I cannot understand why people would say Tommy Bolin did not jell with Deep Purple. They should have a listen to the Come Taste the Band album. It was different from Deep Purple's other records, but, it is a solid album! It is unfortunate about his drug habits and it led to his life ending far too soon. However, his time with Deep Purple should be remembered from Come Taste the Band which is still one of my favorites from Purple.

    R. I. P. Tommy
One of the most underrated musicians in the 1970.
Its so sad, that he died so young, but in the music he lives on.
    Rock on Tommy

Tommy plays this well with a damaged arm, and sings it well too.
Purple back him well enough, considering it was not their music or their feel.
The best song on Last Concert In Japan.
    Rest In Peace Tommy.
    Love to Sioux City IOWA.

Tommy shot himself up with morphine and laid on his right arm for several hours, rendering it numb. Although by this song he seemed to have recovered enough to have play a good lead.

My favorite version of this brilliant song. Despite having had a physically impaired arm during his performance at this show, Tommy Bolin brings tremendous feeling here on this song with both his lead vocal and guitar playing, and Jon Lord's organ is the perfect accompaniment. So glad DP had the good sense to include it in the set list. For years the "Last Concert In Japan" album was not available in the United States, but an edition was finally released here not too long ago, and I bought it on both CD and vinyl formats primarily for this song alone.

  • @GreenerHill

I think this is the best version of Wild Dogs recorded. It's a brilliant song anyway, but Paice's busy drumming and Lord's atmospheric organ take the thing up a notch. And of course the dual vocals with Hughes. Awesome. Why the heck did they drop the song in 1976?

The guitar is having a conversation itself.
At the end of the song… the guitar’s notes are saying…. “Why you don’t wanna be with me?!! And pepe at 3 times!!”
Bolín changes the swing and respond……” cause I’ve never been in your heart!”

I love this version. Tommy puts down a heartfelt solo and the rest of the band is completely into the song too. Deep Purple really made Tommy rock out and eventhough he wasn't in excellent shape at that Last Concert, he still shines on the songs he wrote with Purple.

  • @dpurpura1
    @dpurpura1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

This wasn't the best Bolin's version wild dogs but the rest of the band was so higher. The Lord's atmospheric keyboards, the Huges' chorus, and his bass, and Paice's drums... Amazing! Saddly that the fucking drugs did not showed us his evolution in years... Rest in Peace, friend.

This is a song of all time. I had his box set of three CDs and it doesn't have the Deep Purple version on it. It is hands down the best recording of it he was at the 17th Street tap in 76 in Sioux city and played three or four songs. Tommy partied like he played HARD. it's a shame that a lot of young people haven't heard of him. He still wears the ring that Hendrix was wearing when he died some still argue that he was better than Hendrix. I wouldn't go that far but he was amazing RIP Tommy

Cut him down for his failings with Deep Purple if you like .... anyone who knows anything about guitars knows that he did not really ever jell with this band....(who the fuck else would even have TRIED to replace Blackmore anyways?) Tommy fit much better following Joe Walsh in the james gang, his work on Billy Cobham's 'Spectrum' and his instrumental group 'Energy' were the original template for jazz fusion for Christ's sakes.....Tommy influenced everyone from Jeff Beck to Spyrogyra to Steppenwolf, Soundgarten and Motley Crew..... any of you critics think you could have ever been that influential and only lived to 26 years old is a 'Dreamer'.... pun intended on his masterpiece ballad from 1975's "Teaser" .... if Willie Dixon said the man was the "best guitarist who ever lived" that is enough for me to consider Tommy to at least be ONE of the best who ever lived ....... the man may RIP ..... but...... long live the rock...... & ~ * ^

roger keime Thank you .... they were foolish to not make new music with Tommy, like the James Gang did ..... Miami and Bang were both great new music at the time. Tommy did not fit in the mold of a Ritchie Blackmore sound alike......he was too original and creative for that

Great version, it came out of nowhere cause the rest of the gig is not very good, and that's a euphemism...but this song, and this solo, even if we can notice a certain lack of attack on strings(doesn't alter it though) and the annoying backing vocals by Hugues, is remarkable ! Inventive and magic ! Thanks Tommy, you're gone too soon, RIP.

This is a great cut from an otherwise underwhelming album. I love the MKIV era as Tommy is one of my all time favourite musicians. As mentioned by others, Come Taste The Band is such a great album which has aged like a fine wine. I recently purchased the remastered edition and it sounds fantastic! The German pressing is worth tracking down as well. For live MKIV i recommend the Purple release Live at Long Beach... which is a remastered edition of "On the Wings Of A Russian Foxbat"
