- The bitter cold is still in southern Appalachia. Instead of getting out in it Matt and I have stayed close by the woodstove.

I love all you post, and the girls are a blessing to watch.
One of my favourite memories is waking up at my Great grandma's house, sitting at her table and watching the water come up through the little window on the top of the percolator on her stove. The smell of that coffee and of bacon frying will always take me back to that safe wonderful place. Thanks so much for showing us how it's done Mr. Matt & Ms. Tipper! Love from Memphis!~
Love that memory 😊
OOOOOoo same here. I am also not a coffee drinker, but the taste and smell of old fashioned percolated coffee is 100 times better than drip coffee ☕💓
My mom would brew coffee the same way and I also remember seeing the coffee bubbling through that glass bulb at the top.
I remember asking her if I could have a cup, as I wanted to be like the adults, you know how kids are.
She would load it up with sugar and milk. Tasted like a hot coffee milkshake. 😂
It’s how I first developed a love of coffee. I don’t put the milk and sugar in it anymore, though. 😉 😂
@@richardpowell1772 Leave the sugar out and coffee makes a great treatment for hyper-activity in children. My son is in his 40s now, but when he was a child he was badly hyper. I refused to give him drugs, but coffee, with full caffeine, and sesame seeds that I would put over and in everything possible, worked fantastically! I have recommended it many times and every mom had a great experience using them on their child.
@@richardpowell1772 My Great Grandma would pour a little of her coffee in her saucer and drink it out of the saucer, because it was too hot to drink from the cup. I've never seen anyone else do it like that and she'd give me coffee too! I was probably 8 or so and she'd put lots of milk in it and sugar and wanting to be like her, I'd drink mine from the saucer too. That percolated coffee is really good, the taste is a lot less bitter. Not sure where you're from but I'm from Memphis/North MS (so was my MeMaw).
I have been percolating coffee for years in my 1960's 4-cup Corning Ware cornflower design percolator. I find the taste of percolated coffee much nicer than filter or any other kind. Percolating gives a much smoother and richer tasting cup of coffee. I prefer Kenyan coffee beans, which I grind myself. Stovetop percolating fills the house with the wonderful aroma of fresh brewed coffee too.
Those beans sound great 😊
@@CelebratingAppalachia They sure make a real good cup of coffee those Kenyan beans.
I have the Cornflower percolators too. Works great!
I love the Starbucks whole bean in the black label I think it is a reserve, I grind just before I use it. I buy it at trade day flea market lol sounds crazy but a bag at Starbucks is about $20 and I buy it for $3 and it is in date .
I think that the glass thingy is replaceable if necessary.
We used an electric percolator for years and would fly through the first pot before work and often make a second pot. But, we found we were wasting a lot over time and decided to switch to a Keurig. Last year we had a crew in to waterproof our basement. It was very cold that day, so we decided to make coffee for the guys when they arrived. The Keurig only makes single cups, so it would have taken too much time. Therefore, we pulled out the percolator and made a full pot. The one young man couldn't have been more than 23 or 24 years old and he was completely baffled. He had never seen a percolator in his life. We actually had to explain what it was and how it was used.
😊
Haha! Cute, huh?
Isn't that something, I love all the old stuff..
As someone who grew up in a large city with executive parents that worked 24/7…this is stuff I never got to see.Learning about an axe is great❤Loving the new content
Thank you 😊
I just ordered your book can't wait to get it.when you were talk about growing up the things you did it reminded me of the summer when I was out of school I would go to the North Georgia Mtn.and stay with my aunt go to creek bring back water and lots of other things I look back on those days and think what a blessing it was those were the goog days thankful to GOD!!!!!😅
@@shirleydeschenes2759 Thank you!! I hope you enjoy the cookbook!!
My late husband loved to sharpen blades better than anything and that pot of coffee was always on the fire when we were camping. smells so good.I Miss him. This warmed my heart. Thank you for sharing.
One of the things I love about you is how much you take pleasure in simple things. Matt’s love for his coffee is beautiful.
My Dad did this for as long as I can remember. Even after the new ones came out. I can still remember the smell every morning. Thank you Tipper and Matt for taking me back down memory lane. Your family and the girls, feel like my family now.❤️
Matt does a great job giving tutorials. Thank you for sharing Tipper and Matt.
So glad you enjoyed it 😊
My daddy had an electric percolator. Y’all stay warm! My husband says that all those Starbucks coffee’s and lattes instead are not manly coffee. He drinks his coffee the same way Matt does. Straight up black coffee.
We used to have an elderly who had a mobile sharpening business. He had a very old green truck that he would drive around the neighborhood ringing a bell to let everyone know that they could come out with whatever they needed sharpened. We also had a milkman who left the glass milk bottles in the milk box. In the Summer, he would add ice to the box. My husband remembers a rag man who would call out “Ra-aags”, and people would take out their old worn out fabric things to him. Things are so different now.
My dad left me his perk it was also my grandfather’s. It has a glass bubble with its replacement. God was I lucky! I can’t find none like it. It makes the best coffee you could ever buy or brew. Any body who has never had coffee from a perk. I’ll pray for you.😊 great video guy thanks.
What a treasure!
I was brought up old fashioned, an old soul since I was A kid. I enjoyed the old timers when I was young. Listening to them was more entertaining than T. V. The old time ways was being sure footed in life and their skills were honed to accuracy. The virtue of their lives was the Good book, hard work and honesty. Enough said , have a good old fashioned day.
Oh my, when Matt checked the sharpness by shaving his arm, it brought such memories of my dad. His pocket knives were always razor sharp. He had several knives that were so thin from sharping over the years. He used a whetstone . He said a dull knife was a dangerous knife. Miss him so much. Curious Binks was so cute. Have a great week and stay warm.❤❤
Y'all are so precious together. Surely blessed...❤
Matt drinks his coffee like my husband liked his. He called it truckers coffee ☕ It was just a might bit to strong for me though. The old percolator and knife 🔪 sharpening sure brings back fond memories. My Father in-law had ways like Pap. Your videos are such a blessing to me. Y'all stay warm 🥶 Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏💕❄️
I have such sweet memories with my Granddaddy percolating coffee. Smelled wonderful and as a little girl my coffee was mostly milk.😊
Growing up it was very common for my family to use a percolator. We continued to use the percolating method even when Mr. Coffee became popular.
Tipper and Matt…..you two make an excellent team. So glad you all can work together.
Thank you 😊
The smell of percolated coffee, there ain't nothing like it. I appreciate Matt's knowledge and personal preference on sharpening blades. I don't care for those electric sharpeners. Looking forward to seeing the big garden property in the near future. Love y'all, God bless
Just love watching yall.
A wonderful family !!
It’s cold here in Michigan. I come from Pikeville Kentucky originally so myself and all my family are definitely Appalachian. I’m very happy and proud of it just like you all are I love hearing and listening to all your things you have to say about Appalachia the cooking the girls I just love Cory and Katie so much your whole family’s been a very big blessing to me and such a hard time in my lifeFebruary will be one year that I lost my husband he would have been 60 years old but
I'm so sorry you lost him!! Glad you enjoy our videos! We appreciate you 😊
I'm in McCreary and my step mom is from Pikeville
Sorry for your loss.
I've tried all kinds of coffee pots, but my favorite is a plain pour over. Brews the coffee slow and delicious.
I have two gransfors bruk axes. They are so well made and keep an edge. High quality steel. Well worth the money. Matt sure sharpens a knife the right way in my opinion!
Hope Granny is doing well.
Thanks for sharing.
My Momma sharpened all my kitchen knives. She passed away in 2023. I didn't know how to sharpen a knife so I've been cutting with a dull knife for years. Thank you, Matt. Now I can sharpen my knives myself
There is something so comforting about seeing a percolator blurping that coffee up into that glass knob. I have several percolators and while I drink drip coffee, I know I can perk some whenever I want to if for no other reason than to watch it perk. It brings back good memories.
Mama & Daddy used a stove top percolator or dripolator for many years, but eventually got a Mr. Coffee. They liked the percolator for camping, on the campfire, or in the camper. They all will make coffee. They used JFG because it was made near them in Knoxville. Good coffee! This video was great! I have a long whet rock that has two different grits. It seems to work okay. It's good to see Bink winding around amongst youins😊
I’m with Matt on the black coffee. Maxwell House, Original Eight O’clock, or Folgers. Also I prefer hot coffee straight out of a percolator. There is both a flavor and a temperature difference with percolator coffee. Further, Matt and I both are proud to have a custom fixed blade knives hand crafted by Spirit of the Outdoors, Justin Peden over in Mississippi. I bet our knives had origins in the same wood saw blade. I really enjoyed this conversation featuring Matt. Thanks for sharing. - Tennessee Smoky
So glad you enjoyed it!!
My Daddy always made very strong coffee in a percolater, and he would drink that stuff all day.🙏❤️🙂
Love those memories 😀
I’ve been drinking coffee since I was a teenager. In the south, some people had the coffee going all day. I make my coffee strong too, like Matt.
I remember, when visiting my grandparents in Tennessee, to waking up to the best smelling and tasting coffee in the world. I’ll never forget it. Honestly, it was so smooth. Thanks for sharing. Great memories. 😊😊😊
Man after my own heart Matt doesn’t know it yet but after I watch your videos at night I spend the next hour or more watching knife and axe videos lol
My momma and stepfather had a GE electric percolator which would start at a time you would choose. They would “set the percolator “ the night before so the coffee would be ready the minute their good feet hit the floor in the morning. My momma could have her coffee while sitting at her dressing table fixing her hair and makeup for work. Memories! 🥺
Thank you ❤ I enjoyed learning about coffee peculators and the knife and ax sharpening too - I
Am a born raised city girl so I
Learned slot 👍
Mom-mom percolated Eight O'Clock coffe from the A & P store and, in cold weather, served it to everyone old enough for both dinner and supper. I will never forget the day I saw a big white coffee cup and saucer had been placed on the table beside my plate for the first time. Like your daddy, Pop-pop always sat in the same chair before the T.V. in the dining room, with Mom-mom's wood rocker right beside it, and he had sat in rocker in the kitchen when he was in there. I can see those two rooms in my mind exactly as they were so many years back through imaginary tears of longing and loss, but also sweet comfort and joyous remembrance.
Love those memories 😊
Yes! Another black coffee drinker! I love my coffee black as well. So did my mom. It’s the best, especially on cold winter mornings! I knew there was a reason I liked you, Matt! Lol!😅
My mom had a kitchen knife for 50 plus years that was very thin by the time she passed away. I wish I had that knife, just because of the memories of her using it most of my life.
That's sweet about your memories of your daddy testing the sharpness on his arm. I never heard of that. And I love how Binks randomly has been making special appearances. ♥️🐱 Stay warm!
Yes, you can always tell when a man has sharpened his knife because he will have a bald spot on his arm. It's sharp when it will shave hair.
I love some simple, hot coffee with a little cream. Thanks for sharing your blade sharpening skills. God bless y’all! ❤️😀
Man! the Ol Percolator! My dad and Gradad been percolating Coffee this way since I can remember.
The smell and taste I always loved it more than any other way.
Before I was adopted I was about 3 years old and still remember the smell of Coffee Fried Eggs and refried beans at 4am. Typical West Texas breakfast we call (Huevos Rancheros…Ranch Style Fried Eggs) the smell of percolating coffee brings back so many good memories.
Grandad was hard at it in the kitchen! He always percolated his coffee. I’ll never forget the smell of eggs and coffee in the morning. Dad still did this growing up. He still loves Percolating coffee.
Thank you Wyatt 😊
My grandpa loved his perculator coffee the smell was wonderful. My dad swore by the perculator he said the Mr Coffee maker never got the coffee hot enough. He liked his coffee boiling hot. We still have my dads perculator and use it on occasion. My dad was a knife sharpener friends neighbors would have him sharpen their knives and axes. He was very good at it. Good memories ❤
I have a Corning-ware percolator that belonged to my grandmother. I use it, occasionally. I bought an espresso machine that makes great coffee. However, I like the sound and smell when using the percolator and it makes me happy to know that it belonged to my grandmother. Thanks for the knife sharpening lesson. There’s a lot more to it then I thought.🇨🇦❤️😀
My great grandma always had two percolating pots. One for coffee and one for leftover biscuits. Don't know how she did it. It did not matter how many had came by to see her and got a biscuit; there was still at least one biscuit in there! 😆 May Jesus continue to bless you and your family
Those apples look delicious :-)!
I remember percolated coffee, growing up in East Tennessee. It smelled so good. I remember my mother giving me some coffee to play with in my tea set, as a child. It was common for children to have a little bit of coffee, while growing up. Babies were sometimes given biscuit dipped in sweetened coffee. It was called “soakee” All of the things I have seen in your videos is so familiar to me. The food is the same as I ate growing up. The south is a beautiful place, and I still have relatives in Tennessee. We moved to the Midwest in the ‘60’s. My mom and dad and 12 children.
Well, I skipped the knife sharpening part but came back for the coffee and Tippers drink. Glad I did cause I cracked up when Matt used the term drawtail. Gosh my Mom probably hollered that out a dozen times a day when we were growing up in the Ozark hills, Had not head that in years. Thanks for the memories. Sorry I did not see the coffee perking. Mom always made coffee on the stove like that
I remember my dad sharpening knives. Thanks for bringing back that memory.
I'm with you Matt,I bought a perculater a year ago I love the coffee muck better then a Mr.Coffee
Thank you Rita 😀
I remember the old percolators. Coffee was so much better in them. I need to find one again for myself. Awesome memories of coffee in one of those. 💙
The bail handle makes that coffee maker even more useful.
The Gransfors Bruks axes are nice. I’ve got a collection myself.
Glad your enjoying that knife. Thanks for the shout out . I like rhat black coffee too.
I remember my Grandma Myrtle using her little metal coffee pot with a clear top. I loved to see the coffee jump up in the little topper. It smelled so good when my sister and I would spend the night. Grandma Myrtle and Paw paw John lived near the zoo. I was always hoping a little monkey might get free and I could catch it. Crazy the ideas children have, huh? I like my coffee like my daddy’s mama though. Grandma Beat and I like our milk with a little coffee in it.🤣🤣🤣 🐒 ☕️🤣🤣🤣
Good afternoon folks, now that is a man's cup of coffee. Thanks for the great video. Take care.
Thank you Matt, you touched my heart today. My Grandfather sharpened his tools with a wet stone and a strop, I always liked to watch him. He also drank black coffee made in an enamel percolator on top of our coal stove. Wife of James
So glad you enjoyed this one 😊
4 degrees here in North Central WV this morning. I hate the cold 😅....... Been here 65+ years. Great video! Thanks for sharing! 😊 Stay warm & safe. 😊
I really appreciate your "tutorial" videos. I hope it's ok to say that you guys are a bit like surrogate parents to me. I'm learning things from you that I should have learned in my youth, but my parents were too lost to teach us. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤💐
So glad you enjoy them!! Thank you 😊
Bless your heart. Your comment just kind of grabbed me by the throat and brought tears to my eyes. Praying tonight for all the children of "lost" parents. May the Lord bless you with a lifetime of pure love and happiness. ❤🙏❤

I enjoyed every minute of the video. I told my wife she could buy me a Granfors Bruk Hunters Axe for our 54th anniversary next Tuesday, and if she ordered it right now it will be here just in time. 🤣she told me hunting season was over.
I made a fire in my daughters fire pit on July 4 th she said my momma the pioneer woman and I said no I just watch celebrating Appalachia and learned from it. Thank you Matt!
Love that 😊
I’m from the era of percolated coffee. I always new the “filter” piece as Matt referred to it as the “basket” that the grounds went in. Same thing though. It does the filtering too. It takes knowing how long to perc it according to strength you like it. It smells so good perking! Not everyone made “good” coffee in those days, lol! Thanks, Matt! For the knife sharpening too! I have the old good steel knives, not those stainless steel ones.
I remember my grandparents using a percolator every morning and the coffee smelled amazing! I think they let me have some though , like another viewer, it was mostly milk. And, my dad always sharpened knives that way and tested them on his arm. Your videos allow us to connect to the past and the present. Thank you and God bless
Hi Tipper & Matt, it's definitely cold & windy here in Connecticut ! We had a snow storm last week! This video brought back memories of my parents, aunts & uncle using their peralators to make their coffee. The smell was amazing! My Dad used to sell cords of woods in his retirement years. He did that till he was 80 yrs. old. He had the neatest cords of wood piled up.😊He always had smaller pieces for campers! His customers loved him! I remembered him sharpening his axe & keeping his chain saw in good repair. 😊
I loved hearing the percolator in my grandmother's kitchen - it was a big day when she got an electric percolator one year for christmas -but she saved that one for special occasions and kept using her stove top one until she passed away in the late 70s. I use a percolator myself now when camping
'Ooowee! That'll put hair on your chest and sparkle in your eyeballs!' Matt drinking strong, black coffee would've brought out the remarks from my city relatives. My mountain family would've asked for seconds!
I live in the same house I was born in, my daddy used to sharpen knives on the back step, the groove is still there.
Thank you, Miss Tipper and Mr. Matt...stay warm...
Love yours and Matt's banter on any subject. Thanks for letting us listen in 💕 You two have so much useful knowledge, thank you for sharing!😊
Matt - I've been into knives and axes since I was a kid. Appreciate you discussing your techniques. Here's a thought: for years I didn't know the proper technique for splitting wood, let alone using a regular axe for chores around the house. I bet everyone would appreciate watching you demonstrate how to use an axe for various activities. For years I didn't know the difference between a regular axe vs. a wood splitting axe. Keep up the great work. Never saw those hand sharpeners either. Here's to an early Spring! Love you, too, Tipper!!
Thanks Matt for showing us how to make percolating coffee
My parents came to visit us one time many years ago and he reminds me a lot of Matt. He made the comment that he wished he would have brought his knife sharpener stuff with because my knives weren’t sharp enough for him. Lol.
Love that 😊
My husband likes strong coffee and I tried to convince him to get a Percolator and he thinks it would be to much bother. Matt filled the whole basket with coffee for not the full pot of water, that must of been strong. It is good you show these basic teachings on your channel, it amazes me how young people do not know how anything works.
I'm 53 and my mama always percolated her coffee and I never really paid attention to how she did it. Then of course the electric ones came into play. Now I want a percolator coffee pot! Thanks Matt for reminding me and showing us how to use it.
My mom used a percolator like that for a long time, till she got an electric percolator, then later when Mr Coffee makers came out she got one of them. My mother in-law ask us to find her an old percolator to use on her stove, but she failed to tell us she asked her other son to get her one too. Now she has two, but she says her glass top stove eyes are to big and she can’t use them, but she’s going to hold on to them anyway. 😂 Fun hanging out by video with y’all. Always fun and interesting conversations.
this video has motivated me to sharpen all my gardening shears.😁
My parents had a percolator when I was growing up. I used to make the coffee for them at times. I have always loved the smell of coffee but never acquired a taste for it. My grandparents on both sides of the family had percolators. After I became an adult and moved on, my parents went to Mr Coffee. ☕😃
I appreciate the sharpening demo, Matt. My husband always sharpened our knives with a set like yours, but I didn't pay enough attention. My dad always sharpened kitchen knives across a crock. It works, but I can see why this is a better way.
Coffee pots are the best. Mine is from a long time ago and is made from aluminum and I love it. I grind my beans and that is what makes the best coffee, fresh ground beans. My bride bless her heart does not like it at all but she tolerates my old timey ways.
It was so sweet to see Matt’s smile when you mentioned how Pap pronounced the word smelled. That smile on Matt’s face seemed to say that it brought up some sweet sentimental memories.
Wonderful idea on marking your ax handle for measuring, never thought about doing that! We have watched ya’ll for several years now and really enjoy watching your show. We watch the girls vlog as well, ya’ll did a great job raising them. Thanks for sharing, we love the cooking shows too. Have a wonderful week. God bless ya’ll!
Thank you so much 😊
We have enjoyed some of Matt’s coffee and it is delicious! I also put butter in my coffee each morning along with MCT oil; it’s called bulletproof coffee 😉. I have to have cream in mine and Lon is straight black; sometimes with a little honey in his. Stay warm 😇
Thank you Robbie Lynn 😊
I bought my husband a Sunbeam electric percolator at the Thrift store for $7.00 - we are still trying to figure out the best grind to use, etc. - I haven’t watched your video just yet. Just had to check in to see how you guys are doing. My husband just returned from Gatlinburg. I looked for the pottery mugs you and Matt have but didn’t find any. Lots of snow in TN and very very cold BRRR - love watching you guys. So very happy that you guys do what you do. It’s such a pleasure to live vicariously through your family. ❤️❤️❤️
I grind my own med course texture! Do you remember those grinding machines in the grocery stores? Well around my house some stores still have them, and there is a grind specially for percolators.
Thank you Kim!! We are doing good and hope you all are too. We hope to have some mugs available soon 😀
I like that coffee maker because if your electricity goes out you can still have coffee🙏🏻💕
Thank you for watching 😀
My Mama would have been 95 in October. I remember well waking up to the smell of coffee perking on the stove. I actually still have that same little metal coffee pot and occasionally ill pull it out and use it. Good morning again from cold, icy North Mississippi.
Grandma always said that if the hens quit laying, she'd put the axe in the hen house. Motivation! At one time I had a Pyrex percolator.s Even the stem was glass. I've forgotten what happened to it. I think it disappeared when the kids came along. My Norwegian grandma made boiled coffee in a porcelain pot. You could stand a spoon in it. The aroma of it boiling on a wood cookstove would lift you right out of bed in the morning. Love y'all.
Hahaa! My husband always tested his knife sharpness on his arm too, lol! That brought back a good memory to me.
Yes when I was a little girl my mother had a perculator and I loved to watch it. What a nice memory ❤
I have been drinking black coffee all my life everyday used an old percolator for years like my granddad and my Dad my Mom and Dad always had coffee on the smell of coffee as long as I can remember I still have coffee on all the time I like it Blessings to every one watching good stuff like this This is life at the best
My dad used to sharpen his knives with a stone. Thanks for the good memories of how it was done and done so well in the past. Keep it going, Matt!
Matt you right coffee taste better in a boiling pot on a wood stove i sure miss the good old days
I like 8 o’clock coffee too.❤❤
Percolator coffee is great! Eight O’Clock is what my husband likes, so that is all we buy. Matt is a very smart fella in so many ways. I love you all. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. God bless you all.
Thank you 😊
Loved watching the sharping of your axe. By husband would have loved this post. I will show it to him later. Thank you for sharing.
Great video
Enjoyed so much. I m wanting a cup of coffee ☕ now 😊
Evening, Miss Tipper, Matt. Stay warm.

I used to watch Mommy perc coffee and it smaller so good!!! Not very familiar with the aces and knives but you just carry on Matt. You’re somewhat of a teacher!! God bless and much love!! 🤗💕🙏🏻
Sure enjoyed your visit. There was a Man in Wi. born with out arms and he made his living sharping blades, he had to eat with feet and drive too. God Bless.💕& 🙏🙏'ers. Jean
Hi Tipper and Matt Count your blessings I do mine!!!
My folks have always used a percolator . My dad says if you have to add cream and sugar to your coffee then you dont really like the taste of coffee. 🙏❣🧸🧸🐱🐶
Pap said that too 😀
I love watching your videos, my husband loves to percolate his coffee too. He uses the old fashioned one you put on the stove.❤
I grew up watching my dad percolate coffee. Coffee tastes so much better cooked that way. I still have his.
Another excellent video. From the coffee making to the sharpening. Gonna have to try the sharpeners you have. Putting the marks on the handle is a great idea. You two are a good team
I love my corning glass percolator on the stove!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I remember those 😀
Mom had a percolator she used when I was growing up. It was Pyrex and clear glass and I still have it. I also picked up one from an estate sale and when my Son and his Wife moved away to start their own household I gave them the extra one. I told them it was about 50 years old and would last a lifetime if taken care of. I remember using those aluminum or stainless steel ones on bivouacs or during camping and although I'm no coffee drinker, I think it tastes better thru one of those more so than the plastic Mr Coffee type machines.
Your kids enjoy a coffee with you that's the highlight of my weekend when I'm not working
