Redneck Dragon and Cataloochee

  • Great fall ride along the boundary of and into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A few friends, including my cousin Randy from Washington, took some backroads to Cosby, TN, where we picked up highway 32, which we affectionately refer to as the Redneck Dragon. 32 skates along the east boundary of the Smokies, not unlike it's twin on the west end, Tail of the Dragon. We call it the Redneck Dragon because at the TN / NC state line, it turns to gravel for just over a mile. We scrambled on the gravel to the Cataloochee section of the park to hopefully see some elk but no luck. The elk had done some scrambling themselves. A fine day on 2 wheels on some curvy slab and easy dirt and gravel through some beautiful country.

We have world famous twisty roads here...but I'm telling you it's a lot like where you are. I'm still finding some dirt and gravel. Hoping to do a little of the TAT that passes through Southeastern TN the week after I get back from up there.

I’d like to hear more of that Scrambler 1200 soundtrack!

I ran the one camera backwards to shoot my buddies, but they decided not to keep up, lol. I would've left more engine noise in on the helmet cam, but I blabbered the whole time so I added the music, lol.

@@Road_Rash1 what tires are you running?

@@johndemmink3539 Running Michelin Anakee Wilds at the moment. It's a 50/50 adv tire, nobbies. Some of the blocks on the outside are linked which makes them super stable even on asphalt. Off road, they are awesome. Problem is they were extremely fast on asphalt. I have less than 3k on my rear and am replacing it tomorrow (ahead of Mario's 2WR ADV ride). Front is still okay. I'm going to try a less aggressive off-road tire next time around (will be feeling out the group next week on their tire choices and experience). I'm also trailering to WV this time to save some wear (and highway miles on a naked bike).

I should've let you know. My cousin is in town with his big bimmer and we haven't gotten to ride before. I put it out for my buddies on the Crew page. I need to add you there.

Hey, Steven. Welcome to east Tennessee! Mr. Nick McFly and I are planning to ride on Sunday. Heading over to the Hartford, TN, area to ride some dirt and gravel up to Max Patch (NC). We might do the Redneck Dragon on our way back. Email me at tennreb63@gmail.com if you would like to join us. If not then, maybe some other time.

Great video! Any tips for some gravel roads/trails near Robbinsville?

Hi, Jean. There are some good dirt/gravel near Robbinsville. My very first video, I rode over to Murphy NC and came back through Robbinsville. On my way back to there, I picked up a couple of roads from the Smokey Mountains 500. There is a FB group where you can get the gpx files for the total route, including the route through Robbinsville. Also, I'm working on a video from where Nick and I rode the "Gravel-hala" Skyway, which starts just outside Robbinsville and kind of parallels the Cherohala Skyway. It's also on that SM 500 route. Email me at tennreb63@gmail.com and I can send you that gpx file or pull some road names from that for you. Here's a link to my ride to Murphy and back through Robbinsville. th-cam.com/video/eZ_AkbXnyiw/w-d-xo.html
