Vlog Style video for y'all! Enjoy! -- P.S. If you're serious about improving your Spanish, check out my 3 Secrets To Learn Spanish Faster here - speakspanishfaster.com/youtube
Our differences are only a big deal when people make them a big deal. Unfortunately, people default to making a big deal rather than embracing and appreciating differences. If we embrace others, we could actually learn something. Brother I'm glad to know you worked through you language insecurities. Your work has brought this gift to us and I truly appreciate you for it. "Hablo como hablo" ¡Me encanta!
On my Puerto Rican side of the family they talk about that all the time where when you speak Spanish they can tell that you're not from the island. It's a common thing
I’m just me too 😅 My Spanish accent doesn’t define me. I can’t master the Puerto Rican accent, so I try to just speak as properly as I can. Understanding the accent is more important to me. Some Spanish speakers from other countries say I sound like a professor 😭 I guess that’s good since I’m told by English speakers that I speak very formally and proper (it’s just how I grew up as a native English speaker I guess 🤷🏾♀️)
I enjoyed this video! I’m African American and Spanish is my favorite language. I’ve loved it since I was a little girl so I’ve been studying it for some time. Mi cuñado is Mexican so I’ve learned even more Spanish from being around my sister’s in-laws. Not only that, but I live in the heart of Pilsen which is a Mexican community in Chicago. I would say that I’m accepted in this community. I have been asked if I’m Dominican because of my accent. I have adjusted to Mexican Spanish well, but I would like to learn the dialects of other countries as well.
What a fascinating discussion! I am very happy and grateful to have found this channel to help me learn Spanish on a deeper level than rote memorization. It is also much more personal, friendly, and fun! The shorts, alone, are worth their weight in gold, offering quick little bites of practice or nuggets of information. Thank you so much for helping us learn Spanish in an entertaining and very effective way! ❤
My second generation Mexican friends in America get criticized and made fun of for how they speak Spanish when visiting family in Mexico. Your way of teaching is so refreshing and real! Puerto Rican and Mexican music is different too. I would like to know Spanish just hear what is being expressed. Love of course! Thank you.
It was so helpful! I grew up with PR parents that spoke to me in English and Spanish but predominantly English. I'm the oldest sibling so as my parents had more children it kind of went to straight English. My Spanish is intermediate but I only know the PR accent so I pronounce words as such when I speak. But I work with 2 girls from Ecuador who speak no English, when I speak to them I speak very proper (enunciating my "s" and "r") because I don't want to mess up! Which I do (a lot) and they help me finish my sentence if I can't think of the word. I also help them learn English words too. It's a win win!
Been going at it for almost two years now.. I can read, and comprehend well/ok. I am terrified to speak. There was a lot of things you said that really encouraged me to keep going. thanks for the videos.
Gracias. So happy to have found your site. Trying to learn Spanish, German and French. Most appreciative to have you for Spanish now, and have a suitable teacher for German....still looking for a French mentor.
Rocky has the Dominican twang and the boricua twang, too! I totally hear it. Sort of related, what I notice a lot with bilingual people who grow up with both languages is that the accents and languages blend. Or sometimes, one accent predominates the other. My kid, for example, is catching a strong Spanish accent with his English, but learns it only from his Texas daddy. He prefers the Spanish, but speaks both. We are doing the split learning technique. I think accents are truly arbitrary, but I would like to dive more into this. There's a funny video online of one of the former presidents of Spain catching accents based on the places he visits, and it's hysterical 😅 He's totally unaware of it, too. Anyway, keep up the good content. Great stuff! 🇵🇷🙏🇵🇷¡Wepa!
i'm learning and i'm at still what i feel is very basic level, but i've hit the point where, say, on an online game i can go for a few minutes without having to stop and ask for clarification or not need to stop to think of a word, and people have started guessing where i'm from based on accent or vocab. it's always funny and gratifying when they ask me if i'm mexican or spanish or colombian, real evidence of the influence of my friends. my spanish is a frankenstein mishmash and i'm happy with that! every bit of out of very niche vocab or quirk of accent is a mark of time spent with cool people.
I love your videos and your attitude especially!! I can't believe that you get everything! It's so helpful to learn from you! The embarrassment of making mistakes holds me back. (which is crazy!) I always find some people are kinder, and others call you out on it right in front of other people. (act like they don't understand) I think women are difficult. Sometimes it feels like I have to prove something to be worthy of speaking in their language. That's troubling for me because I've always wanted to fit in! And I work hard for that! I am an ESL teacher so that makes no sense to me. So I appreciate your humor and insight! When my Mexican family (thru marriage) or my Russian relatives make mistakes in English it doesn't bother them. They just talk! I think that "fear" or perfection thing is in some of us too! That's how they tell where we're born! Your accent is so perfect. I'm sure there's many people who can't guess where you're from! It's just you think they do! Keep making videos! You're a natural teacher! THANK YOU!!! I'd write in Spanish but then you would know where I'm from !!!
Thank you so very much for this video. I was in a rut about learning Spanish, but then I came across this video. Your videos have been a huge encouragement to keep going and learning. And to make it your own.
This is sooooo helpful. I wish the English captions were bigger!!! You are using a lot of good phrases and I can’t follow fast enough. I am in NYC to me you sound like you are Puerto Rican with your Rs and Ls. Dominicans I work with them And they have a different music to their accent! But in NYC Your Spanish is all I hear
This is great Bro. I’m learning Colombian Spanish 😂. My best friend was just here visiting from the US. He speaks Spanish and grew up in New York. His parents are from PR. When my friends here in Bogotá heard him talking they knew he was from PR 😂 funny how that happens. Thanks for your deep dive into this subject.
Oh my gosh thank u so much because i stuggle with this too alot. Also i have a band where they are from different countries too. One from the dominican republic, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, and Puerto rico. They talk about how they know they sound like a mix of different accents. And how it can be really tricky for their family and other people to understand them, Because of them being together all the time for so long. But i love how they sound. And they got to learn about each others different cultures. 🎉🎉🎉😊
Im learning Spanish in Mexico and it sounds soooo different from when I listen to you. I’m trying to pick up the different dialects but it’s muy difícil 😂
I’m learning Guatemalan Spanish. That’s where I’ve learned most of my Spanish. I was in PR last week and people on my trip we’re trying to follow the accent (dropping s’s…) and I was like nah. I’m sticking to what I know.
I was just saying something like this to my friend she corrects me on every little thing in Spanish because I’m horrible with prepositions. Finally I just said I don’t care anymore I’m just going to talk and if it’s wrong it’s wrong as long as you know what I’m trying to say🤷🏾♂️
I can relate to some Puerto Ricans thinking I sound Dominican and Dominicans thinking I sound Puerto Rican. lol For the most part, people see that I speak like a Puerto Rican. I kinda just stopped caring how people think I sound and overtime I started sounding more like a boricua. I don’t claim that or pretend to be that.
Do you say idioma for "language"? Heard you say "lengua". Thought that was tongue. Does it matter if you say idioma or Lengua? I forgot all my Spanish but was almost fluent😔I have a thick southern accent so Spanish sounds weird with my country twang
You can use both to indicate "language." And never feel discouraged over your accent. I think it's wonderful when people want to learn other languages and cultures. 😊
Depends where they're from. Someone who speaks Mexican Spanish will have a slightly different accent from someone who speaks Chilean Spanish when they speak English. Dr Eric Singer is a linguist who works as a therapist and dialect coach has a video on YT where he points out the difference (he's talking about Gus Fring in Breaking Bad).
@@lokienvy here is the thing when I am learning Spanish I am told to try and acquire an accent and I find it strange that native Spanish speakers still have their strong natural accent
@@breakena i mean, it makes you sound more natural and easier to understand if you have a specific accent in Spanish. There is nothing wrong with having a neutral accent, imo, it just sounds jarring to a native speaker. Hard to explain. Like the movie The Expendable, the Hispanic military guy spoke Spanish but it was so weird and stiff, no accent and the wording made him sound like his lines were written in English and put through an electronic translator. You can understand him but it just sounds "off" to Native speakers.
@@breakena No problem. I think that is a matter of personal preference and skill. I would say the accent of the Native Spanish speakers you are closest to? Or the materials you have access to (like shows and podcasts and music). I am Dominican, so if you are in NYC, that might be easy to pick up on because there are lots of us in that area of the USA. If you're in SoCal, a Mexican accent; Florida, Cuban. Europe, Andalusian Spanish. etc etc. But, again, it's all up to you.
Y’all need to stop playing with my guys likes and views ratio😮go head and hit that like button. I’m starting to think they like button took your girlfriend or something because folks really hate him😊

On my Puerto Rican side of the family they talk about that all the time where when you speak Spanish they can tell that you're not from the island. It's a common thing
Love this! I always feel insecure about my accent and trying to fit “in.” Trying to overcome this psychological hurdle!

The only thing that I like about Spanish and motivated me to learn it, is how it sounds beautiful on you and other speakers.
My second generation Mexican friends in America get criticized and made fun of for how they speak Spanish when visiting family in Mexico. Your way of teaching is so refreshing and real! Puerto Rican and Mexican music is different too. I would like to know Spanish just hear what is being expressed. Love of course! Thank you.
I want more videos of you speaking naturally like this, but all in Spanish. It's great listening practice
