    Lets address some common comments:
    1. "I don't get a virus as I use common sense" - if the largest corporates in the world get hacked with multi-million dollar tech and training, trust me when I say your "common sense" isn't a defense. Literally, anyone can be caught off guard, unfocused, or even threatened (seen this firsthand).
    2. "I don't have an anti-virus and I have been fine for years" - If you run Windows with constant updates, the operating system has safeguards built in. Unless you specifically disabled those in the registry, they are there.
    3. "I never install anything/ I never click on an email" - you don't have to. Just visiting specific sites that have malware on them, makes you a target (see this video where I show it - th-cam.com/video/nkp8xBM7L0Q/w-d-xo.html)
    4. "I removed Windows and use Linux" - congrats. your parents must be proud. Fact is that Linux for Desktop for a typical home used is shit. Its free and yet still less than 1% of the OS world wide - why is that? oh right - its shit. For servers and security/ pentesting there is no better than Linux. For home user, its shit.
    5. "I haven't been infected without any security" - how do you know? Malware that adds its targets onto the BotNet hides and uses your system. This can happen for years before you even know its there. Just Google stories on corporate hacks and see how long the malware was active before they detected it....sometimes its years.
    6. "I have downloaded pirated software for years with no issues" - Thanks for admitting it and putting that on line thinking its never going to bite you. Good luck with that. Re: no issues, see point number 5.
    7. "They don't want my stuff" - nope. They do. If they are on your computer and see nothing they like (like the passwords you are still saving in your browser), they use your own email system to send emails to all your contacts to infect them. Every piece of information has value to someone.
    8. "I never open emails I don't know" - Really? So if your mom/ best friend sends you an email, you wouldn't open it? See point 7.
    My point is simple: Security is complicated. There is no "just do this and nothing will happen".
    As they say in the business, there are two types of people in the world: Those who have been hacked, and those who don't know they have been hacked.
    The aim is to share as much security knowledge as I can with you to minimize you being a target of this multi-million industry.
    If this channel is not for you, feel free not to watch.
    It's free for you to watch with no paywall barrier.
    Costs me a fortune to run, but I do this to help as many people as I can not.
    I work in this industry and see first-hand how devastating identity fraud can be.
    How devastating extortion/ blackmail is on a family when someone threatens to release private moments onto the net.
    I want to prevent that from happening to as many people as I can.
    If you think you are smarter than all the corporates in the world, all the government agencies in the world, and all the people who hang out on the Darkweb - be my guest.
    For the rest of us, I share the info freely so you can make educated decisions.
    You are my people and is why I do this!

      The biggest corporations have a special problem: employees who feel free to ignore the rules, who are unsophisticated and undertrained, and an unwillingness by management to stop personal use of computers. I was in charge of technology planning and development for a Fortune 250 firm, so I have been up close with these issues. The worst offenders are those at the lower levels and worst of all, those at the top. That is why it is so hard to implement strong policies. I am now a partner in a much smaller and more professional environment and we have no issues with running our machines "barefoot". It may not be for everyone, but if you can do it you are actually better off with this approach. Of course, if is also important to implement strong backup strategies. And most important of all, to remember that anti-malware software is less than 100% reliable. As always, your situation and experiences are likely to vary.

For example, setting up the router in bridge mode or exposed host, so that the PC can be reached from outside via the public ip directly.

    Torrents (at least for executables) have been notorious for a long time as sources of viruses. It's gotten to the point where files are more likely to be infected than not infected. Even legal software from torrents should be scanned for viruses.
    And one should always run an ad-blocker in their browser. You can easily whitelist safe sites for it. It saves a lot of reboots.

    Hello Mr. Segev! I was actually curious about which antivirus for the best protection against malware and other security vulnerabilities and VPN services are the best for someone who occasionally has to take their laptop to a college campus for classes. I know not to trust public Wi-Fi and I keep hearing that VPNs can really help bypass potential threats like man-in-the-middle attacks. Which antivirus software and VPN services do you recommend from an honest viewpoint?
    Currently, I have McAfee Live safe antivirus installed which is supposed to have a VPN service. Spoiler alert, it doesn’t have one in my plan. It was supposed to have it though. Also is it true that McAfee antivirus becomes a virus threat after your plan expires? Thank you for taking time to read this and I’d appreciate a honest response sir. Be safe!

    It's what you do on the net that causes problems. If you don't do silly things the chances of getting infected are fairly small. I was hit once to the point that I had to refromat the laptop and install Linux to get rid of the infection but mostly people get hit by nuisance malware, not viruses. If they do the wrong thing when they get these bogus messages or emails, that is when the real hassles start. We got rid of all the BS anti virus software years ago and have just been using the Windows security software. it has done very well and most freebie anti-viruses are infuriating to live with.

If you don't get in an accident your first trip to the store, do you stop wearing your seatbelt? That said, it's good to know you can even be trying to get infected and still avoid it.

    • @factChecker01
      @factChecker01 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that anyone who does the downloads he did toward the end would get his PC infected very quickly. I thought that his statement about "immediate" was more about how long a virus might be active but hidden, not about how long it would take to get a virus.

    • @randomstuff-qu7sh
      @randomstuff-qu7sh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think he was referring to how long it takes to know you've been infected, since malware generally tries to stay hidden until it has completed its tasks. That said, complacency is a legit problem. People tend to forget how dangerous some everyday tasks, like driving, really are. They allow themselves to get distracted, conveniently forgetting that 30 mph = 44 feet per second. All it takes is being distracted at the wrong moment.

    I've been using the Windows built anti-virus for years, all the family, and even the office, never anything got in.

    I am willing to bet you had the laptop connected behind a firewall (router). Run this again but this time connect the laptop directly to a modem so it gets a public ip. Having a direct connection to the internet vs running through nat might actually have something happen that would be interesting.

      Actually it was connected directly to the internet with a dedicated public ip address and no firewall in my Tier 2 data center. But hey - always awesome to make assumptions so guess you lost that bet 😂😂😂

      @LironSegev  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So just to be clear, you use a Windows computer and the first thing you do is go into settings and disable the firewall and Defender and then stop all the security updates because THAT created problems?
      yeah. ok.

    The fact that downloading dodgy software is the best way to get a virus, is also why most "free antivirus" searches will end up with infected software. Internet is a lot like your home town: If you know where youre going youre likley to be safe, but if you go down a dark unknown alley your chances of getting attacked is inevitably higher!

    Is Chromebook safe to use? Google advertising saying that the Chromebook doesn't need it because it's already protected. And what about Apple iPhones and Android phones? Do they need any antivirus protection? Thank you for sharing.

    I guess im just not dodgy enough?

    Malware doesn't _need_ lots of resources to operate. It could also be written to use a minimum of CPU so it is not even noticeable

    I haven’t used an antivirus outside of Windows Defender in years. Kinda dumb considering I don’t know how to remove malware.

    A few years ago I built a computer for a guy, who called me after about three months,. bitching that his system "didn't work right". I took my kit over there and found his system was riddled with Malware; it was so bad it took Windows 10 almost 5 minutes to boot!. He was not running ANY kind of protection. I fixed everything, managed to save his "data" and reinstalled Windows. I then installed Avast free version and advised him to upgrade. I charged him 200 bucks for the three hours I spent on this, as I did warranty his hardware, but not the software. Lesson learned.
    I see multiple sites that will tell you that you don't need to run an anti-virus, waste of time and money and resources, blah blah blah.. I think Lion has helped a lot here to put that notion to rest.

      Holy...charging 200$ to install an antivirus and run a scan, so much work indeed. This is why people with less knowledge about computers should avoid tech stores, they will just rip ignorant people off

    This reminds me of this woman that lives above where I work. She comes in all excited last night she got a laptop. This morning she came in all flustered because they were on file sharing sites and boom she's getting pop ups and ransomware type messages. She came back later, she'd turned off the computer, and now she can't get it to turn back on, she said it's locked out. She had it less than 24 hours. Amidst all this she asked me how to download movies. Ma'am torrenting just isn't for you. You're currently locked out and you want to try again if you get back into the laptop?

    One question about 'clicking on'. Can't malware writers reconfigure the Close Window cross of a popup to actually stand as a "Yes I agree DL me some garbage" click?

    Windows Defender only turns off temporarily for a few minutes or until a restart unless you disable the service manually in Group Policy Editor in Pro editions or through the registry in home editions.... So, of course you didn't get an infection...

    Did U shut off even windows defender and firewall for this test?

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      when we run Malware tests, let's just say we run a bunch of our own pieces of code that neutralize the machine's protection. These would be instantly stopped if they were in the wild but since we first stop the anti-virus we are able to run these scripts.

    The only malware that makes it’s presence known is Ransomware AFTER it’s already too late.
