  • In another video ( • The Colour Dodge Sketc... ) we show how to use a blur and Colour Dodge Blend Mode to create a 'pencil sketch' effect. This finds edges and creates a dark area on the darker side of the edge. Now we take the same process and use a Colour Burn Blend Mode to highlight the lighter side of edges. This can then be used in combination with the Colour Burn method to achieve a full two-sided combination sharpening effect.
Tip 1: If you want to increase the brightness of the white edge lines created, add a Levels adjustment above the Invert/Blur group and adjust White Level.
Tip 2: If there is unwanted noise, for example after using Tip 1, add a Noise Reduction filter layer just above the Invert/Blur group.
Tip 3: You can also convert the white lines to black lines with an Invert adjustment. Put this above the adjustments from Tip 1 and Tip 2, and above the Invert/Blur group.
Tip 4: If there are burned out (fully saturated white) areas in the original image, this can appear in the final layer. To turn down such glaring whites, go to the HSL applied to the original image and turn down Luminosity.
