Yep, Smokey turned a Negative into a Positive. After being rejected to be the opening act for Jackie Wilson Berry Gordy took them under his Wing, and after making on $3.11 on Their First Single Got A Job, Smokey told Berry You're a Cat who knows music why work for the man, be the man. He borrowed a then unheard of amount of $800.00 bought a House stuck a Sign that says Hitsville USA and the rest is History.
He was about 25 in this Performance. In the 1960's there's no way you could go to a Party and not Listen to this Song. In a Movie called Heaven Help Us aka "Catholic Boys" the Boys from St. Basil's High School, and the Girls From their Sister School Virgin Martyr slow danced. He's doing what's known as Falsetto aka The High Voice. Also keep in mind that alot of R & B Groups had a Falsetto. Eddie Kendricks of The Temptations (RIP) and Russell Tompkins (The Stylistics). Smokey worked with these guys overall from 1954-1972 but when he was getting all of the attention. It's 1965, and he was 25 since he was born on February 19th 1940. Also February 19th 1985 was the debut of The UK Soap Opera Eastenders.
Back in the early 2000s I saw Smokey in concert in Atlantic City. He sang hit songs he wrote for his group the Miracles, and songs he wrote for himself as a solo artist, and songs he wrote for other artists. Three hours in he was still singing. I had to leave because the chick I was with had to use the bathroom. For all I know he might still be there singing.
Smokey has the sweetest voice ever put on record. That high sweet voice is one of the most distinctive in music. I saw him 5 times during this period, the early 60's, and believe me he and The Miracles always delivered. This IMO is better than the recorded version because you really get to see the passion with which Smokey sang. Of course Smokey is still alive and performing at the ripe young age of 80. Long life Smokey. Listen to him doing "Tracks Of My Tears", "Tears Of A Clown", "You Really Got A Hold On Me", "More Love" and "Cruisin' ".
He was once called "America's Greatest Living Poet" by Bob Dylan. His Songs have been sung by Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, The Marvelettes, and in future years his Songs have been Covered by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kim Carnes, Linda Rondstadt, The Jackson Five, and En Vogue. In The UK his Song "Who's Loving You" is now the most popular Auditon Song on The X Factor. Also his Songs have been used for Companies like Certs, Burlington Coat Factory, Sunmaid Raisins, & Walmart. It is 1965 and he was 25. This was from a Show sponsored by Murray The K Kaufman who at the time was one of America's Top DJ's.
The song was released in 1965 by Motown; Producer was Smoky Robinson. He wrote and produced a lot of music for Motown artists back in the sixties, and other artists in the seventies and beyond, as well for himself. He is 82 years young, was born 1940, so in 1965, when this song was recorded and released, he was 25.
Satori it does my heart good to see you getting in touch with the old school music of our culture. Music is such a big part of lives got us through a lot of hardships. You can't go wrong with old school.
That was 1965, the year I met my late husband. It was our song dancing to the jukebox at Victors party store in Ecorse Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Smokie was a heart throb back in those days. Motown had taken over the world of music. The flavor is unreal.
I'm from Detroit and your right about Motown my mother told me about the vibes in Detroit at that time and what yall were doing as teenagers and young adults. I was born 3 years after this performance my mother was 21 years old.
Detroit in the house !! Had to be in the 60's when Motown was putting out hit after hit. Smokey is about 80 years old he's still looking good and has the same voice !! Check him out !!
THE MIRACLES were MOTOWN RECORDS’ First vocal group. They consisted of SMOKEY ROBINSON, BOBBY ROGERS, PETE MOORE , RONNIE WHITE. There were also TWO OTHER MEMBERS Of The Group: MARV TARPLIN, (Playing The Guitar BEHIND them) and SMOKEY’S WIFE, CLAUDETTE ROBINSON, who was not on stage for this show, because she retired from all live performances in 1964, This clip was filmed LIVE at the FOX THEATRE in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1965. All of the MIRACLES were in their mid 20’s, and Color TV was not , at the time, available everywhere.

He was Motown Records (nicknamed "Hitsville" in Detroit) one of the biggest and the brightest! He never had a bad song!!
