Love this series. Thanks for the videos. Y&Y/ Tigris in Euphrates is my #2 game. I recently purchased the Rio Grande Samurai based on one of your videos and fell in love after 5 plays. May sometime also make top 10 after some more plays. I might try to get my hands on this one also based on your recommendation.
Well done. Love the idea of a hidden gem series. Slowly buying up all Knizia’s I’m even vaguely interested in. Got my hands on the Parker Brothers version of Rheinlander within the last year and am now looking forward to getting it to the table ASAP.
I have that too! I acquired it after I did the video. I think it's better than the Face 2 Face edition, except that wooden discs would probably be better than cardboard shields.
@@BoardGems Could you elaborate a bit on in what ways do you like german version better? I noticed the map has minor differences. Are you referring to those? I'm about to order one or the other. I like F2F version's board colours better, but don't know if differences in the board make a real difference in gameplay.
Oh, that's totally down to personal preference. I actually haven't done a close side-by-side comparison, but I may do so as a special video sometime comparing the two, now that I have both editions. I agree the board differences don't make much of a gameplay difference.
You Little Genius. Never saw it at another Channel but reviewing on The „Reviews“ on BGG is awesome. Hope you will be a Trendsetter with it. Thanks for sharing this Gem. Poorly The Not german Version Looks way better in The shelf than The german one, hopefully i can find it anywhere :) Instant Abo for this Review, thanks!
I just found you and I love what you are doing. I thought about doing the same as I love older games. Knizia is my favorite designer (I have a full shelf just of his games) and I learned this one and thought it was going to go GREAT...but it fell very flat. I keep wanting to get rid of it...but I still can't! My gaming spidey sense tells me that this one is a keeper! I have this same edition.
Thanks for the kind words! Rheinländer definitely isn't universally liked, hence its low-ish ratings on BGG. There's a lot to like here, in my opinion, but I won't be keeping it in my personal collection... I borrowed it from the restaurant to do the video, and have since returned it. It just won't get any play in my family of 3. If you're thinking of doing videos about older games, maybe in a format similar to Board Gems, please stay in touch! I'm open to maybe posting/hosting videos from other like-minded gamers on this channel - I don't even mind to do the editing of the raw video. Or if you do your own thing, of course I'd be happy to link to it. Let's spread the love of older gems, and challenge the Cult of the New!
It probably would get a different theme because they'll want to capture players with other tastes. Those who like this theme probably already have a copy. Great to hear the "German-style game" terminology again!
You’re probably right. I’m just not a fan of fantasy themes and find them overdone lately. And yup, I still call them German-style games! People started calling them Euros, then the term started to be used specifically for complicated German-style games, which Rheinländer definitely isn’t.
Agreed, but I guess fantasy sells. Enjoyed the response to the 4 ratings section. Hope you do more of that. I looked over the 4 ratings on this one and two of them were from the Netherlands. Suspect they played together and got a rule wrong that made all the difference.
Yes, that will happen! Honestly I've been crazy busy lately and I've been really having a hard time finding the time to do proper gem videos. There's at least one more comparison coming before I can get back on track...
This video is dedicated to the memory of Lt. Klenze (1888-1917).
"He died the way he lived... as a soft-headed Rhinelander."
A prescient caution about anthropomorphic animals and space settings - looking at you, MLEM! 🙀
"Oh, once you start playing, the cats don't matter at all!"
"Then why add them?"
@@BoardGems In a recent interview with the Good Doctor, he said that he "initially" recoiled at notion of Cats in Space as a setting for his game. 😆

This was one of the best reviews I've watched in a long time. I really enjoyed it.
Thanks!
Thanks for this video. Played this for the first time just now and its really fun. Keep up the good work!

@@BoardGems Thank you for help. I think I will go for German edition since it likely has the board how Mr Knizia originally indended it to be.

What a beautiful cover, especially for a game that comes from an era known for awful covers.
I have a different uglier cover . Wonder if its the original one
