many times your body may THINK it's ready to make babies but it's really not. just because a 10yo is ovulating doesn't mean her body can actually handle pregnancy and childbirth. really the whole system was designed to start making babies as soon as possible in case you got eaten by a jaguar and it didn't really put a lot of thought into whether you actually survived to raise those babies or make more of them.

Went to a dermatologist who told me there's "no reason" for me to have acne in my 30's and gave me a prescription. I know he meant "There's a way we can solve this problem, you don't have to live with it" but it didn't feel all that great anyway!
I heard that lie, too. Recently I found out that some people just have pores that are shaped in such a way as to make them more prone to acne. Lucky us
While it is good to show blood as red, I think it's important to make sure that kids/girls know that it can be dark red to dark brown. I didn't know it had started because I thought poop was traveling to the front of my panties. After 3 days of this happening, I told my mom. I knew poop wasn't supposed to be in that area, but it didn't look red at all.

My mom was the one that told my sister she wasn't wiping properly when my sister notified her there were brown stains on her underwear. My mom never thought an 8 year old could get their period because she learned that girls get it after 12, and her and all her sisters did get it around 12-13(she has 6 sisters). I got it at 10 a couple months later and had just started learning about puberty at school and knew what it was. This was when my sister realized that was what was happening to her, after I told my family I got my first period and she learned what it was.
Not to freak you out, but in the comments on other videos like these in a discussion about to do educate children on the right terminology came the response from someone who had been abused as a child & apparently abusers may use names like these to make it easier to abuse;"cookies are for eating." Don't take my word for anything, i'm just repeating what i read on the internet, so i'm a supremely unqualified source. If your foster organisation has a library, ask to use it & read up on it. My school didn’t have sex ed (lived in the Bible Belt sigh). My mom bought me this book called “It’s Perfectly Normal” which was the **best** book to explain about growing up and sex. One of the really cool things I remember is they had illustrations of different people and different ways people grow during adolescence. They weren’t just all white, and some were in wheelchairs or had other disabilities. There were other things too that made it incredibly inclusive for the 90s. It also made me very popular because my friends all wanted to come over and read the book. So basically I taught sex ed. 🙄😆

At least your mom was on top of it, Ive heard so many stories of girls who thought they were dying when they got their first period. Im from Finland, we got taught everything at school, from 5th grade onwards. And pretty awesome, that you ended up sharing your critical information, so your friends knew what to expect. When I think of period from a kids mindset, blood and pain means serious trouble. I wouldnt wish that sorta panic to anyone! Knowledge is power.
A lot of the time, we're given the "changes" talk in such a melancholy tone, like, we're only told how scary it is and it's always delivered dryly And yes, puberty can be scary and you may feel bad at times about it, but it's not all doom and gloom So, I love that the introduction is so up-beat. It sets a better tone and perspective to these changes and that, although it's a long process, it'll be okay

@@daisyjohnson7588 They clearly think that shame is inherent, when really, it's taught I'm AFAB and when I had my first period I was actually fairly excited about it and told my family eagerly so I could get the support I need. We even celebrated it as a sign of maturing + to try to reduce negative connotation. My family's very far from healthy but they handled that great I hate my periods now because A: They're horribly intense and B: Turns out I'm a trans man, but I'm not ashamed of them any more than I'm ashamed of peeing. It's just a bodily process. Not exactly one to scream about from the rooftops, sure, but not one that can't be mentioned.
I felt the opposite was true. We were taught that it was no big deal and people romanticized periods as "becoming a woman" and like if it was a wonderful thing. I was 10 and my sister was 8 when we got ours, hardly "a woman". Her flow gave her anemia and mine were unbearably painful, I suffered tremendously and missed out on a lot because of it. I always felt it robbed us of some of our childhood, and thought they should be more realistic of how awful it is to bleed and suffer every month and teach about pain management and possible serious issues that come with it, such as endo, anemia. I suffered on my own with little knowledge for years! We were little kids! How are we supposed to know better when nobody wants to upset us by telling the truth and nobody wants to accept that children that they care for are actually suffering, when it's supposed to be something "normal and beautiful" so we must be exaggerated or making it up. Felt like total gaslighting.
@@jelatinosa I'm sorry you had that experience. My first period happened when i was around 11 i think, but I dont remember having particularly painful periods until high school. Even then, mine never got to the point of cant-get-out-of-bed. I think people should be taught from a young age that while yes some cramping and pain during menstruation is normal, it is NOT normal to be in agony!
One of the things I noticed about Dr. Dee's videos is the language they use surrounding having kids. It's almost always "if" or "may" rather than the typical assumption that everyone will have kids. Pretty progressive for the time!
My brother went through a super clumsy phase. When he was about 16, he grew nearly a foot in under a year. We couldn't let him hold anything that was even remotely breakable, unless we were getting rid of it.
My sex ed class was done in health class like everybody else. But the home ec teacher felt the need to bring in pro-life propaganda. She was an evangelical Christian, so no surprise there. But when she started talking about how they washed the baby with a strong salinated fluid designed to burn the baby and then chop it into little pieces before removing it, I couldn't keep my tongue behind my teeth. My mother immediately called the local planned Parenthood office and explained what was going on in the classroom, they were more than happy to come and talk with the students and give them the correct information. The school principal wouldn't let them in, even after hearing what this woman was teaching! ETA correcting talk to text mistakes

Ok, I'm still highly annoyed that no one ever told me girls voices can crack too even though it's a much lesser change. I had many embarrassing choir moments that nobody told me were normal. And I thought there was something wrong with me because I had trouble switching between chest and head voice.
I wish they'd shown these videos at my school. We had a mandatory maturation night in 5th and 6th grade(mid 90's), but they only spoke to us about our gender's changes because they didn't want us getting ideas. Lmao They sent us home with a booklet that had drawings to help us determine what stage of puberty we were in and included the information for the other gender. Literally the next day boys started trying to flick bra straps to see if they could magically undo bras like they'd heard about. I want to know wtf they taught the boys!

As a European these videos shock me because we were educated so differenly on this topic. Back in school the teachers explained it with much greater detail, we did many worksheets, read texts together, got our questions directly answered and we barely watched any videos.
We do the same in America (or at least I did at my school). Videos like these are usually used to introduce kids into the topic- but they aren't the main source of information.

The egg thing hit different as I was recently subbing elementary during sex ed season and a student asked if the women's egg was similar to the chicken's egg and the teacher said, "yes." I about died. And clarified after she finished her answer.
I’d like to add to the breast part: you’re not always done growing them until you’re an adult. I’m in my mid twenties, and my breasts grew again around 23-24 and I went up a cup size, and I didn’t gain any significant weight beforehand anywhere else. I wasn’t told in school that it would happen. I seem to have had just some general hormonal changes that I wasn’t expecting at all (shifts in weight distribution and cycle changes) and it would have been nice if my health class in school hadn’t just been about changes that happen while you’re in school, but after as well
Yeah mine are a lot larger in my 40s than they were in my 30s despite being the same weight the whole time.The difference from my teens to late twenties made sense when my very quick metabolism finally slowed down and I put on about thirty pounds, but the reshaping since has been kind of impressive too despite maybe a ten pound weight fluctuation since. And I had a boyfriend in university who grew two inches in his twenties. Just when he thought he knew what size pants to wear!!! My shape is completely different at 48 from what it was in my thirties even when I was ten pounds heavier then than I am now. Bodies be weird, yo.
Many people don't really stop growing till their mid 20s(not me, I stopped growing at 12yrs old at 5') and breasts can continue to change shape and size their whole life. They mostly talk about it in puberty till adulthood because it's the biggest change(from no boobs, to fully functional boobs).
I would've loved a warning about this as well. Mostly because having to buy all new bras is really expensive, and I'm going to have to do it a second time now.

Honestly this is better than the information I got in the late 90's. We did boys and girls puberty separately in the 4th grade and then in the 5th grade we were supposed to get the video on the opposite sex, but I changed school districts so I never watched that one. I was too embarrassed to ask any questions so it took me a while to fill in the blanks. I don't remember what the 4th grade video was but it was the first time I learned about periods and I was absolutely horrified, I remember someone at recess that day telling me I looked very pale. Maybe an upbeat video would have helped
Same! We had a brief talk one day in my 6th grade health class. That was the extent of any discussion about human anatomy. I guess some parents got mad and it was never discussed again. Needless to say, we had a lot of teenage pregnancy because they didn't understand about safe sex. I'm going to do better for my daughter so she understands how all this works. I'm not hopeful her school will say much about it.
That "TINGLY" FEELING, that looks like they're getting ELECTROCUTED 😂‼️ I remember having a class in 4th grade after school that didn't do much in the way of teaching much but tell us that we (girls) would begin to bleed 🩸 at around a certain age and need to use materials that I didn't understand, my Mom NEVER explained anything to me about it... Even though she signed me up for the class .. and then I got my fist Ma'i (period) when I was 10... And ended up going to my Dad for everything! I didn't even tell my Mom for 2 years that I had it... Until I was at the store with her and needed to buy some sanitary products and boy was SHE SHOCKED 😲‼️ She had had a hysterectomy when my younger brother was 2 so she NEVER even thought about anything that had to do with it or me‼️Even though I ALSO had a Hysterectomy EARLY, I made sure that my daughter was prepared for her period👍❣️
So they explained how bad acne could be a reason to see a doctor, how a period can make someone a bit grumpy, but did not mention period cramps AT ALL, or that they can be so debilitating that a person should definitely get medical care to manage the pain. I know they are trying not to scare kids, but my cramps were dismissed by adults for my whole adolescence as "something everyone gets used to" and I suffered in agony every month, barely able to sit up in class. If they're going to say that acne can be a reason to see a doc, they should have acknowledged that cramps can be a reason to see a doc. I finally have a diagnosis of endometriosis, three decades later, and treatment to help me handle the pain. I really wish adults and the sx ed health films I was shown had been up front and clear that pain can happen, and if it does, see a doctor.
I guess the medical awareness in the 90s about pcos and such wasnt very big, it's started to be acknowledge only pretty recently. And worst of all, you can still find obgyns who dismiss your problems because "every other woman feels the same", even female docs. On the other hand, what got me about the vid is the statement that your first periods may be generalky very irregular until it settles to a pattern about a year later. BS! I had mine nuckear-clock regularly every 30 days from the first one, lasting a whole week with cramps to the point of womiting and pelvis pains. It was later reduced to 5 days and back pain, no vomiting, by the time i was 18, and they've only now in my 30s finding out i may have some hormonal condition causing this.
I was just watching the latest season of Grey's Anatomy (s19), there were several episodes about what life is like for doctors and patients now that abortion is banned in so many states, I was genuinely shocked (I know it's a drama show but many of the scenes were clearly inspired by stories we hear about in the news). Could be interesting to see you do a reaction to it, I recommend one of the episodes where Addison Montgomery (famous obgyn in the series) is visiting, the wildest ones are episodes 11-12... But she's also in ep. 3, 5 and 16 if you want the full context...
I actually did wonder about being clumsy as I got taller as a kid. I was the first girl to have growth spurts at my school & I have hyper mobility too. I would often have “clumsy days” after a growth spirt as I had to relearn how to control my knees from bending backward. Every time I had a clumsy day I’d wonder how many more I’d have to go through.
17:38 voices change for AFAB people too. I was mad that nobody told me. I went from a soprano to an alto from middle school to high school. Even the sound of my laugh changed, and it was hard to get used to.
Interesting about the clumsy part. It wasn’t a question I had but it happened to me. I went from probably around 5’3” or 5’4” to 5’10” in about 2.5 years. I had growing pains and had to relearn how to run properly, I kept tripping over my own legs. I used to be a ballet dancer and my whole balance was thrown off and it really affected my ability to dance until I eventually quit.
I grew 3 inches in three months. Have literal scars all over from my skin tearing. Worst summer of my life. I'm already from a tall family, only made me even taller than my 4th grade short friends, and I had my first period mid summer.

I measured him and he was exactly 3 inches taller. My second one has a back filled with stretch marks. Myself it was the breasts. They grew so fast I changed cup size every 2 weeks until I reached a 34H by the time I was 14. Gym class was a nightmare with the equivalent of a bag of potatoes on my chest.
my favorite part is definitely about them explaining the physiological and normalizing it. this was in the 90s but even I didnt have a sex ed class that was this specific. really all I remember was them showing us a vaginal condom lol. this was back in 2011 when I was jr and it was the first sex Ed class I had. The sounds, smells, all of the sensations were just overstimulating in a way I didn't have any desire to recreate. Finally enough, I'm a big fan of physical affection in other ways. Hugs are my jam, and good old fashioned cuddling is wonderful to me. I just don't have any desire to thrash my bits in a mix with anyone else's. Also I was in my early thirties before I understood how to express it. Realizing there was a word for how I felt meant there were others like me. I don't want anyone to feel alone and broken for and time, especially not as long as I did.

We had decent sex-ed starting when I was 10 or so. We even had people come in to talk about HIV specifically and learned about different forms of contraception. Looking back though, it saddened me that it was so heteronormative even in the mid-2000s-2010s. It would've saved me a lot of grief and confusion knowing that finding other boys attractive was perfectly normal.

The sex ed videos I remember watching were all from a set of three VHS, that also came with short books, called (title translated in a literal way) "The tree of life". For some reason I was obsessed with them. All I remember is that it was an animation and there were these two kids (a boy and a girl) learning sex ed from their granny who would read about the things to them in form of fairytales. It was also quite a niche thing, apparently. According to the Wikipedia, that short series was distributed in Italy, France + Canada and Spain + Latin America.
Yeah I’m in Italy and my mom bought me those VHS and I refused to watch them because I was too embarrassed 😂 I learned everything from other classmates and from teens magazines and some details from a nice middle school teacher who answered all of our questions!
Not gonna lie, the educational commentary actually give me something quick to reference for my two boys because I have no idea what to expect for them. I’ll still read up - I’ve got time… they’re 3 and 1 😂 - but I loved having a top level overview on what to expect when.

My 90s sex Ed was DARE. In the 5th grade they put us all in an auditorium then showed us disgusting pics of STDs including a man whose balls were so big he had to carry them around in a wheelbarrel. The pics were so grotesque, absolutely horrifying.
I laughed when they talked about how breasts will develop slowly. From what I recall mine came in pretty damn fast, woke up one day and BAM. The boob fairy was too generous with me. lol

Man, I learned so little growing up in Dallas! The period video was so bad, everyone asked if you pee out the blood. All the teacher (not our normal teacher) said was "no, if you pee blood, that's bad" and that MADE US EVEN MORE CONFUSED. We never learned about the vagina! Or anything else about puberty honestly!

I grew up in Europe. We did writing assignments on our differences, for health class learn about your gender first, afterwards about boys. There was a brief pamphlet on disabilities. In debth look at 5 brain disorders. Bulimia Nirvosa, Anorexia Nirvosa, Autism, Down Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Another covered gay lebian and hemofrodite, people. We were assigned to watch movie The Closet for homework and our teacher introduced us to someone who was born with a disability. I remember interacting with the person in class for a little bit.
I found this video to be pretty good for explaining sex Ed. It made me cringe in a few places and laugh at others, but other all very good. I remember when I was in primary school, I was very interested in learning everything about the human body. I remember watching an educational kids TV show back in the mid to late 90's, It covered so much and even talked about sexuality. They even sang a song about all the different sexual orientations and how it was okay be be; straight, bi and gay etc...
Towards the end I would point out the part where he says it happens to "all" boys and girls, which is incorrect. If you aren't hitting all the landmarks of puberty, and aren't on hormone blockers. by the time you are in your late teens you need to see a doctor because you might have an endocrine disorder.

It's not fear mongering when the hospital that your twin sisters were at for the first 2 months of their lives after being born 8 weeks early in 1982 calls their parents and says, "We got some tainted blood in 1982 and we need your 3 yr old daughters to have an HIV test". HIV was very real and very scary in the early to mid 80's.
A little off-topic, but I really appreciate learning the medical terms, because even at 55 I don't always know them. I don't recall learning about the difference between the vulva and the vagina. I had to go to the doctor once for a boil on my genetals and when they asked where it was, I had this flash of, "I don't think I should use the slang terms," (no idea why, they're medical people, they've probably heard ones I don't even know) and said it was on my vagina, not knowing any other term. They looked and said, "I see, it's on your left labia," and I was thrilled to learn what to call it, at 53.
I remember coming back to school in the Fall and some kids looking so different. Especially the guys. They were practically shaving and they had gotten so much taller. Later, when I had my own kids, my oldest grew so tall so fast he had stretch marks on his back!
I would like to see these actors now in their 40s-50s react to this again. Also, it’s worth mentioning that my younger brother watched this video In school. In 2019. We have progressed very little. Not a bad video for the time, definitely.
The only problems I have with the breast part is 1) they say that all breasts produce milk, when some people are unable to. And 2) they don’t mention that sometimes breasts can grow extremely fast or become too large to handle, which I have an issue with as someone who had boobs early and had them for a while, but when I was around 13, they grew rapidly from probably like a C to now (a couple years later) being about J-K cups (UK sizing)
I started developing breasts and got acne at age 8. By age 12 I wore an A cup bra. The acne still comes and the boobs kept growing. I don't like them not normalizing irregular menstrual cycles.
I’m so glad you’re looking at these videos. I hope there are more, because your reactions are worth the price of admission. I will say though, that as someone who was in my mid twenties in the 1990’s, the omission of an LGBTQ+ perspective was probably just as much a lack of it being in the mainstream consciousness.as it was a deliberate omission to avoid any references to said communities. Most aware thinking adults at that time were well aware of the existence of at least most of these communities, and were all too aware of the stigma most of society at the time put on these groups. While I’m not trying to defend the omission, I will say that it was not nearly as forefront in the public consciousness as it is today. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Nobody is really 100% sure of what to do when they have a baby for the first time, or even with their second or third baby. Each baby is different, and there is no one right way to parent them. There’s certainly a few wrong ways, but if your baby is fed, clean, and sleeping (for the most part) at the end of the day, and you’re mostly the same way too, it’s all good.
She doesn’t worry about being clumsy when she’s taller because everyone in her family didn’t get a foot and a half taller and become a hazard to others with their gangly limbs 😂
As someone who stopped growing at age 11 at 4 ft 10in, but with two younger brothers who grew very rapidly to be well over six ft, let me tell you my level of confusion about why they had no awareness of the location of their own bodies cannot be overstated. many times your body may THINK it's ready to make babies but it's really not. just because a 10yo is ovulating doesn't mean her body can actually handle pregnancy and childbirth. really the whole system was designed to start making babies as soon as possible in case you got eaten by a jaguar and it didn't really put a lot of thought into whether you actually survived to raise those babies or make more of them.

Went to a dermatologist who told me there's "no reason" for me to have acne in my 30's and gave me a prescription. I know he meant "There's a way we can solve this problem, you don't have to live with it" but it didn't feel all that great anyway!
I heard that lie, too. Recently I found out that some people just have pores that are shaped in such a way as to make them more prone to acne. Lucky us
While it is good to show blood as red, I think it's important to make sure that kids/girls know that it can be dark red to dark brown. I didn't know it had started because I thought poop was traveling to the front of my panties. After 3 days of this happening, I told my mom. I knew poop wasn't supposed to be in that area, but it didn't look red at all.
Yeah, that oxidized blood colour can be confusing, but I figured it out because it was stinky like dried blood & not stinky like poop. TMI?

My mom was the one that told my sister she wasn't wiping properly when my sister notified her there were brown stains on her underwear. My mom never thought an 8 year old could get their period because she learned that girls get it after 12, and her and all her sisters did get it around 12-13(she has 6 sisters). I got it at 10 a couple months later and had just started learning about puberty at school and knew what it was. This was when my sister realized that was what was happening to her, after I told my family I got my first period and she learned what it was.

My school didn’t have sex ed (lived in the Bible Belt sigh). My mom bought me this book called “It’s Perfectly Normal” which was the **best** book to explain about growing up and sex. One of the really cool things I remember is they had illustrations of different people and different ways people grow during adolescence. They weren’t just all white, and some were in wheelchairs or had other disabilities. There were other things too that made it incredibly inclusive for the 90s.
It also made me very popular because my friends all wanted to come over and read the book. So basically I taught sex ed. 🙄😆

Oh I'm not from an English speaking country but I heard about this book. Unless I'm mistaking it for another one, I heard about a little girl who was able to tell her mother she was being abused by her father by showing her its description in the book. I heard about it in the context that despite having the potential to save lives, it's on many banned lists.
At least your mom was on top of it, Ive heard so many stories of girls who thought they were dying when they got their first period. Im from Finland, we got taught everything at school, from 5th grade onwards. And pretty awesome, that you ended up sharing your critical information, so your friends knew what to expect. When I think of period from a kids mindset, blood and pain means serious trouble. I wouldnt wish that sorta panic to anyone! Knowledge is power.
A lot of the time, we're given the "changes" talk in such a melancholy tone, like, we're only told how scary it is and it's always delivered dryly
And yes, puberty can be scary and you may feel bad at times about it, but it's not all doom and gloom

I'm AFAB and when I had my first period I was actually fairly excited about it and told my family eagerly so I could get the support I need. We even celebrated it as a sign of maturing + to try to reduce negative connotation. My family's very far from healthy but they handled that great
I hate my periods now because A: They're horribly intense and B: Turns out I'm a trans man, but I'm not ashamed of them any more than I'm ashamed of peeing. It's just a bodily process. Not exactly one to scream about from the rooftops, sure, but not one that can't be mentioned.
I felt the opposite was true. We were taught that it was no big deal and people romanticized periods as "becoming a woman" and like if it was a wonderful thing. I was 10 and my sister was 8 when we got ours, hardly "a woman". Her flow gave her anemia and mine were unbearably painful, I suffered tremendously and missed out on a lot because of it. I always felt it robbed us of some of our childhood, and thought they should be more realistic of how awful it is to bleed and suffer every month and teach about pain management and possible serious issues that come with it, such as endo, anemia. I suffered on my own with little knowledge for years! We were little kids! How are we supposed to know better when nobody wants to upset us by telling the truth and nobody wants to accept that children that they care for are actually suffering, when it's supposed to be something "normal and beautiful" so we must be exaggerated or making it up. Felt like total gaslighting.
@@jelatinosa I'm sorry you had that experience. My first period happened when i was around 11 i think, but I dont remember having particularly painful periods until high school. Even then, mine never got to the point of cant-get-out-of-bed. I think people should be taught from a young age that while yes some cramping and pain during menstruation is normal, it is NOT normal to be in agony!
One of the things I noticed about Dr. Dee's videos is the language they use surrounding having kids. It's almost always "if" or "may" rather than the typical assumption that everyone will have kids. Pretty progressive for the time!

My brother went through a super clumsy phase. When he was about 16, he grew nearly a foot in under a year. We couldn't let him hold anything that was even remotely breakable, unless we were getting rid of it.
I grew ten inches in a year, and my voice dropped several octaves.
I think boys tend to be more clumsy than girls.
I think if I had seen this as a kid, I would have been terrified of that thing suddenly screaming from inside me while I was at school.😂

My sex ed class was done in health class like everybody else. But the home ec teacher felt the need to bring in pro-life propaganda. She was an evangelical Christian, so no surprise there. But when she started talking about how they washed the baby with a strong salinated fluid designed to burn the baby and then chop it into little pieces before removing it, I couldn't keep my tongue behind my teeth.
My mother immediately called the local planned Parenthood office and explained what was going on in the classroom, they were more than happy to come and talk with the students and give them the correct information. The school principal wouldn't let them in, even after hearing what this woman was teaching!

Ok, I'm still highly annoyed that no one ever told me girls voices can crack too even though it's a much lesser change. I had many embarrassing choir moments that nobody told me were normal. And I thought there was something wrong with me because I had trouble switching between chest and head voice.

As a European these videos shock me because we were educated so differenly on this topic. Back in school the teachers explained it with much greater detail, we did many worksheets, read texts together, got our questions directly answered and we barely watched any videos.
We do the same in America (or at least I did at my school). Videos like these are usually used to introduce kids into the topic- but they aren't the main source of information.

The egg thing hit different as I was recently subbing elementary during sex ed season and a student asked if the women's egg was similar to the chicken's egg and the teacher said, "yes." I about died. And clarified after she finished her answer.
I’d like to add to the breast part: you’re not always done growing them until you’re an adult. I’m in my mid twenties, and my breasts grew again around 23-24 and I went up a cup size, and I didn’t gain any significant weight beforehand anywhere else. I wasn’t told in school that it would happen. I seem to have had just some general hormonal changes that I wasn’t expecting at all (shifts in weight distribution and cycle changes) and it would have been nice if my health class in school hadn’t just been about changes that happen while you’re in school, but after as well
Yeah mine are a lot larger in my 40s than they were in my 30s despite being the same weight the whole time.The difference from my teens to late twenties made sense when my very quick metabolism finally slowed down and I put on about thirty pounds, but the reshaping since has been kind of impressive too despite maybe a ten pound weight fluctuation since. And I had a boyfriend in university who grew two inches in his twenties. Just when he thought he knew what size pants to wear!!! My shape is completely different at 48 from what it was in my thirties even when I was ten pounds heavier then than I am now. Bodies be weird, yo.
Many people don't really stop growing till their mid 20s(not me, I stopped growing at 12yrs old at 5') and breasts can continue to change shape and size their whole life. They mostly talk about it in puberty till adulthood because it's the biggest change(from no boobs, to fully functional boobs).

Honestly this is better than the information I got in the late 90's. We did boys and girls puberty separately in the 4th grade and then in the 5th grade we were supposed to get the video on the opposite sex, but I changed school districts so I never watched that one. I was too embarrassed to ask any questions so it took me a while to fill in the blanks. I don't remember what the 4th grade video was but it was the first time I learned about periods and I was absolutely horrified, I remember someone at recess that day telling me I looked very pale. Maybe an upbeat video would have helped
Same! We had a brief talk one day in my 6th grade health class. That was the extent of any discussion about human anatomy. I guess some parents got mad and it was never discussed again. Needless to say, we had a lot of teenage pregnancy because they didn't understand about safe sex. I'm going to do better for my daughter so she understands how all this works. I remember having a class in 4th grade after school that didn't do much in the way of teaching much but tell us that we (girls) would begin to bleed 🩸 at around a certain age and need to use materials that I didn't understand, my Mom NEVER explained anything to me about it... Even though she signed me up for the class .. and then I got my fist Ma'i (period) when I was 10... And ended up going to my Dad for everything! I didn't even tell my Mom for 2 years that I had it... Until I was at the store with her and needed to buy some sanitary products and boy was SHE SHOCKED 😲‼️ She had had a hysterectomy when my younger brother was 2 so she NEVER even thought about anything that had to do with it or me‼️Even though I ALSO had a Hysterectomy EARLY, I made sure that my daughter was prepared for her period👍❣️

So they explained how bad acne could be a reason to see a doctor, how a period can make someone a bit grumpy, but did not mention period cramps AT ALL, or that they can be so debilitating that a person should definitely get medical care to manage the pain. I know they are trying not to scare kids, but my cramps were dismissed by adults for my whole adolescence as "something everyone gets used to" and I suffered in agony every month, barely able to sit up in class. If they're going to say that acne can be a reason to see a doc, they should have acknowledged that cramps can be a reason to see a doc. I finally have a diagnosis of endometriosis, three decades later, and treatment to help me handle the pain. I really wish adults and the sx ed health films I was shown had been up front and clear that pain can happen, and if it does, see a doctor.
I guess the medical awareness in the 90s about pcos and such wasnt very big, it's started to be acknowledge only pretty recently. And worst of all, you can still find obgyns who dismiss your problems because "every other woman feels the same", even female docs. On the other hand, what got me about the vid is the statement that your first periods may be generalky very irregular until it settles to a pattern about a year later. BS! I had mine nuckear-clock regularly every 30 days from the first one, lasting a whole week with cramps to the point of womiting and pelvis pains. It was later reduced to 5 days and back pain, no vomiting, by the time i was 18, and they've only now in my 30s finding out i may have some hormonal condition causing this.
I was just watching the latest season of Grey's Anatomy (s19), there were several episodes about what life is like for doctors and patients now that abortion is banned in so many states, I was genuinely shocked (I know it's a drama show but many of the scenes were clearly inspired by stories we hear about in the news).
Could be interesting to see you do a reaction to it, I recommend one of the episodes where Addison Montgomery (famous obgyn in the series) is visiting, the wildest ones are episodes 11-12... But she's also in ep. 3, 5 and 16 if you want the full context...

I actually did wonder about being clumsy as I got taller as a kid. I was the first girl to have growth spurts at my school & I have hyper mobility too. I would often have “clumsy days” after a growth spirt as I had to relearn how to control my knees from bending backward. Every time I had a clumsy day I’d wonder how many more I’d have to go through.
I like that you mentioned normalizing acne. My high school students are less self conscious about it now. They have those cute acne patches.

Interesting about the clumsy part. It wasn’t a question I had but it happened to me. I went from probably around 5’3” or 5’4” to 5’10” in about 2.5 years. I had growing pains and had to relearn how to run properly, I kept tripping over my own legs. I used to be a ballet dancer and my whole balance was thrown off and it really affected my ability to dance until I eventually quit.
I grew 3 inches in three months. Have literal scars all over from my skin tearing. Worst summer of my life. I'm already from a tall family, only made me even taller than my 4th grade short friends, and I had my first period mid summer.

I measured him and he was exactly 3 inches taller. My second one has a back filled with stretch marks. Myself it was the breasts. They grew so fast I changed cup size every 2 weeks until I reached a 34H by the time I was 14. Gym class was a nightmare with the equivalent of a bag of potatoes on my chest.
my favorite part is definitely about them explaining the physiological and normalizing it. this was in the 90s but even I didnt have a sex ed class that was this specific. really all I remember was them showing us a vaginal condom lol. this was back in 2011 when I was jr and it was the first sex Ed class I had. Finally enough, I'm a big fan of physical affection in other ways. Hugs are my jam, and good old fashioned cuddling is wonderful to me. I just don't have any desire to thrash my bits in a mix with anyone else's.
Also I was in my early thirties before I understood how to express it. Realizing there was a word for how I felt meant there were others like me. I don't want anyone to feel alone and broken for and time, especially not as long as I did.

We had decent sex-ed starting when I was 10 or so. We even had people come in to talk about HIV specifically and learned about different forms of contraception. Looking back though, it saddened me that it was so heteronormative even in the mid-2000s-2010s. It would've saved me a lot of grief and confusion knowing that finding other boys attractive was perfectly normal.

The sex ed videos I remember watching were all from a set of three VHS, that also came with short books, called (title translated in a literal way) "The tree of life". For some reason I was obsessed with them. All I remember is that it was an animation and there were these two kids (a boy and a girl) learning sex ed from their granny who would read about the things to them in form of fairytales.
It was also quite a niche thing, apparently. According to the Wikipedia, that short series was distributed in Italy, France + Canada and Spain + Latin America.

Not gonna lie, the educational commentary actually give me something quick to reference for my two boys because I have no idea what to expect for them. I’ll still read up - I’ve got time… they’re 3 and 1 😂 - but I loved having a top level overview on what to expect when.

I remember in the 90s my teacher would bring in a TV with a VCR (I think it was 6th grade) and this was what we watched, I can't believe how bad it is looking at it now. I did like watching this since we didn't have to do any school work

My 90s sex Ed was DARE. In the 5th grade they put us all in an auditorium then showed us disgusting pics of STDs including a man whose balls were so big he had to carry them around in a wheelbarrel. The pics were so grotesque, absolutely horrifying.

I laughed when they talked about how breasts will develop slowly. From what I recall mine came in pretty damn fast, woke up one day and BAM. The boob fairy was too generous with me. lol

Man, I learned so little growing up in Dallas! The period video was so bad, everyone asked if you pee out the blood. All the teacher (not our normal teacher) said was "no, if you pee blood, that's bad" and that MADE US EVEN MORE CONFUSED. We never learned about the vagina! Or anything else about puberty honestly!

Yeah, this is quite a good one considering, but these days it's very clear to see how non-inclusive the approach was in many respects.
I remember in school I had a health teacher, she was telling us about what happens during pregnancy. She told us "your body might be ready for a kid, but remember YOU ARE NOT READY FOR ONE! Y'all might feel ready, but you are not."
I grew up in Europe. We did writing assignments on our differences, for health class learn about your gender first, afterwards about boys. There was a brief pamphlet on disabilities. In debth look at 5 brain disorders. Bulimia Nirvosa, Anorexia Nirvosa, Autism, Down Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Another covered gay lebian and hemofrodite, people.
We were assigned to watch movie The Closet for homework and our teacher introduced us to someone who was born with a disability. I remember interacting with the person in class for a little bit.

I found this video to be pretty good for explaining sex Ed. It made me cringe in a few places and laugh at others, but other all very good. I remember when I was in primary school, I was very interested in learning everything about the human body. I remember watching an educational kids TV show back in the mid to late 90's, It covered so much and even talked about sexuality. They even sang a song about all the different sexual orientations and how it was okay be be; straight, bi and gay etc...
Towards the end I would point out the part where he says it happens to "all" boys and girls, which is incorrect. If you aren't hitting all the landmarks of puberty, and aren't on hormone blockers. by the time you are in your late teens you need to see a doctor because you might have an endocrine disorder.
also to add onto your comment starting puberty too early can also be a problem as well.

It's not fear mongering when the hospital that your twin sisters were at for the first 2 months of their lives after being born 8 weeks early in 1982 calls their parents and says, "We got some tainted blood in 1982 and we need your 3 yr old daughters to have an HIV test". HIV was very real and very scary in the early to mid 80's.
The fear mongering was how often gay men got blamed for HIV resulting in a lot of homophobia

A little off-topic, but I really appreciate learning the medical terms, because even at 55 I don't always know them. I don't recall learning about the difference between the vulva and the vagina.
I had to go to the doctor once for a boil on my genetals and when they asked where it was, I had this flash of, "I don't think I should use the slang terms," (no idea why, they're medical people, they've probably heard ones I don't even know) and said it was on my vagina, not knowing any other term. They looked and said, "I see, it's on your left labia," and I was thrilled to learn what to call it, at 53.
I remember coming back to school in the Fall and some kids looking so different. Especially the guys. They were practically shaving and they had gotten so much taller. Later, when I had my own kids, my oldest grew so tall so fast he had stretch marks on his back!

I would like to see these actors now in their 40s-50s react to this again. Also, it’s worth mentioning that my younger brother watched this video In school. In 2019. We have progressed very little. Not a bad video for the time, definitely.
The only problems I have with the breast part is 1) they say that all breasts produce milk, when some people are unable to. And 2) they don’t mention that sometimes breasts can grow extremely fast or become too large to handle, which I have an issue with as someone who had boobs early and had them for a while, but when I was around 13, they grew rapidly from probably like a C to now (a couple years later) being about J-K cups (UK sizing)
I started developing breasts and got acne at age 8. By age 12 I wore an A cup bra. The acne still comes and the boobs kept growing.
I don't like them not normalizing irregular menstrual cycles.
I’m so glad you’re looking at these videos. I hope there are more, because your reactions are worth the price of admission. I will say though, that as someone who was in my mid twenties in the 1990’s, the omission of an LGBTQ+ perspective was probably just as much a lack of it being in the mainstream consciousness.as it was a deliberate omission to avoid any references to said communities. Most aware thinking adults at that time were well aware of the existence of at least most of these communities, and were all too aware of the stigma most of society at the time put on these groups. While I’m not trying to defend the omission, I will say that it was not nearly as forefront in the public consciousness as it is today.

Nobody is really 100% sure of what to do when they have a baby for the first time, or even with their second or third baby. Each baby is different, and there is no one right way to parent them. There’s certainly a few wrong ways, but if your baby is fed, clean, and sleeping (for the most part) at the end of the day, and you’re mostly the same way too, it’s all good.

As someone who stopped growing at age 11 at 4 ft 10in, but with two younger brothers who grew very rapidly to be well over six ft, let me tell you my level of confusion about why they had no awareness of the location of their own bodies cannot be overstated. I was so confused, and convinced they were doing it on purpose to annoy me 🤣
Me being the oldest of my siblings, yet the shortest at 4'9, none of us really have vertigo or air wave arm problems. My brother(youngest) stopped at 5'2 and my sister at 5'1.
