Awe man. Back in the me and G-pa went to a private club and caught over 60 bullheads. Took them to the Cook County forest preserve ponds. Would find black folks. Great people. Would ask if they wanted some bullheads. They said sure. We would dump that bucket. They would exclaim Oh Lordy Lordy! Felt so good to make good folks happy. God blesses those who help others.
Back many years ago, my granddad had a pond dug out back in the late 60s. He used to stock the pond with channel catfish, bluegill, and bass. My dad and I would fish that pond behind his house when I was a kid in the late 90s. The channel catfish were gone, but plenty of bluegill and bass remained. Not sure when this happened, but somehow two different species of bullhead catfish were introduced in that pond. Black and yellow bullheads. There are so many in that pond these days. Some up to 2 pounds at the most. Good eating fish. Plenty to go around. Fun to catch. I use my light action setup with 6 lb line to catch them.
Good stuff Tom. I had a day of 25 or so the other night. I finally found a lake where the average bullhead is eatable size. Used a size 1 circle hook and not one gut hooked. Happy fishing.
That's a talent. I've always known Bullheads to be among the WORST offenders when it comes to swallowing hooks. Freshwater Drum, Smallmouth Bass are also pretty bad for that. One thing I really love about Common Carp and Channel Cats, they virtually NEVER swallow a hook. Carp are always hooked nice and clean in the corner of the mouth.
@@herbsuperb6034 ya usually bullheads swallow the hook. But with the combo of the circle hook and the fact they were bigger bullhead and being so many I wonder if they were picking up the bait and swimming off to keep other ones from trying to steal it. And the fish swimming off is what you want with the circle hook for it to work properly.
You don't even need a lot of water to catch bullheads. We had a creek on our farm property that would go dry in spots over the summer, but where there were still a few inches of water around, you could always catch a mess of bullheads. Same in an old pond that had mostly silted over but was maybe 6 or 7 inches deep.
I have had bullheads just sit there after taking the bait/hook and didn't know I had a fish until I reeled in the line. Also theon ones in our have sharp pointy teeth.
im glad im not the only one i was fishing today with rods out and throwing a top water and i heard my rod move like a centimeter on the concrete reeledx in 4 rods and the last one had a little bullhead i didnt even know a fish was on there all the ones ive caught just eat the bait and sit there lol
Every lake around me is filled with Bluegills and Bass that get to the bait before Bullheads if I use worms. I use Chicken livers and only the Bullheads bite usually.
Man never seen someone catch so many that fast!! Down south we use them to catch flathead catfish with!! They make great bait. Those 52 bullheads in this area could produce you about 25 flatheads weighing anywhere from 5-50lbs each!! Thanks for the video
For smaller fish like this I like to use an ultralight setup like you would use for panfish so you can detect bites easier and geta good fight out of it!
Back when we were kids growing up in Nebraska, the only place we could walk to to fish in the summer was a little creek running through town. It had bullheads. Mostly small, but some 8 inches. The swallowed the hook something fierce. They are not the greatest fish, but we had some really good times
Use a 3/8oz maybe 1/2oz jig, and they won’t swallow the hook and you won’t have to re tie a hook every time. Works wonders and I think using different colours helps too. Good flathead bait
You were in the hot spot today. Any limit on them and how do you clean them, filet or skin. Out here I think the limit is 20 or 25 for the agg. How long did it take you to clean them??
Those bullheads are a FABULOUS Flathead Cat bait. Is it legal to harvest Bullheads and use them for Flathead bait in Iowa? Dead ones will get taken by big channel cats, too.
I was kind of disappointed when I saw how small they were… but then I see you catch over 50 and I must say, KEEP EM COMIN. small or not, over 50 is a good mess of fish
Had fun catching these with my Grandma, but i wouldn't handle them because of the spines. Watched her get stabbed so many time while she was taking them off the hook or cleaning them! No thank you!!
No need for an entire worm use floating jigs with a sinker to keep the jog 4-6" off bottom and a chunk of nightcrawler just big enough to cover the shank of the jig and they almost never swallow a floating jig.

7:59 something blew up under that tree. Great vid

I have never in 57 years seen anybody cut their worm with a scissors.
My chainsaw was out of gas.
@@OutsidewithTom that's why I have an electric one
I actually like the idea 👍
I cut worms with scissors, clams too when fishing the ocean
Never in mine have I ever thought to use a knife or scissors.. yet I'd squeeze them apart with my fingers.
Good stuff Tom. I had a day of 25 or so the other night. I finally found a lake where the average bullhead is eatable size. Used a size 1 circle hook and not one gut hooked. Happy fishing.
Right on!

You're right, bullheads can survive in places most fish can't.
Love the timer you put in the video to show how quickly those bullheads were biting. 30 seconds? That’s awesome!
Glad you liked it!
Great haul Tom. I wish we had those here in Vegas. That would be a good thing to stock for the kids
Yeah, good fun for kids.
I use hot dog cut up soaked overnight in strawberry jello powder. I use #4 circle hooks. Slider rig with a swivel, just like your using.
👍
I've caught many of these on trotline and I have a creek on my property that is full of them all from six to ten inches.
I have had bullheads just sit there after taking the bait/hook and didn't know I had a fish until I reeled in the line. Also theon ones in our have sharp pointy teeth.
You mean like a shark 🦈? 😂

For small stuff I like to use a cheap rod and about 4 lb test with drag super light. Makes small bullhead and bluegill a fun catch.
Have you ever tried circle hooks? I’ve got some smaller ones after a buying binge.
They would probably work.
My bulkheads manage to swallow my circle hooks 😅

Lots of catfish nuggets 🎣👍
Those are great flathead catfish bait where legal to use. I need to get my 100-gallon bait tank ready for the season and loaded with some of those.
How do I find my limit on bullheads here in Michigan? It's not clear on Google if there is one
I suggest get your info direct from the state regulations book and nowhere else. Other sources may not be accurate.
You local DNR. I'd search Michigan DNR info on bullhead fish daily bag limit. I'm in Wisconsin. We also have no daily limit on size or quantity.
what time were you out there @Outside with Tom?
Shouldn't the bell go onto the rod? When I'm fishing for bullheads as baits I employ drop shot rig, and they work wonder as well
where you from in IA Tom? I live in easter IA
I'm on the other side.

I’ve never kept them that small. Lots of work cleaning them all
looks like a blast
really good fish for making fiddlers
Do you clean them the traditional way where you pull the skin off with pliers? Jw would like to try this but need an efficient way to clean
Yep, I skin them.
Wow wish they was a pomd in west Virginia that has bull head like that
Wow that was a good time fishing! I've yet to catch a bullhead. I know we have them but I can only fine tiny channels.
You were in the hot spot today. Any limit on them and how do you clean them, filet or skin. Out here I think the limit is 20 or 25 for the agg. How long did it take you to clean them??
No limit here, I skin them. Took about an hour.
They say their skin contains many pollutants.
@@andriyshapovalov8886 Who's they, and don't eat the skin
Very nice stuff, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
1 oz for 10lbs! I throw wrong or too hard because i feel like i can't throw too many times without making the sinker is not going to fly
Sheesh that is catfish heaven, whoa!
Those bullheads are a FABULOUS Flathead Cat bait. Is it legal to harvest Bullheads and use them for Flathead bait in Iowa? Dead ones will get taken by big channel cats, too.
Yep, we can use them for bait.
Here in Ontario 🇨🇦I’m only allowed one line in the water.
The solution?
Bring some friends.👍
Looks soo fun
Have a friend that says mud cats are unfit to eat. Catches them out of his pond and tosses them.
He be wrong.
That is a LOT of fish to clean...lol
Wasn't too bad, thanks for watching.
Sunny’s are going to tear that up where I’m at
Great 50 catfish!
If you use a 1/4oz jig head they won't swallow it...
8:00 fish comes up and surfaces behind him
Good eye. Yep, those were spawning carp. They were all over the shorelines that day.
What kind of Rod holders you using and how did you make them
Gear list in the video description.
It'd be nice if I could find a place near me with bullheads.
Good luck!
Heck I have them all over and I still can't find them, just tiny channels lol
I’d prefer to catch channel but my local lake is full of bullhead
Bait holder hook got barbs on the back
The whole damn key is using a small hook. I use to use a circle hook (one i used for channel catfish) and lets just say it was alot of missing bait
Hey Tom you shouldn't have edited out the part where you called in the cat fish. Winner winner cat fish dinner
Lol 😀
I hate how i wtite shit on TH-cam and sometimes the text is so long it ends up in another video (because stupid TH-cam keeps Puting auto play)
Caught a very dramatic bullhead, so dramatic in fact, I thought he was a carp!
New sub 👍😲🤩
Welcome aboard!

I hate catching these
Probably not as much as they hate it. 😁
