This is one reason why I believe it always good to be careful of the heroes you admire. One time a friend asked me 'who my favourite actor was?' I couldn't answer because most actors might have done something bad in their past. Most people confuse the characters with the actors and think the actor portraying a good person must also be a good person in real life. I also hear stories where actor portraying the villain in the movie would be sent threatening letter and lash out about their character in the movie. They never think the actor invented their character from watching other people around them and then incorporating those things into the character.

It's always the characters I like that are the bad ones. Must've been hard for Stabler to come to the answer that a friend and mentor was a murderer, having to fight him and destroy that friendship.

Jaclyn Smith had a similar role in another episode of 'SVU' she aided Benson & Stabler in another case & it turned out SHE was the perp all along.
Basically they are just there for the main character to have a moral conflict or to be betrayed.
