Maria Callas was a Beautiful Greek woman. Why she thought she was an ugly duckling compared to her sister is beyond me. Even in her late years Maria was Beautiful.

That's why Maria since when moved alone to Italy at 17 years old to become the greatest singer in the world never wanted to see her family again, keeping contact only with her godfather and at rarely with her father, she always said that blood relations meant nothing. It's not that she didn't miss them, but she knew they couldn't give her the love she looked for.
Maria has a much close relation with her father than with her mother, even she invited him to lots of her concerts, there are photos of Maria with her father backstage, I have never seen any with her mother or sister. When her father died in 1975 I think, she was very touched.
Callas studied more than anyone else, alone, and she had to prove herself over and over again at her early steps of her carrier, and when she finally made it on her own Jackie remembered she had a sister and she was asking for Callas to help her? Callas created the opportunity, it wasn't given to her with a red carpet. This is the example of a spoiled child, that wants "recognition" given to her to a plate. If Jackie had indeed real talent and most importantly LOVE for singing, she would pursuit on her own with dignity, not begging her sister for help.
Wow! Just read Maria's biography on wikipedia. I now see how complicated her early life was. If what is written about her mother is true, then Maria had ample reason to be mad at her mother.
Listening to this woman and her husband, criticizing her dead sister, makes me understand why Maria avoided her family as much as possible. Obviously, all this woman is jealous and greedy person. She wanted nothing to do with her sister or her mother, so it's awful to watch Jackie acting like she's some big-shot here (along with her ridiculous husband). Maria earned her fame and wealth through legendary talent, hard work and determination, while Jackie is sponging off of Maria's greatness. I truly don't understand all the antagonistic and negative comments against Jackie! She seemed quite gracious to me. However, it does sound like both girls were raised in a very dysfunctional family situation, with both parents basically hating each other. That would have obviously have very harmful effects on the children, and cause family rifts. If any blame is to be placed on anyone, it should be on the parents, not on either Jackie or Maria.

There are many talented and beautiful singers, but just a few are fortunate to have the right connections. There is no reason not to believe that Maria's sister was no doubt a very talented woman. Her English is excellent but her Greek accent is much heavier than Maria's, which makes sense given that Maria was born in America, while Jackie came to America when she was 6.

At some point during the war her mother and sister would entertain soldiers and Maria did not agree with this type of life. Her mother would push her on dates. Maria would hang out with the soldiers and sing to them and she return with money or food that she would hand out to couples with babies. She yelled her high notes, which were open as hell, and her vibrato was ugly and uneven, showing a more than amateurish breathing technique. She attacked all the notes from underneath. She sang and sounded just as she was: nasty.

She has a great voice, especially considering that she had only been training for a few years. But I don't recognize her sister's special gift for interpretation.
But i do have to disagree with Jackie on Maria's voice being lyric coloratura which wasn't entirely correct because callas was definitely a dramatic soprano/dramatic coloratura in the early part of her career and there are recordings to back it. It wasn't till later in her career she was more lyric coloratura. Makes you wonder if Jackie really paid much attention or better yet really listened to her sister Callas.

I'd say Jackie and Maria were 1/2 sisters but it was Jackie who had different paternity. Litsa was very close to a soldier called Christos, who was also the family's servant in Greece when they still had money. Jackie and Christos had portraits taken together before the family left for America in 1923.
When I listen to this interview, I can't help but remember the rivalry between my one aunt and her 2 sisters. My Aunt Nina was stunningly beautiful. Had it all money, looks, and men. Yet she was like Callas, incredibly stingy with her money. Obsessed with being poor, etc. Refused to write up a new will because she refused to admit she was mortal. She was also was obsessed with her mother & father preferring her older sister in a fierce rivalry that existed mainly in her mind. Was there some sibling rivalry. Sure that always exists. Ironically my mother was the actual favorite, because she was the youngest and didn't participate in any rivalries with either sister and took care always of her parents. My point here is that there are always multiple sides to every story and that although Callas eas a great artist, she may not be so innocent. Sibling rivalries always exist in families, but then one needs to grow up and become an adult. Calla's mother wasn't perfect, but she also raised her. She didn't abandon her daughter which she could have, so obviously there was some love there.
Children do not owe their parents anything simply for being their parents. It is the parents' responsibility to love, care for, and respect their children without expecting anything in return. Maria's mother was verbally and emotionally abusive, forced her to work and attempted to pimp her out to Nazi soldiers as a child, and blackmailed her as an adult. Maria showed emotional maturity and strength in cutting her off. Maria was clearly a woman who knew her worth and knew that she did not need to keep toxic people in her life just because society expected her to.

I didn't know Jackie Callas sang - as I understood it she attempted a career as a concert pianist. Certainly the family issues were complex - a very sad situation . From that tape I make out a basically talented vocalist but the voice has none of Maria Callas' vocal magnetism or way with musical phrasing and drama. This video is amazing - thank you so much for posting it. The Great Maria Callas was otherworldly - an incredible woman and artist. She wanted nothing to do with her sister or her mother, so it's awful to watch Jackie acting like she's some big-shot here (along with her ridiculous husband). Maria earned her fame and wealth through legendary talent, hard work and determination, while Jackie is sponging off of Maria's greatness. These people in this video only care about Jackie because of her incredible, beautiful sister.
When Jackie talks about being proud of being Maria's sister at about 5:00, there is a little pause, a tilt of the head, and then she continues the thought. That is something that Maria always did as well. You can't escape your genetics!

I truly don't understand all the antagonistic and negative comments against Jackie! She seemed quite gracious to me. However, it does sound like both girls were raised in a very dysfunctional family situation, with both parents basically hating each other. That would have obviously have very harmful effects on the children, and cause family rifts. If any blame is to be placed on anyone, it should be on the parents, not on either Jackie or Maria.

There are many talented and beautiful singers, but just a few are fortunate to have the right connections. There is no reason not to believe that Maria's sister was no doubt a very talented woman. Life is a tree that branches off in different directions.
Jackie in her youth was a very beautiful woman,she dated for many years the son of a very rich Greek shipowner but never got married.It is very unfortunate that most of Maria's fortune was stolen or went to the wrong hands.Jackie got very little .Vaso Deventzi was a very dishonest woman and not Maria's friend. She took advantage of the situation and died shortly after.The 800,000 francs plus many of Maria's belongings and art collection just disappeared.What Meneghini inherited went to his maid.

Disgusting people indeed. Technically speaking, her singing (without mentioning that it was just a recording with piano accompaniment) had just one dynamic: forte. She yelled her high notes, which were open as hell, and her vibrato was ugly and uneven, showing a more than amateurish breathing technique. She attacked all the notes from underneath. She sang and sounded just as she was: nasty.

She has a great voice, especially considering that she had only been training for a few years. But I don't recognize her sister's special gift for interpretation.
But i do have to disagree with Jackie on Maria's voice being lyric coloratura which wasn't entirely correct because callas was definitely a dramatic soprano/dramatic coloratura in the early part of her career and there are recordings to back it. It wasn't till later in her career she was more lyric coloratura. Makes you wonder if Jackie really paid much attention or better yet really listened to her sister Callas.

I'd say Jackie and Maria were 1/2 sisters but it was Jackie who had different paternity. Litsa was very close to a soldier called Christos, who was also the family's servant in Greece when they still had money. Jackie and Christos had portraits taken together before the family left for America in 1923.

When I listen to this interview, I can't help but remember the rivalry between my one aunt and her 2 sisters. My Aunt Nina was stunningly beautiful. Had it all money, looks, and men. Yet she was like Callas, incredibly stingy with her money. Obsessed with being poor, etc. Refused to write up a new will because she refused to admit she was mortal. She was also was obsessed with her mother & father preferring her older sister in a fierce rivalry that existed mainly in her mind. Was there some sibling rivalry. Sure that always exists. Ironically my mother was the actual favorite, because she was the youngest and didn't participate in any rivalries with either sister and took care always of her parents. My point here is that there are always multiple sides to every story and that although Callas eas a great artist, she may not be so innocent. Sibling rivalries always exist in families, but then one needs to grow up and become an adult. Calla's mother wasn't perfect, but she also raised her. She didn't abandon her daughter which she could have, so obviously there was some love there.
Children do not owe their parents anything simply for being their parents. It is the parents' responsibility to love, care for, and respect their children without expecting anything in return. Maria's mother was verbally and emotionally abusive, forced her to work and attempted to pimp her out to Nazi soldiers as a child, and blackmailed her as an adult. Maria showed emotional maturity and strength in cutting her off. Maria was clearly a woman who knew her worth and knew that she did not need to keep toxic people in her life just because society expected her to.

I didn't know Jackie Callas sang - as I understood it she attempted a career as a concert pianist. Certainly the family issues were complex - a very sad situation . From that tape I make out a basically talented vocalist but the voice has none of Maria Callas' vocal magnetism or way with musical phrasing and drama. In fact the Tenor is the most impressive singer on this selection.
