  • Join Archie Roach sharing the songs and stories behind his multi award winning 1990 debut album Charcoal Lane. In Ep 16 Archie talks about his song, Munjana, inspired by Beverley Whyman, the mother of Russell Moore, who was taken from Beverley as a baby, adopted out and taken over to America. He ended up fending for himself on the streets of Florida, had no knowledge that he was an indigenous Australian, committed a crime that sees him to this day locked up in the state's penitentiary. After years of searching for her son, Beverley finally found him. She made the journey over to Florida to the prison to reconnect with her baby Russell. Archie wrote Munjana (meaning trouble) for Beverley.

I'm a white Australian who has been living in the US for 20 years..I came across the story of Russel about 18 months ago..I live about 30 mile from where he was incarcerated here in North Florida..I thought a few times that I should try to make contact with him..send him some books about Australia..try to visit him..sadly now I didn't do any of those things..even as a white Australian I still miss Australia..it's part of who I am..I can't begin to imagine how lost and alone Russel must have felt all his life as one of the stolen generation..I just read online that he passed away in June..if only I had been more thoughtful and tried harder to make contact with him..I truly am sad that he never got to see his homeland..the land where he belonged..I pray that his spirit is with his ancestors.

I wasn’t part of the stolen generation but I was taken off of my mother and father when I was 4 . Raised the white mans way. The way my mother doesn’t want me to be. She’s out in Julia Creek doing lore I’m in Brisbane. Raised in Moranbah a mining town. No nothing about my culture but I’m on a journey now. My mother and father started drugs to ease the pain. They fell too far down. They only have pain. I was the oldest. My younger brother and sister were raised by them . My pop who raised me was sent to jail. She and my Dadwas right all along. Being taken Away did more damage to me then it would have being raised by mother’s love.
My mothers love is so strong. She had lost herself though if I was to return now
    We would only argue
One day I’ll go back to home
    To my people
I have mental issues to deal with first.
I guess generational trauma is true, all I’ve ever had and known is anger and pain
    I’m learning to love again
    Thank you Archie roach
My story is not the same as yours
But it carries the same emotions
Each song of yours makes me cry
It reminds me who I am
My mum called me JUSTICE for a reason
I will fight for our land
    And the truth
I will not let them wipe away our culture.
I have a duty on this earth. ❤️🖤💛
Music is how I’m going to change everything
    You are my idol Archie
I was great full to meet you briefly I think last year when there was a link up for the 35 year anniversary. My uncle John was invited because he is my pops long lost brother who was taken to palm island. My pop isn’t a bad person, he just gave into the white mans way growing up and cared more for money then his own family. He is different now that he is out of jail. For the better.
