"Rome had responsible slaveowners and treated their slaves fairly" Yeah Davis uh huh that's why a murdered slaveowner would result in the execution of the entire slave house regardless of who was guilty
Also "treated their slaves fairly" is kinda oxymoronic to me. You cannot treat a slave fairly, because they are a slave, and are inherently treated as lesser than a non-slave.
Seneca literally had to beg people to treat their slaves like fellow humans. Everything beyond that would've been too radical and something that wouldn't be accepted.

I don't understand that argument because since the dawn of civilization, people have had to work to make a living, maintain a household and family. I'd argue it was worse in some periods of history than others.
@@darkprince56 But we live in an advanced society (well, most of us). We have the power to implement UBI such that no one has to do a job to survive - they'll do jobs because they enjoy them. And that's what's making modern people unhappy - the fact that it could be so much better.
@@darkprince56 sure, but humans didn't really do much evolving in civilization, it was all pre farming. They're actually dangerously close to a good take with that one. Society is sadder now because women (in nuclear families) have to work outside of the home just like their husbands. Capitalists appropriated feminism to justify making both parents (in a nuclear family) work full-time outside of the home instead of just one. The actual thing feminists wanted being, of course, that either the husband or the wife could be the one with a day job. Agustin Simoncelli to be fair tho a lot of Jews became agnostic with the Holocaust and besides that, the religion has a sort of ‘questionability’ that Christianity doesn’t have imo. At school the teacher was teaching us about businesses. I was excited because my father owned a company which I wanted to take over one day. Then the teacher brought up worker co-ops. I immediately began to get nervous. The teacher singled me out and asked "what's your opinion on worker co-ops" Should I lie? Should I tell her what she wants to hear? No. I mustered up all the courage I could and said "Um I don't think worker co-ops would work. It doesn't make sense for every janitor and waitress to be making important decisions. Also it undermines the important work and innovations great men like my father do." "Oh..." The teacher looked shocked. The atmosphere of the room completely changed. Everyone in the class gave me dirty looks. Should I have lied? On the bus ride home I kept hearing people talk about me behind my back. Saying I'm not a comrade and my father is a capitalist pig. Then a group of students assaulted me on the bus. They stole all my money to "reclaim the value of their parents labour". I screamed out to the bus driver for help. As the bus driver turned around to see what was going on I got a look at his face. It was Karl Marx. "Don't worry", he exclaimed menacingly. "You won't be needing money where we're going." I looked out the windows and saw the bus drive passed my house. "Wait!" I yelled. "You passed my house". I looked out the window again and my heart sunk. There was a sign with an arrow pointing forward that read "GULAG this way" I looked down at my hands and noticed I was in hand cuffs. In a panic I glanced around and realized everyone else was also in chains. Then I noticed who the other passengers on the bus were. Jeff Bezos, Martin Shkreli, Elon Musk. They were all great intelligent men who have been stripped of their humility, integrity and wealth. Then I noticed something I wish I hadn't. I looked at the man sitting next to Mike Bloomberg. It was my father. He was curled up in a ball, muttering to himself about some sociologist that convinced him that worker co-ops were a superior business model. "I never should have believed him" he cried. "Sociology isn't a real science. All the studies he showed me came from San Francisco. Everyone knows San Francisco is a leftist city. What was I thinking" Tears began to well up in my eyes. I looked out my window again and saw Vaush hanging on the edge of the bus. As soon as we made eye contact I knew it was too late. He smashed through the window and started aggressively offering me puberty blockers. I kept saying I didn't want them and that I was too young to make that kind of decision but he wouldn't listen and tried to force feed as I screamed for help. I woke up in a cold sweat. It was all a dream. My father ran into my room and asked if I was okay. "Dad?" I asked nervously. "Yes honey?" He responded with a worried gaze. "Would you ever think of turning your business into a worker cooperative?" I asked. He laughed. "Is that what this is all about? Don't worry. That would never happen. Even if I thought one of my workers was planning on running a union or was asking to compare wages with other workers, I would fire them on the spot." I immediately felt a sense of relief come over me. Then I went back to bed and slept like a baby. God bless capitalism.
Pretty sure Marx was born in and lived in "The West" his entire life so any values he would espouse technically and literally are "Western Values". These people are absolute cabbages.
the right, who complain about the left supposedly redefining language to suit their needs, have made an industry out of defining Western culture and history as "whatever we, the right, are in favor of." Adam Smith is a Western philosopher, Karl Marx is not. Why? "Shut up, commie," that's why. You see something similar to this in America, in particular, where the Republican Party has decided that they unilaterally own the concept of patriotism. I've had a Republican tell me that his patriotism as a guy who's sole civic "virtue" in his life has been voting Republican, is more valid than the patriotism of a combat wounded Green Beret because that Green Beret supports Colin Kaepernick's right to kneel. How does that figure? You tell me! Maybe right wing parties in Europe also do this...
@@dkroll92What’s more, that bit about Republicans taking sole ownership of patriotism extends to the American flag itself, at least in residential terms. An American flag hung out front of someone’s house has become a signal for right wing views and loyalty more than actual patriotism. Or at the very least they’ve tainted the flag’s image enough for that to seem like a safe assumption. Which in turn gives more sensible people pause about decorating with the flag themselves.
The irony is that conservatives who claim to want to go back to the 50s when women could choose to stay at home would vehemently oppose any kind of economic model that would allow the average man to support a family on a single income. You know in this 'golden age' taxes on the rich were as high as 90% and we had massive public infrastructure projects right?
Liam J As well as strong unions that actually protected workers, a Republican president say that anyone who's against the New Deal reforms should be automatically disqualified from government, an old Democratic president said it's unAmerican to profit from war, and America still viewed any Nazi as a traitor.
Wrong! The state shrank in the 1950s - when compared to previous eras. This was mostly because of war spending and 1930s demand management policies - which required major state action and spending. Yes there were 1950s infrastructure projects as part of rebuilding - even USA which was not invaded or bombed needed such work - as things had been neglected. The trend was for less tax and spend in the 1950s. That is the measure we have to go by. If you have another measure - such as one you made up or one you feel must or could be true - please tell us how you came by this model? Also, states grew in the Reagen-Thatcher era of supposed Neo-Liberalism. When taken as a whole, the tax and spend of a nation like the UK grew during the era of 'scaling back'. Tax and spend was 38p in the £ when Thatcher became PM. 11 yrs later it was nearly 42p in the £ - despite massive global boom, oil revenues and revenues from sell-offs. Facts are what you should deal in, not suppositions or reflections on the dominant narrative. This skews the myths of left and right.
mudpuddlestruck bylightning The state shrank in the 50s? As soon as WW2 finished, we were already in a Cold War with the Soviet Union. McCarthyism, spying and espionage are huge expanses the state made, no? Also, as Eisenhower said (who was president most of the decade), the military industrial complex was growing, which made the state prioritize military expenditure over domestic spending. You also have to consider the fact that the state had a far bigger say in the economy than today. And do you want to know how our model works? Simple. You pay for your society's expenses through taxation. You pay taxes or else you get nothing from us. Also, the neoconservativism of the Reagan-Thatcher Era was based on the belief that anything that can be privatized should be, including industries that are inherently unprofitable. This led to monopolies growing and they could charge whatever they wanted. Also, something you left out is that before 1980, around the time neoconservativism took over, wages grew with productivity. In 1980, productivity continues to increase just as it had done before, but wages stagnate. You know how people in America are demanding a $15 living wage? If wages didn't stagnate, they could be upwards of $20 an hour. Also, taxes wouldn't be too much of a problem as money loses value due to inflation, among other factors, if people were getting paid enough to pay these taxes. And when leftists talk about raising taxes, they mean on the rich. When conservatives raise taxes, they cut them for the rich and increase them for the poor. Two prime examples were Thatcher's poll tax and Cameron's bedroom tax.
Oh do read the figures. They are not the only story - but they should be the foundation of your conclusion. Both left and right are stuck in their narratives. This is only important for in-group identity and personal identification with a set of ideas. Reality exists independent of these things. You may learn that when your balls finally drop. Btw Ike was right. What of it? Thatcher was wrong. What of it? The state grew exponentially under Thatcher. Tax and spend up, central power up. Does that not challenge your narrative? Does that not give you pause for thought? Ike provided the most experienced voice on military policy and history paradigms, in relation to growth of state power on the back of experts - not some lefty windbag paranoiac. Does that not challenge your narrative? No, thought not. Stick to narratives and try to keep them separate from evidence and reality. It's safer that way. I ke good, Maggie bad is even too crude. Take the long view and try to be as dispassionate as you can.

+Doom2Guy After hearing multiple responses from antigay people, I have narrowed it down to two possible reasons: 1) Traditionalism. The traditional nuclear family is a man, a woman, and at least one child. Humans cannot have children unless a man inseminates a woman. Since a homosexual couple cannot have children without artificial intervention, they must be against families because, in their minds, only straight couples with children can be considered a family. This argument focuses more on maintaining traditional social norms than actually hating gay people. 2) Homophobia. Fear can be a very useful response when it comes to dealing with possible threats or dangers. Phobias, on the other hand, are harmful because they take fear to extremes and are, by definition, completely irrational. People can develop phobias for basically anything. Hell, I was arachnophobic until a couple years ago. Usually phobias form due to bad experiences involving the source of fear, or the phobia develops after hearing incredibly negative things about the source. Once a homophobe develops their fear of gays, they will use just about any reason they can think of to justify their fear. One thought I constantly had that reinforced my arachnophobia was that I thought that spiders moved in a disgusting way. For homophobes, the "destruction of the family" is just one of many justifications. There are more reasons than just those two, but the ones I listed stick out the most to me. Of course I don't mean to argue for their homophobia, I'm just listing a couple of their reasons.
+Doom2Guy How does it not make sense? Leftist are making gay propaganda to convince me, a straight male, to leave my family to pursue hot, passionate sex with as many men as possible. If I didn't worship a romanticized concept of masculinity, I'd be a homosexual.
+Doom2Guy "Equallity for homosexuals" is just a front for the state's centralization of power. As it must be obvious to you, gay people can't biologically reproduce with each other, so this is being used as an excuse for every baby that is born to be by default owned by the state. In Scotland already, there's plans for a state guardian to monitor each children individually.

It's generally best to take it for granted that literally every single thing Davis Aurini says about Rome is wildly incorrect. Like that time he implied feminism and "decadent sluts" caused the Fall of Rome (despite just how shit things had gotten for women by the time Rome fell).
Romans slaveowners generally treated their slaves well, so well that they had to fight three servile wars to stop their slaves from uprising and killing their masters.

13:14 "50 years ago they could choose whether or not they wanted to work or stay at home, now they all have to work." I mean, I'm pretty sure austerity politics and low wages are to blame for this, not feminism.
They had to choose whether to have a career or family, working mother was not a common thing. My grandmother said women were expected to quit when they got pregnant. And when they did work, they were not paid as well as men.
Some slaves, in history, have been treated well. Just by definition. The word itself varies widely, and a lot of what history would cause slaves can mean either of the forced work, labor until death, unpaid and mistreated kind, or a more civilized sort of indentured servitude. Some civilizations even basically had what would resemble modern internships, with even foreign and even criminal prisoners being worked until they had earned their right to citizenship--at which point they would be released, and even sometimes giving land or property. Usually that's not what people are talking about though. There's a reason we have different terms for different kinds of forced or captured work, and unfortunately a lot of slaves in history of all kinds were just not permitted to keep journals or notes, if they could even read or write.
@@paris5410 But they can tho. Saying "they can't quit a job because they need the money" ignores the fact that they could pretty easily find a better job before quitting, whereas a slave couldn't shop around for a master that didn't abuse them.

But... But culture is supposed to change. Cultures are formed via a sharing of ideals. This monolithic 'western culture' the fascists talk about doesn't even exist. It's a collection of different cultures based off of Roman and middle eastern ideals. And even then, some 'western culture doesn't even borrow from there, either. Multiculturalism is basically how culture is formed.

"Women are more misrable now compared to 50 years ago". Have you ever uh... talked to an actual woman who is above the age of 50 about what her perspective on that is? Because if you had, you would know that that isn't true for the majority of women out there. Things were worse back then for BOTH men and women.
"Things were worse back then for BOTH men and women." the idea is that things were "worse" but women were happier therefore things weren't actually worse for women. the idea is kind of that feminism is looking at women's happiness trough a male lens and i think thats a reasonable complaint to have against feminism. "Have you ever uh... talked to an actual woman who is above the age of 50 about what her perspective on that is? Because if you had, you would know that that isn't true for the majority of women out there." no...talking to one woman would be a trivial amount of data so you would have no clue of what the majority of women experienced. And that is assuming that the woman is telling the absolute truth about her emotional state 50 years in the past which would require an insane level of honesty,self-awareness and memory that most people don't have. also comparing women that were Xyears old in Y year to women that are X years old in Z year is a better strategy if you are trying to look at the effects of the world on said women. comparing women that were Xyears old in Y year to women that are U year old in Z year is just introducing a new factor about the effects of age on happiness.
Women might have been happier 50 years ago because they were younger and had less to worry about. (If you ask the same groups of women). If you ask women today, whether they are happy, look at the housing market, negative media bombarding you every day, and miserable income, while you work your ass off. Considering all those things, yes, they might have been happier 50 years ago. Plus from what I understand, America in 50-60's had better social system in place, rich paid shit-ton of taxes etc. There is a lifestyle to consider, not 'women in relation to men' what these altrighters are trying to make you think...
"They are trying to change culture." That is literally how culture works. It constantly changes. Every single piece of culture they love exists because culture changed from something else. It's a "not even trying" explanation of things. You can just use it to point at anything you like and call it your culture, and anything you hate and claim it's a conspiracy. Plus they don't even understand the things they think they like. These are people who are struggling in a world that is constantly changing because they cannot keep up, because the version of the world they spent so long thinking they lived in didn't even exist.
It's simpler than that. They are politically motivated actors that don't care about the truth so they just say whatever they think will give them more power. Whether or not they honestly believe in the shit they say doesn't matter.

I feel like these guys saying death of a culture have played waaaay too much Civ. A culture isn't fighting against another culture and losing, it's a melding of cultures. I've always suspected that's the reason why Americans are so extremely paranoid and fearful of being invaded considering we're the safest country on the face of the earth and have invaded many many other nations but it's never happened to us yet so we're deep down terrified it might. That would explain why all of our science fiction from the 50s like invasion of the bodysnatchers and other films about invasions are so scary to us. Like how in Japan their entire sci-fi industry was basically built around the fear of natural disasters and man made disasters like Godzilla being a metaphor for nuclear weapons and hurricanes which is why he sometimes helps them but sometimes decides to randomly rampage.
I love Civ but it has really distorted derpshits' understanding of history. Technology isn't linear, culture isn't a competition, and not everything is possible in every part of the world due to whatever resources are nearby. Sedim Entari You know instead of blaming change on Jews, they could actually discuss how these changes have come about. For instance the decline of religion has removed the stigma of divorce and premarital sex. The technological changes that happened in merely 200 years is astounding. They seem to be unable to comprehend these vast changes, and seem to simplify and blame these changes on the ‘da Jews.’

@@darkprince56 But we live in an advanced society (well, most of us).
We have the power to implement UBI such that no one has to do a job to survive - they'll do jobs because they enjoy them.

@@darkprince56 sure, but humans didn't really do much evolving in civilization, it was all pre farming. There was certainly hard work that was done but no where near the same amount that we do on a day to day basis (by hard work, I mean mental was well as physical).

It's even better when you cite his entire sentence: "Criticizing someone for what they say isn't trying to take away their free speech--it IS free speech."
TH-cam should put this on a rainbow-colored banner across the top of their page.
When you _use_ that criticism to coerce that person into silence, then _yes,_ it absolutely is an attempt to infringe of their free speech.
If _"criticizing someone for what they said"_ includes trying to get them kicked off TH-cam, or PayPal, then you are attempting to coerce that person into silence, and in effect, trying to take away their freedom of speech.
You don't get bonus points just because you didn't use the government to do it.
@@nietzschesmoustache3585 Criticism does not silence anyone. Their right to air their views isn't being taken away. What do you mean "bonus points"? That's what free speech is. The government can't regulate what you say. That's all it means.

I hate this whole, "Destroy the traditional family unit" thing. I had a traditional family. My dad unknowingly psychologically abused me and is trying his hardest to repair his relationship with me, my mum divorced him and started her own successful business, and my brother had severe autism which was made worse every time my parents attempted to fit into the norm. It wasn't until the divorce and them straying from traditional norms and the "Family unit" that my brother started to get better, my mum started to explore her own personality, and my dad started to change and become substantially better.
These are the same people who complain about girls these days having daddy issues, yet they clearly either have severe repressed parental issues themselves and are blaming marxism on it, or have no ability to put themselves in the shoes of others and understand their mould doesn't apply to everyone.
that's horrible, and yea this whole traditional family talk is bs, I have friends with more than two parents or with two parents of the same gender and they weren't obviously negatively affected by being brought up in a non conventional family. this is just conservatives hating people and masking their hate with "oh I'm just concerned with the children's well-being, I'm totally not a misogynist racist homophobe"

Also it undermines the important work and innovations great men like my father do."
"Oh..." The teacher looked shocked.
What was I thinking"
Tears began to well up in my eyes.
Even if I thought one of my workers was planning on running a union or was asking to compare wages with other workers, I would fire them on the spot."
I immediately felt a sense of relief come over me. Then I went back to bed and slept like a baby. God bless capitalism.

Pretty sure Marx was born in and lived in "The West" his entire life so any values he would espouse technically and literally are "Western Values". These people are absolute cabbages.
Very true, he was also influenced by Hegel who was a very western philosopher
the right, who complain about the left supposedly redefining language to suit their needs, have made an industry out of defining Western culture and history as "whatever we, the right, are in favor of." Adam Smith is a Western philosopher, Karl Marx is not.

Why do homophobes keep saying that gay people are against family? It doesn't make any sense to me
+Doom2Guy After hearing multiple responses from antigay people, I have narrowed it down to two possible reasons:
1) Traditionalism.

They had to choose whether to have a career or family, working mother was not a common thing. My grandmother said women were expected to quit when they got pregnant. And when they did work, they were not paid as well as men.
Slaves were treated good? That's like saying that torture victims were treated well lol.
thats because you have a very recent understanding of slavery. its more like saying that target treats its employees well.
DIVAD291 no slavery has always sucked. Target pays its employees and they can quit when they want to.
@Patty Walker They can quit when they want to? No, they cannot quit a job that's paying their bills. Otherwise they might starve.

"Women are more misrable now compared to 50 years ago". Have you ever uh... talked to an actual woman who is above the age of 50 about what her perspective on that is? Because if you had, you would know that that isn't true for the majority of women out there. Things were worse back then for BOTH men and women.
"Things were worse back then for BOTH men and women."
the idea is that things were "worse" but women were happier therefore things weren't actually worse for women. the idea is kind of that feminism is looking at women's happiness trough a male lens and i think thats a reasonable complaint to have against feminism.
"Have you ever uh... talked to an actual woman who is above the age of 50 about what her perspective on that is? Because if you had, you would know that that isn't true for the majority of women out there."
no...talking to one woman would be a trivial amount of data so you would have no clue of what the majority of women experienced.
"They are trying to change culture."
That is literally how culture works.

@@davetyler6520 Native American's were LITERALLY KILLED IN A GENOCIDE. That's not what brown people are doing in America, they're not killing off the entire population of white people to literally take over all of our jobs. . It does make we wonder if people who make these arguments really are afraid of Hispanics and blacks because they think they'll do to us as we did to them.
@@davetyler6520 Manifest destiny was not a melding of cultures brah
I love Civ but it has really distorted derpshits' understanding of history. Technology isn't linear, culture isn't a competition, and not everything is possible in every part of the world due to whatever resources are nearby.
Native Americans discovered crop rotation and terraforming hundreds (maybe even thousands) of years before they would be rediscovered by Europeans and their descendants in the United States. You know instead of blaming change on Jews, they could actually discuss how these changes have come about.
For instance the decline of religion has removed the stigma of divorce and premarital sex.
Lower mortality rates due to advancement of Medicine means people have less children because they know the ones they do have will have survive
Birth control meant women are better able to control their fertility, which makes them free to search for jobs.
The technological changes that happened in merely 200 years is astounding. They seem to be unable to comprehend these vast changes, and seem to simplify and blame these changes on the ‘da Jews.’
