Scramblin' on the Gravel-hala Skyway

  • In late fall, Mr. Nick McFly and I took our Triumph Scramblers onto the off-pavement parallel (literally) to the famed motorcycle byway, the Cherohala Skyway, we call the Gravel-hala Skyway. On our way there, we passed through the famed Tail of the Dragon, Highway 129. Most of the Gravel-hala is also part of the 3-day track of the Smokey Mountains 500, which I cover on the channel. This would be a great off-the-slab ride for someone new to dirt and gravel, like Nick! Check out Nick's scramblin' adventures on the Mr. Nick McFly channel: / @mrnickmcfly
    Chapters:
    00:00 Intro
02:29 129 & The Tail of the Dragon
    04:34 Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest
    05:20 Start of the Gravel-hala
09:09 Pee break, wrong turn, wiener dog attack
10:55 Gas up and wrap up

Can't argue with you at all :) I am blessed to be in an area in which there is great on and off road riding in every direction. However, I would love a chance to ride in your neck of the woods!

Love that area, can't remember the road but found it leaving Indian boundaries during MMM and it turned into a proper mountain rock road we called it the dirt tail of the dragon. Came out 2 mountains over.

Nice ride! Close call with that black rat…Kind of looked like you rolled up on a scene from breaking bad at that point.

Fortunately I saw the little bugger before he came around the truck. We actually made a wrong turn, by not taking that turn, since it looked like it dead-ended in their "camp." Once I saw we were off the track, circled back. The guys there all waved so I wasn't too worried, though the Dachshund could have been part of their ambush plans, lol.

I've been all up there on street bikes a zillion times, but I'm new to Dual sport. Also getting old. I love the ride you guys took, but I need clear directions how to find it on my own. Can you help with that?

Me too! I had ridden by the start of the Gravel-hala a bunch of times. When we set out on this ride, I wasn't sure exactly where the gravel started (from the NC side), but it's just after where Nick hijacked my camera (in the video), which is just off where Santeetlah Rd intersects with the Skyway. It's Old Santeetlah Rd. It's literally just behind this pulloff on the Skyway. Old Santeetlah is pictured just behind the sign. goo.gl/maps/iDNAcnannWjiKUtR6

My email is tennreb63@gmail.com. Email me and I can send you some GPS tracks. You can also go to the Smokey Mountains 500 FB group and select "files" and download the latest tracks for the 500...which includes the Gravel-hala. It was Nick's second time off highway and he had a good time...or so he said, lol.

My dream bike. I figured that if I get another part time job, buy only food and pay bills, cut my own hair, eat only once a day…I will be able to get one in 13 months.

@@mst1269 I've really enjoyed it, though I've struggled with it's weight on the rough stuff. I've decided that the more advanced trails and jeep roads and single track are better left for true dual sport bikes, lol. I get a lot more compliments on the Scrambler than I have for any other bike I've owned. Waiting a year probably isn't a bad move. Prices are premium at the moment. In Nov. 2020, I picked mine up for just over $10k with just under 4k miles on it, but I had to drive over 500 miles round trip to get it (in Fayetteville, NC). My local shop had the same bike, used, with similar miles, for just over $13k recently. Hopefully that will smooth out by the time you are ready.
