I agree. To believe that a farmers harvest or spring rains to seedlings could be less of a good thing than the love you feel for your muse is quite the romantic statement! Sigh..

I saw this when it aired in 1983, I video taped it and have watched it dozens of times over the years. Dick goes on to explain the song in his view is a work of art, working on different levels. It's stayed with me for 30 years; from a young boy to a middle aged man, and never lost an ounce of the weight it carries. It's a superb combination of sublime writing, masterful guitar and understated vocals. This one performance opened up a whole world of Burns song and verse to me, thanks Dick.
At the risk of him thinking me a sentimental fool, when Dick played the Walthamstow folk club last year I asked him to play this for MY "Peggy dear" who couldn't attend with me. He kindly obliged and I will never forget it.
I only discovered Dick Gaughan a couple of weeks ago. So gutted I didn't discover him sooner. This song especially is absolutely sublime. It has so much emotion on so many levels. I cant stop listening to it. Incredible.
Every time I hear this wonderful song I start to cry because this song was played at my pops funeral. This song was one of my beloved pops favourite songs. I love you pop and I always will thank you for what you have done and being part of my life R.I.P
I heard this, for the first time, on radio nan Gaidheal yesterday. Working away in my shed, I had to stop what I was doing, my throat tightened as I listened, by the third verse my eyes had filled.
Jesus, I'm having a Dick Gaughan night, and it just seems to get better and better. Absolutely stunning voice...a throat full of working class gravel, a head full of honesty and integrity and a heart that beats like a shipyard hammer. Keep 'er between the hedges, Dick.
This song got me through a really hard time and took me out of depression. Pure magic.whenever you feel low listen to these lyrics and everything makes sense..x thankyou Robert burns.thankyou dick gaughan and thankyou for posting.x god bless us all.x
Dare I add a thought. So many said already and well. Before this performance, don't we all stand humbled. I see Dick, standing alone, in a field of heather up high in a valley with the ocean viewing at its ending. Skies alive. Singing to life. His perfect voice and brilliant phrasing and pacing; each note all calling all to assemble - listen to the poet and his Singer. Then, off with you to your daily ways.
I saw Dick Gaughan last Friday at a concert in Manchester to raise funds for a film about Michael Davitt. It was great to see him again and he said that this is his favourite song.
Dick Gaughan's definitive rendition of Robert Burns' very best -- a song about autumn and love and life in general. Thanks for Gary West for performing this at the 2014 MSA concert in Tacoma and bringing this beautiful music to my attention.
Saw him last night at the Folk House in Bristol and would have been devastated if he hadn't sung this. My number 1 when I am invited to select my 8 favourites for Desert Island Discs.
Absolutely love this song. Love your accent, Dick. Went out with a Scottish girl a very long time ago - Fiona from Dumfries. She was lovely. What a wonderful voice. Think this song is even better than your great version of song for Ireland. Best wishes now and always. Declan from Dublin
i heard this the first time during a session in a Galway pub. I immediately rushed down to the music shop (sic) to get the album. 30 years have passed and I am still here. Hats off to both Burns and Gaughan, two giants
Dick's interpretation of this song has consistently moved me to tears since I was first introduced to it in the late eighties. Life like love is fleeting - so 'grasp thy waist and fondly prest' before the season turns.
I have listened to this video more than hundred times . The place this fellow takes me calms my heart.:) Thanks so much Dick, Robbie would have been proud.
I've barely ever heard him years ago but from the first note here it is obvious he is a true master of the ballad arts. Fantastic , I will listen to a lot more of his works.
Oh, Thank God (and the poster and TH-cam) this is available to be seen. I listened to a folk music show on WQLN out of Erie back in the early 80s and out of everything I heard, gravitated to Stan Rogers and Dick Gaughan above all others. This guy plays guitar and interprets the Irish music (Handfull of Earth) like no other. Long may he live...and thank you, Dick Gaughan. Your music is still touching lives as it has mine. Cheers, L
I was honored to be his support a while ago.. awesome charisma.. he just got back from touring australia.. on his way back, they broke his guitar :( he quickly had to buy a new one.. man, he was not amused at all ;) but performing just great.. thx God for his voice!
Sadly, I have never had the pleasure of a live performance of Dick Gaughan. Last time I was in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1995, I hung out at the Tron Tavern during my visit. I met a few of my Scots music heroes from The Easy Club, and other bands. I had hoped to find out where Dick was playing locally but was told by his manager, who was there at The Tron, Dick was on tour in the US. Damn, he was scheduled to play in Portland Oregon the night of my return flight. 4:48
I wish I may have done some musing with this fellow some 35 years ago. And playing and singing. I envy every woman he has ever neen in the vicinity of.
only 40 years old . . . I enjoyed him very much in the day - -hope he's still doing well . . . from an exile Highlander . . . in another high land in Munich . .
I'll never tire of saying that this is the greatest love song ever written and this the finest version.
You can keep saying it as far as I'm concerned....

HungryHendry : Thanks , you put it so well.
What a beautiful account, @hungryhendry. I thank you for it. Safe travels!
Understated vocals! Really? Are you listening to the same song - scarcely a single note is undecorated.
At the risk of him thinking me a sentimental fool, when Dick played the Walthamstow folk club last year I asked him to play this for MY "Peggy dear" who couldn't attend with me. He kindly obliged and I will never forget it.
Lovely touch . You must have been in a bliss of revery . May I ask , who is your own Peggy Dear ?
I only discovered Dick Gaughan a couple of weeks ago. So gutted I didn't discover him sooner.

I was listening to this today at 5am walking through Edinburgh ☺
God rest his soul, Dylan. You may enjoy this too. Such a beautify poem. th-cam.com/video/BWuPlKcOqO8/w-d-xo.html
Your POP is with you still ; as long as you remember him , he'll always be by your side .
Your Pop had exquisite taste in music. R.I.P. I honor his memory for loving this song.
A lot of music I used to listen to no longer interests me. This one stays through the years and still touches me deeply. Truly beautiful.
Handful of Earth is one of the greatest albums ever - in any genre. I love it. And my background is predominantly rock, metal and classical.
Thanks for that thought ❤
It’s savage and it’s tender.
I agree.

I had the amazing fortune to hear him sing this in the presence of about 15 people…. I will never forget it.❤
Burns and gaughan combined, it can't get any better than this.
one of the pleasures of life, Dick Gaughan singing this beauty.
When I am invited to go on Desert Island Discs and choose eight records, seven may be lost in the waves but I'd save this one. I love it.
If you did not know Robert Burns was a literary genius you know now. What a great rendition by Dick G.
this brilliant version would have brought a tear to Burns eye.
Surely. Burns wrote such a masterpiece ! He was less than 17 y.o. !
The saut tear would've blint his e'e !
Yes indeed and many more too !
A tear to a glass eye.
Crying now for sure
Burns makes me a proud Ayrshireman. Gaughan a proud Scotsman. What a perfect video.
I begin my day with this song fairly often ask I wake up in a different place each morning as an OTR truck driver... so peaceful... thank you Dick...
Still one of the greatest musical folk renditions of all time, of the superlative lyrics of Robert Burns.
