    I always find low contrast photos hard to select also,I have found that using the lasso tool with the magnetic setting in some cases works better.By adjusting the contrast setting you can make a better selection.

    Do you ever find that along with the outer selection, you end up with little extra selections in the middle of the object? I do, and I'm never sure why, or how to get rid of them.

      Yes, sometimes areas can get missed. A check afterwards (eg a temporary flood fill or delete) can help see these.
