Still the gold standard for stories about the Seattle Pilots is Jim Bouton's Ball Four. All the day-to-day drama of an MLB team, complete with all the funny stories you could ask for.
I watched this video about 5 months ago and decided to come back to it and leave a comment. It is always great looking at these vintage sets but when a 1970 comes up I view it immediately. This was my first year of collecting at 10 years old. It became my first completed vintage set in the 1990's. Thanks for posting this one 7 months ago.
Thank you for taking the time to review and go through this excellent set. Enjoyed it. I also am collecting this set. Probably about 90% done. Unfortunately, though, I still need some high dollar cards (Nolan Ryan, Bench, Aaron, etc). But I'll complete it eventually. By the way, I'm with you (...and also in the minority). I like the look/design of the '70 set.
1970 is when I began buying baseball cards when I was 11 years old. I still have the complete set. The Mets won the World series in 1969 and the set reflects that championship team. I've been a Mets fan ever since. I also bought a lot of 71 and 72 cards too. I regret not buying more when they were so cheap.
Those definitely are the best 3 years of the 70's for vintage cards. Thank you so much for the comment. That's a great story with how you became a Mets fan.
I also have completed the 1970 set, it took me a few years to finish, some of the cards were expensive, it is one of my favorite designs topps ever did, although to some it may seem plain, but I love it
I agree with you. I love the simplicity of the design, and it really presents well when the entire set is together. Some of the high series cards are expenses, especially the Nolan Ryan.
How awesome is that set.Congrats man. I completed it about 1 year ago. High numbers are pricey. The Seattle Pilots team card is tough !!! Thx for sharing
Tons of FUN facts on the 1970's Topps set. I believe I was paying 25 cents a pack as a kid. I'd go to my local 7-Eleven, buy a couple of packs, buy 49 cent super big gulp, stick a few quarters into the Tron arcade machine and then call it a day!
Cool idea for videos! I used to have complete Topps sets from 1968 through 1995, in addition to a complete 1960 Topps and a 1963 Fleer. However, I broke up the sets up to 1981 in the early 2000's except for my 1960 (year I was born), 1971 (first year I collected cards), and 1979 (year I got back into collecting after more or less stopping in high school) sets. These sets are also years that the Pirates won championships so, as a Pirates fan, I felt a need to hold onto them a little more.
I can understand the temptation to break them up. I have felt it too. I really enjoy having it all together. Thank you for the comment; it’s appreciated.
I love those 1970 cards! I was excited when I ordered a 500 card box of vintage cards and when all my 1970 cards were heritage,I was very disappointied!🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒
Another nice video. Yes, I watched it all the way through. I am currently putting together this set, and I like the clean design. There is plenty to like about the 1970 set. No debate: the Ryan is the most expensive - at least it was for me.
They doubled the price, but also doubled the cards. I distinctly remember that being a big deal amongst us little kids. You got 10 cards for 10 cents instead of 5 for 5 cents. I guess Topps did save money on bubblegum that way since they only had to give half as much gum per card. This is the first set where I have a lot of my original cards. I bought cards in 68 & 69 but they all disappeared. I was 8-9 years old at the time and I think I spent whatever money I ever got on baseball cards. I have a shoe box full of my originals and you can imagine what condition they're in. Wanting to get the complete set, I bought it in 1975 for 40 dollars, so those are in good condition but definitely not gem mint. I think one distinction the 1970 set has is not a good one if you're into rookies. I don't think there's a single HOF rookie card in the whole set. The top rookies are probably guys like Thurman Munson & Vida Blue. So maybe a good set for someone who can't spend thousands of dollars on a card because there might be none in the whole set.
Great first hand account of being a collector when this set was released. I loved reading every word of your response. I agree that this would be a good set to start with for a vintage collector. High grades are still expensive, but no big rookies as you indicated. I love hearing from you, so thank you!
Great looking set....for some reason I have 1 card from this set and it's a Willie Stargell....but not real creative with the poses that year from Topps....they all look similar...batters and pitchers....oh I used to have the Ryan card too but sold it long ago when his cards were ridiculous in around '89.
@@whitesoxfancardcollector I don't remember...i DO remember buying a Ryan Rookie around that time for 300 and turning it the same day for 500....prob grade a 8 or so today...same condition on the '71 i just cant recall what i sold that one for....love the content.
Thank you; I appreciated it. His cards are crazy again, I’m happy I got his key cards while the market was down. Vintage set building has gotten expensive in the last 3 years after being rather affordable for years.
fantastic; the set really looks great when put together. The silver boarders really work when you see it with other cards from the same set. Good luck!
@@mikekeeler6362 it was a wonderful time! 360 cards for $3.60! I love Topps heritage and wish Topps would go back to the old card stock. Also love action shots, but would love to have a few portraits thrown in here and there.

Completely agree with you!
That's a great book I'm from Seattle so it's nice to read about Seattle's shaky history with pro baseball

I so appreciate these comments and stories. I’m happy you and others enjoy it. I certainly appreciated the journey of completing it in 2008.
I’ve always liked 1970 Topps baseball cards. Enjoyed seeing your set.
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching!

It’s a great set. I love the early cards of Ryan and Bench without breaking the bank. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.

Thanks for watching Scott! It definitely has its flaws, but I love its simplicity.

Oh wow; that’s very different. That’s a bummer.

I was eleven tears old, when I opened that wax pack, I was in shock of the ugliness of its grey color. I didn't buy that many baseball cards in 1970.
I could see that; it was a really polarizing set.
Curt Flood Phillies card! Did not know that card existed. I’m currently working on the same set

I was 13 years old in 1970 and about the change in price from 5 cents to 10 cents I don't think any kids thought about that
