various reasons not because they want to control the girl.

mehh, still a symbol of patriarchy though, despite whatever medical reasons it might possess, since it is to be worn only by a married woman like a symbol of her belonging to her husband.

It felt incomplete too many things could have been explored more tbh. But the whole setting, cinematography, and VFX were top notch Love your review and commentary on this.

Binodini may be a villain, but think of having to marry that mentally ill brother, just to be his caretaker.

Child marriage was a result of 1000yrs colonization & struggle, people rushed to protect their daughters getting her married in such young age but child marriage didn't exist before mughal attack on India, instead men & women had to be 24yrs of age to be eligible to marry and we Hindus of all caste had the custom of Swayamvar where a lady who doesn't have a lover would invite eligible bachelors through messengers from all over the country and many times even foreign, whoever interested in her knowing about her would arrive and she'd test them all then chose her right partner/partners. Our supreme book is Ved and it states that a woman or man should never marry before the age of 24 without reading atleast 1 Ved and without an income, people who doesn't meet these 3 categories aren't eligible to marry. This child marriage was an emergency step taken in struggle period so do not consider it as a norm, it was never a norm/practice ever before these few years.

what are your sources? social evils like child marriage and barring of women from reading or learning the Veds started way before the Mughals. How could it be decided that a woman unlearned in the Veds should not marry yet, when they were not allowed to study them in the first place?
