    I was land surveying at page field Airport in fort myers and the guard following me around randomly asked, "Do you want any sugarcane?".. I said "hell ya!"... Turns out the firefighters on site were growing their own Pineapples, Avacados, Sugar Cane, Herbs, etc... Pretty random and cool, and now I have sugar cane!

    I'll never forget my first day working on a CSA farm here in Jacksonville. Francisco was from Puerto Rico and had a friend near you who had some legendary strain from Rico that they used to make rum with. We got the contract to grow cane from the newly renovated Old Ice Packing plant building for the first distillery in St A since prohibition - St Augustine Distillery. "Be at work early I'll be there with the cane he says," and boss shows up with a 22'(I believe? Maybe 32'?) U-Haul to the farm. You couldn't shove a pencil through those layers of cane parallel to the ground top to bottom. He taught me everything I know about it but man. . cut every cane into 3 nodes. Let them callus for three days.. and planted 8 half mile rows. Yeah that was a long week.

      You'll still get cavities and diabetes if you eat too much sugar, "natural" or not. Why did God arrange for that? Fructose is fructose, whether it comes in honey, maple syrup, cane sugar, sugar beets, dates etc. Honey does have the advantage of having antibacterial qualities and lasting thousands of years, so that's something. It seems to work as well on wounds as Bacitracin.

    I've been trying to tell people this recently! I had sugar cane getting too big and unruly so I cleared some back and had the idea to rough chop them into 6-8 inch sections and throw them into my compost bin, best compost I've ever made was the result. I had 4 bins running next to each other only separated by a couple of weeks each, I only added sugar cane to 1 of the bins and that bin produced hands down the best black gold compost I've ever seen. A few chunks left over on the top had tons of little red wigglers housed in it boring it out, they seem to love the stuff late into the compost process. The bio char I had in this pile even looks different than the bio char I had in the other 3 piles. I highly suggest experimenting with this idea.

    • @ziggybender9125
      @ziggybender9125 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the other ingredients I had was gigantic jack fruits that had fallen from the tree. I'd just shovel them in whole and jab them up with a shovel. It's the worms in the cane stalks sitting atop the best black gold I've ever seen, making fresh worm castings on top of it that has me excited.

  • @Wardred101videos

    This video gives me flashbacks of when I planted sugarcane as a teenager. I'm from South Louisiana and sugar cane is mostly the main crop. I have probably planted thousands of acres of sugarcane by hand, walking 3 people behind a cane trailer and placing them in rows. The harvester would cut the tops off as it harvested. We would work from as the farmer would say, "from can to can't" I made $1 an hour. Sugar cane is a 3-year crop, so you harvest one field and plant it in another field. Then it's harvested and sold to the sugar mill. We would plant the cane overlapped half with the previous stalk. It takes 3 years for the sugar content to reach its maximum sugar content, after that it can change from year to year. But just for a family, it does not make much of a difference. In colder climates, I think sugar beets can be planted. But I don't know anything about sugar beats or colder climates.

      @mmmmarada 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kristynirizarry7413 I am not sure about the proper diameter of the pot, and since I am just rooting the canes in potting soil to see if they take, I didn't research it well. However, I read that it likes to be in about 3 feet of well drained soil that is nutrient-rich and kept moist. So I have it in a very tall pot with good organic potting soil just to get it rooted over the winter and early spring while it's frosting in my growing zone. If you check back with me I'll let you know how the canes do over the winter.

    When we were kids we used to toss cow pies at each other, skip em on the pond, etc., but they were never that fresh. We always waited until they were hard and dry. I've never seen anyone handle fresh crap like that.

After they went bankrupt, their smelly mountain remained, and "Bandini Mountain" has since become synonymous with unpleasant things that don't go away.

    Hi David! New sub! Great video. I love sugar cane, however it is really hard to grow here where I live in West Virginia, unless you have a fairly large green house. Like today, June 16, it was 55 this morning. I’m originally from Birmingham and growing up, my brother and I would spend most of the summer in south Mississippi where all our extended family lived. My Grandfather was a farmer and would grow sugar cane every year, and make molasses. Let’s see, I’m 49 now, and my extended family is still growing the cane and making syrup. So they’ve been doing it well over 100 years now, and using the same syrup mill to this day. My brother and I have some wonderful memories growing up and being around that mill. Funny thing, as a kid I would see them putting the finished syrup in what I thought were paint cans. They were gold on the outside and I always thought that was the funniest thing, putting syrup in paint cans. 😄

    QUESTION … when you clear an area with your chickens, are you providing/baiting the area with any chicken feed, or do they just consuming the available vegetation and bugs … also, approximately how often do you rotate the chicken tractor ? … thanks!

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We throw compost here and there inside the tractor - but they happily tear up and eat all the grass without encouragement. We move the tractor when they've totally destroyed the grass. If we wanted grass to grow better, rather than all be eaten, we would move them every couple of days.

    Hey David, can you cut the buds with just part of the ring where the roots come out off the cane , root the buds and juice the cane? I know it will work if you cut on each side of the root ring and leave about an inch of cane on each side of the root ring but Then you have a bunch of short pieces of cane to juice and it might be sort of hard to juice that way, I have a few short pieces to try and see.Thanks man

    David, if you see this, what is your take on growing Long Grain Rice in Zone 8a (central South Carolina Sandy soil)?? I have grown Sorghum here, it LOVED IT! I didn’t make syrup out of it, I don’t have a press but I did harvest a lot of seed, I planted 15 seeds this spring and I got thousands of seeds back. Chickens loved them lol i belive I saved some for this coming spring. But if you could let me know about the Rice that would be great.
