I’ve had plots for getting on 30 years and each year brings a different challenge. It’s what helps us grow in experience as gardeners. Ultimately it all goes round and round and you just accept it. Next year will be different ❤️❤️
Thanks for that spirit lifting bit at the end, Emma, it really helped to keep me on track. Plus, to show pictures of your pretty pond, really showed that there’s more than just veg on a Plot, that can bring you joy.

For fun we are growing a Tiny Tim tomato plant indoors to see how it does and if it produces and fruit. If there are food shortages I am making a lettuce bed indoors too.
I like where you planted the borage. It will be pretty when the blue flowers are in bloom. Do you know in the US growing zone that London is also in, were having identical weather as you? Lots of rain, cold windy spring, plants not growing & an overabundance of slugs & snails. Seems to be worldwide.

All of my pumpkins apart from one have been munched 😢. On the other hand, my peas are doing really well for the first time ever! You’ve just got to celebrate any positives!
If you look in nature everything is packed together. I've got oak and hedgegrows and wild flower round the side of my plot. It goes mad and I do have to strim it back in order to prevent it from taking over my plot. I took note of the way everything was jammed together and fashioned my allotment around it. 😊
Always stay positive 😊 Your plot is looking great Emma. I never see any of your neighbours on their plots. You must be on your own a lot there. You need a chair and a cuppa to sit and enjoy your plot. Haven’t seen Rocky the cat for ages.

I planted out some romanesco and parsnips that I bought from the garden centre and 4 days after planting they are still alive, I am so surprised. It must be that there's been little rain so the slugs have been calm. I am over the moon. So far really only corn and radish were surviving
After seeing borage in your first garden plot I was fascinated by them and ordered packet of blue and another packet of white. The blue is definitely my favorite so, a big thanks for introducing me to this beautiful plant.
We have major slug issues here in Wales. I put most of my pumpkins out a couple of days ago and even though its been cold to me, they started flowering...shock!!!
I love your attitude... "just whack more stuff in" . That is kind of my motto...low stress gardening. I have my perennial stuff like raspberries & blackberries which are minimal effort but I battle squirrels and snails over strawberries here in Canada and always have issues with cucumber beetles, vine borers and mildew with cucumbers and squash. Its still early so I continue to direct sow or throw seeds in pots for zucchini/squash/cukes in case they get eaten or diseased (I probably should give up on them but I never learn). I probably have too many back ups now but seeds are cheap. I don't care too much as long as I get a decent amount of raspberries for baking/freezing and enough delicious heirloom tomatoes and hot peppers to eat fresh and make some jam/relish. Anything else is a bonus. Every year I try something new...daikon was new this year and a failure..got too hot and went to flower so something else going in there soon. Got a cherry and peach tree a few years ago and only the birds have enjoyed them so far (we sampled 0 cherries but got a couple peaches last year ) so netted half the peach tree so might get some peaches this year...fingers crossed. I wanted to totally net the tree but it grew huge this spring after it flowered so the net we ordered wouldn't cover the whole tree unfortunately. I will just keep on trying stuff. If it's a total fail, I have a saw😅.
The weather has been awful this year Emma, a good lot of my seeds never germinated & it is hail here in Aberdeen today 😧
Beans are nitrogen fixers like that they're good for the "greedy" pumkins. The best would be to grow corn 🌽 along with them as well. It worked one year in my garden and I had a great harvest but the following year I didn't manage to grow corn 🌽 at the right time so that beans and pumpkins can climb up on them.
We are not alone for sure 🐌!!!
I’m convinced I’m trying to grow new variety of carrots 🥕 ‘invisible’ and I have a magic variety of mangetout and cornflower ‘vanishing’ 😂
Lovely video Emma and a lot of wise words too. However, the slugs have had my strawberries, potatoes and courgettes!!! I did see something on Instagram about laying cucumber out for them so I might try that round my remaining plants as we all have a manky bit of cucumber left in the fridge! I won’t be defeated!!!
Love the pep talk at the end, I think that will resonate with a lot of people. Personally, I haven't written this year off yet. My money's on us having a nice long heatwave in the autumn, everything is going to catch up and we'll be laughing about how bad we thought it was going in the spring. The annual plants may not be doing much at the moment but they're storing energy, waiting for the moment that it warms up and they can grow like a rocket and produce a fruit.
The bloomin slugs have got 95% of my onions at the allotment - little devils!

You could plant your beans on the inside of your archway. That’ll give each plant a bit more space.
Borage is lovely, it’s a relative of comfrey and you can make a liquid fertiliser with the leaves.

Another good day on your allotment. Have you tried oats aroundyour plants to deter slugs & snails ???
I have had an allotment for over 20 years and this year is the first time ever tomato seedlings were attacked by slugs,I didnt know they ate them until now I was planting peas out ,quite established plants and as I was going along the row attaching them to the net support a blooming slug got on one straight away 😳 all my pak chi and brassica plants were mullered overnight..so I am resigned to just not getting the crops I had hoped for.As you say it no good stressing just keep going and just know it will be Ok just different than you'd planned.I do enjoy your videos and if I start to feel a bit tense over the plot I say"what would Emma do" and that grounds me immediately.I intend to enjoy my plot no matter what.I too got Blue Borage seeds after seeing yours and have managed to raise 4 small plants.Thanks for keeping us entertained.
My soil is very free draining and I don’t get many slugs/snails (thankfully) but hot summers are a nightmare. Watering the garden is so time consuming and never as good as a dose of cooling rain, it’s so lovely to see the plants perk up after a shower. I keep adding compost or manure to my soil but it never makes a long lasting difference, my soil still looks dry as a bone within 24 hours of rain. But I feel your pain with the slugs/snails etc as my previous garden was just like your plot…. Full of them!

You’re so right Emma. It’s definitely been my worst year too with the amount of crops that I’ve lost and there I was the other day spotting my first red strawberry thinking “I’m going to get to it before the pesky slugs get to it” and upon turning it over, it was hollow and full of ANTS!!!!!! Fgs every day is a battle but we battle on together and as much as it’s tempting to use slug pellets and ant powder I can’t bring myself to as they are so bad for the other wildlife that visits x

Lovely note at the end emma - it is my first year this year and boy i just keep laughing because its so bad 🤣😅 one single radish was harvested, and it looks like I'll have potatoes and strawberried this year. The other 9 crops arent looking too great 😂 But seriously though, lovely words and sentiment! I will not be giving up 🙌

Hi Emma, everything is looking great. I have put slug collars round my dahlias. They have managed to grow again from well munched stubs.
Nice pep talk at the end. It's my first year having an allotment. Got the plot last August. I had slug problem a month or so back, all the lettuce I planted got slugged so I went and got nematodes. No real problem with them since then. However after being away for 3 days last weekend I came back to black fly on dahlias, broad beans and globe artichoke, rust on the majority of my garlic and blight on 2 of my potatoes I've grown in pots. Oh and loads of stuff has bolted. Felt like what's the point.
Don't give up! Harvest what you can now - you can still eat the potatoes and the plants that have bolted. You could leave some of the bolted plants to flower and then collect the seed for next year. Replant or focus on a different crop. I was gutted that my blackcurrant crop failed this year, but am going all out on strawberries instead and they are doing amazingly well (despite the slugs).

Another great video!! Interesting that you are finding spring onions difficult this year, like yourself I normally find them easy to get crops from but for whatever reason, they just don't seem to be working at the moment. Fingers crossed things will improve!

May I ask why you do not direct sow your runner beans, gourds/pumpkins, and especially the sunflowers?? They do not prefer to be transplanted and they reseed themselves often so easily. Why not just direct sow? To each her own, however I feel like one might be making things harder for oneself. When facing insect pressure, sow heavily.. :)
The directly sown sunflowers will be much healthier and bigger.
@@ourraggedroost8371It will likely be because of slugs. I have the same issue. I know Corn, Pumpkins & Sunflowers much, much prefer to be direct sown but slugs here go DIRECT to seedlings! I cannot grow wildflowers everrrrr for that very reason. Sowing seeds directly into the ground in my garden, is just preparing a buffet for the Slugs & Snails…….🐌 🍔🍕
Squirrels tend to eat or disturb our direct sow stuff here in Canada or its really wet and they rot. I usually do a bit of both...some in pots, some in ground and every year is a competition for who survives /thrives/dies. Every year is different and I get quite a few volunteer plants from seeds that I planted last year or animals have deposited in random spots...it's an adventure. I have some type of squash/cucumer growing in my pea and bean bed and I didn't plant those there so waiting to see what it turns out to be. I live a very exciting life 😂.
I watched a video today, saying that porridge oats will keep away slugs and snail, have you tried that yet?
Ew. As soon as it rains it would go mushy and then after a few days, that moisture would make it go mouldy 🤢
