80's T-75's are my favorite speaker. There's nothing that does that top/high mid bite quite the same. It brings out the Marshall characteristic distortion great! I've owned a 1987 JCM800 cab for over 10 years now and it's great. Wouldn't give it up even for the vintage greenbacks that I have recently collected.
Great video! I owned all T75 versions there are. Currently I have two 15 ohm rubber vented T75s dated January 27th 1984 in my Marshall cab. They sound fantastic and are so so different from the later versions.
The JCM 800 cab is THE winner! I had 2 Marshall JCM 900 cabs in my day. They didn't cut it for me. I remember trading one of them for an '80 Hiwatt SE-4123 cab. 24 years later, I still have that cab.
Jcm900 seems bassier and has almost a scooped sound which is crazy cool! Both are very full and loud but the 900 takes the win. The 800 sounds like it will cut in any mix too!
I like them both for different reasons, I can see the 900 being an advantage for some higher gain sounds, the 800 definitely has that led school creamy goodness. Honestly, I think there is a bigger difference between the 800 and 900 cabs than there is between the two families of heads. I’d like to hear both cabs together through either/both style heads.
Great comparison! I’m a big fan of the G12-75s. Have used them in many cabs all my time as a player since the 90s and onwards. Their full frequency range make them great for ambient sounds. Sounds best in vented cabs IMO.
I'm a JCM 900 Guy for about 80% of the work I need to do. But I am digging the 800 on the side by side comparison. Thanks guys reat Video as always and Happy New Year!
Both great cabinets..12-75 T's are the most installed speaker in the A & B cabs for sure...Love the V-30 too.. So anyway when I've got them opened up completely It's a good time to check every fastener in the cab..You'd be surprised how many screws get a bit loose on speakers & General construction of the cab.. That has a great impact on the overall sound..
Its very subjective, but its the JCM 800 by a country mile for me, it sounds more soulful, the 800 would make a better blues rock cab where as the 900 would make a better metal cab imo.
I would like the same comparison but with the speakers switched between the cabs. I think the major differences in sound are mostly the speakers. Would be interesting to hear
I think you're 100% right. If I remember right the only difference in the cabinet construction is that the 900 cabs have mdf slats for mounting the baffle as opposed to strips of plywood in the 800. I have a 900 cab and its great.
Really great Video, as always! Great work. 🙂 Many thanks Johan for your great work relating all those great stuff around THE 70s Rock Guitar sound!! One thing in this video makes me wonder though: One can clearly see 'T3781' 8Ohm stamped on at least one speaker in the vintage cab! 😲 Are these all 8 Ohm? The difference in sound from 16 Ohm to 8 Ohm is quite recognizable for the same speaker. At least in my experience. Rock on....🎸 Matt
Can you say with any level of certainty that the woods are identical between those two cabs? I think the construction is the same from what I understand. Just curious if you had the speakers swapped between the cabs would the difference be the same? Another thing I've often wondered about with these comparisons is that we (as guitarists) will dial in the amp for the guitar and speaker we are trying first. Then when we switch to the other speaker or guitar, it won't sound as ideal because it wasn't dialed in for that combo. I know this will take way more time, but in some ways I think it would be very cool to dial in the amp for one guitar and one set of speakers, then try the other speakers to hear the difference. THEN, dial in the guitar and amp for the second set of speakers and then compare it back to the first set of speakers with the "ideal" settings for the second set. I know that in my experience, I may not give an amp and cab combination a fair shot if I dialed it for a strat and then use a Les Paul. Just my $.02
Don't know how this happens but how can two cabs, ostensibly the SAME cab, sound so different? Madness. Tempted to get one for a DSL1 Head I'm enjoying at the minute, although I'm not sure 1W of headroom will get much joy out of four speakers! Happy to be proved wrong as it'd look so cool,
Hello Johan, Generally speaking i usually prefer speakers cabs with a " rusty patina" and with no exception in this case i prefer the warmer " rasp" ( if I can define it that way) of the 1986 Cab; unless it' s been kept unused from the beginning, i would prefer a older speaker cab, because it' s more worn in, cheers! P.S.: the g12- T75 has always been a piercing highs speaker type, it takes a lot of advantage to be worn in!
Hi Johan, I prefer the 800 for its dynamic, more open 3D sound I'd say, at least with the LP. The 900 sounds much flatter/duller to me, but not so obvious with Simon's strat... Happy New gear Year! 😉
2:27 as soon as i heard that strat i could hear siamese dream. those speakers for sure on that album, the newer ones werent far off, but the 80s ones were eerie how same it was
I'm not being facetious at all but I wonder what a comparison video between two identical cabs with identical speakers would sound like? but maybe different production years? I'd be curious if there is any audible difference considering there literally shouldn't be! Just a thought but maybe you've already done something like this for kicks? Great videos as always Johan!
Hallo Johan, on stage I could always feel which kind of cabinet, 900 or 800, I was playing with. It's just more headroom. Even the very early G 12 T 75 with this small metalgrill on the back, made from '84 until '85 I guess, have more headroom than these without a grill. I also believe that the older plywood influence the tone as well!
Yes, I have to agree with "Mad Mod" tonal comment. Neither is better though, both are just a little different from the other. Just depends on your flavor. Thanks Johan!
I like them both, they have their own pros and cons. What about mixing 2 and 2 older/newer speakers in both cabs? 🙂That would show more clearly if there are actual build differences affecting the sound. And it would open a new sonic avenue based on the G12T-75 that I guess nobody else explored yet 🙂
If I had to choose between a Marshall cab and a Marshall cab...I'd have to pick the Marshall. ;) All I have are JCM900 1960s with the UK G12T-75s loaded...never had any problems & the cab weighs 1/2 as much as a Mesa 4x12...birch wood tone blah blah blah...gimme a Marshall & you can keep your hernia.
are both made from birch plywood? I also have a question about impedance in case anyone riding here knows. Can you use the speaker in "stereo" but only use one input for 8ohms? I realize this would only activate 2 speakers, but I'm curious as to whether this would cause any damage. Thanks
I’m curious what the tone difference has to also do with the year they were made. Like if you compared the same years - which would win. Bc now there’s the added variable of year /build quality of the 80s v 2000s
Hi man, great stuff, I recently bought an early 2000s 1960 (2004), been checking about the wiring if its correctly wired for being a used one, can you send me a picture of yours to check? Thanks in advance ;)
Hi, Johan! 2000 is good for Gibson, whyle 800 is better with Fender. 1960 is much more rough, then 2000. Its my experience. See you in Friday, to say you have a great year!😊 Zigfrid
One of them is missing some frequencies. I am not going to say which one I prefer, but I will ask why the heck do they sound so different? I also wonder if this would be the case every time when comparing other 800 vs 900 cabs of the same years. If all cabs generally have this difference, then I just figure they changed the design and build somehow, i.e., it's more than just changing the label on the back of the magnet.
Is the cab wood the same type of wood on both cabs ? And is the thickness identical ?. Sure can hear the difference, the 800 sounded nicer to me for blues and rock, and the 900 sounded a bit tighter and probably better suited for hard rock or metal.
The 900 sounded more nasal, with more top end. Played on its own I like the 800 better. In a band, depending on music, the 900 could have an advantage. Does age play a role? Do speakers lose high end as they get older?
Thanks Bengt! Yeah speakers loose high end and dynamics over the the number of hour’s they’ve been played, but for speakers this old it’s hard to determine which has been played the most. Cheers!
Neither sound very good to me. I'm not a fan of the 2205/10 (which was my first Marshall), nor am I fan of T75s (though they are way better than M70s) I think that Les Paul Custom has got some great chewy tones though. I'd love to hear that Les Paul through your Superbass or 1987X with the 1982 cab!
Actually wish we could have heard one of your old 100 watt Marshall heads with these speakers, it is my experience that the sound of the 90's and beyond G12 75 T speakers vary greatly in tone, they are very inconsistent, some sound awesome with the old 100 watt heads, others sound terrible
I love them both but I’m surprised that they sound so different. To me, the 800 has more of a blooming attack. Maybe it enhances the sag more? The 900 has a punchier attack. A more modern sound I’d say.
Would it be as simple as applying a Boss GE-7 to the JCM 900 to make the difference between the two amps negligible? Could be a minuscule difference that saves the buyer up to $1200 on the two heads.
Seems like I hate everything that says JCM900 on it. A JCM900 was my first proper tube amp and I always thought it sounded dreadful. Got rid of it far too late. ...The 800 sounds quite ok I think.
I’m going to buy you a DOD270 pedal. I liked the animated guy tone the best. The first one and I don’t even know which one that was. Sounds to me like the low end lost clarity in the 900. Which kind of makes it sound like the top end gained clarity but it didn’t really. Nice one as always. Never knew about the vent. Was that on the front or the back?

Agree!
Agreed. The 900 sounded somewhat scooped in a way I wouldn't prefer I think.
I totally agree, there is less dynamics and more compression in the 900. I also think that this might be cool for a metal player, not for me though.
I would like the same comparison but with the speakers switched between the cabs. I think the major differences in sound are mostly the speakers. Would be interesting to hear

JCM 800 for me, more 'classic' sounding. I personally use an early '80's 4x12 65's cab, sound awesome.

Yes, I have to agree with "Mad Mod" tonal comment.

Yeah the 800 cab has a G12-65 or even Greenback vibe to it

800 is a little less harsh to me. I prefer it.
Whos the Gentleman with the blue hat? That dude has some serious rhythm
What about the woods that the cabinets are made? (Plywood or chips?)
There are lot of differences… I prefer 800…
Thanks for share
The old one sounds crispier and airy. Both sound good tho
Note definition is much stronger in the 800. The compression in the 900 seems to swallow up all of the chord tones but one or 2.
The 800 sounded better with this amp and guitars, fuller mids.
900 was grainier. But I think both sounded pretty good.
JCM 800 hands down for the Strat!
Would it be as simple as applying a Boss GE-7 to the JCM 900 to make the difference between the two amps negligible? Could be a minuscule difference that saves the buyer up to $1200 on the two heads.
I think the 800 has more information in terms of overtones and a tighter low end
I Like of Jcm 800
I'll take the 800 because older is always better.
YES

Nice one as always. Never knew about the vent. Was that on the front or the back?
Thanks! It had a vent on the front plate like G12-65
JCM800 all day long, every time
Does anybody make a G12T75 copy that sounds like the early ones. It's much more musical.
900 sounds better with the les paul, 800 sounds better with the strat. Both great, but the 900 sounds a little better for my tastes.
900 all the way
With strat 800, with les paul 900
Much prefer the 800 cab.
T00 L8 4 me! I'm sure it will RAWK! \m/
Jcm800 cab all the way
G12-65 = 1981-1983
G12M-70 = 1983-1986
G12T-75 1986-1990
G12T-75 (second generation still British made) = 1990-2004-ish
G12T-75 (current Chinese made) = 2004-ish- present.
I have a JCM 800 cab from 1984 with 15 ohm vented G12T-75s. I’ve seen similar dating of these speakers but mine are from April ‘84 so who knows. :)
I think speaker age plays the biggest part here.
I think they’re both old enough to make it hard to determine which of them has the most hours of use on it.
