I saw live Sutherland, Sills and Moffo in concert who was so awesome in a great variety of selections. And I was amazed how large her voice was. Recordings don't catch a lot of it and marvelous interpretations.
What about Edda Moser? Erna Sack? Ingeborg Hallstein? Mado Robin? Luciana Serra? Just to mention a few I know... I wonder about some russian singers, as well....
Dame Joan Sutherland made every role her own ; I can listen to her all day.I have to settle on alternative sopranos for recordings of Butterfly,Tosca,Mimi and Aida (sadly she didn’t record those) otherwise it’s Joan for me all the way.Even her “Trovatore” has become my first choice as much as I admire the Zinka Milanov and Leontyne Price gems.I worship at Dame Joan’s shrine !
I've seen them all live. Sutherland was by far the best for the size, beauty and flexibility of the voice she was without peer. My second favorite live was Battle, whose voice in the house was so beautiful as to be heartbreaking although it was small. Her Cleopatra was one of my top 3 performances I ever saw. The rest are all great but for me without a supremely beautiful or interesting voice coloratura gets annoying.
This video....made me nearly die of beauty appreciation. Joan Sutherland: WOW June Andersen: This much enjoyment...should not be permissible while listening to a recording. Kathleen Battle: This is the first recording I've heard of hers that I liked this much. It's making me curious about why. I will have to go and compare more. Edita Gruberova: I'm mixed. I like her actual voice quality, but some of her techniques end up making not like the end result. Elena Mosuc: There was such an echo, but she sounded nice? Diana Damrau: I just can't get into her performances because she overacts every single performance, regardless of concert or opera. But I also don't believe she is best in coloratura, she does better in heavier roles. Mariella Devia: Beautiful, consistent Roberta Peters: I really enjoyed that, and I am surprised because usually the role sounds a bit screechy. Hers was very pretty! I only wished the recording wasn't cut off! Sumi Jo: I'm not usually in the Sumi Jo camp in general, as it were, but she does a bang up job here. Her voice feels too thin usually but it feels nice here. Natalie Dessay: I really love Natalie's recordings and I love how passionately she engages with the music during performances I've seen. It's not the best musically at this point, however. A younger coloratura named Sabine Devieilhe has been compared to her. Beverly Sills: There was such enjoyment in her face, and it made me feel how earlier opera lovers must have felt when they could see her televised. I am not really into her voice though. I am asking: For example: Why isn't Lucia Popp on this list??
Katherine Wilson ■ You're right about Damrau. I think she overacts to cover for the fact that the music is beyond her vocal avenues ; but, ironically, her Queen of the Night was good, I thought.
Take that back, Diana is amazing. She gives the role the acting it needs, to bring over the emotions. Not only she sounds amazing, her acting is amazing… but I’m agreeing with the rest👍
Where is Ruth Ann Swenson and Ruth Welting? Both were extraordinary indeed! Swenson's voice was large and vibrant and Welting though a smaller lighter voice was agile and amazing! The Met stupidly let Swenson go for inferior sopranos and she now teaches and Welting died of Cancer far too soon her Lucia and Gilda are amazing!
Joe Miller :: You are right-on about Swenson's voice ! She was one of the best, if not _the_ best. Her dramatic sound was phenomenal. I also liked Welting & Hoch ! Battle, here, was very surprising !
I saw/heard Swenson in Lucia in the 90s. The man sitting in front of me (who was considerably older than I was) said "do you like this?" I responded "not really". He said "yeah, I've seen them all. Sutherland was the best. This is forgettable." I don't agree about Swenson. Her voice was weirdly Germanic and her high notes always failed in spectacular ways. I saw Sutherland in her last run of Lucias in 1982. Infinitely better than Swenson even in her late 50s.
Most of those posted are singing repertoire inappropriate for them or they're past their prime. It's unfortunately. I agree about Tetrazzini. Lina Pagliughi was quite wonderful as well. Mariella Devia is still quite wonderful.
Adelina Patti was the greatest in the 19th century, then Nellie Melba, Elvira de Hidalgo, Luisa Tetrazzini, Selma Kurz, Marcela Sembrich. From kind of recent decades, María Callas and Joan Sutherland (both by technique). The rest can only aspire to be good.
Sutherland had indeed fhe best voice! She was called "La Stupenda". She was also coached by her husband Richard Boninge. She had a full voice and her coloratura's were amazing. La Deutekom excelled in the queen of fhe night, but there are better Dutch recordings of her queen of the night than this one.
Però però... Rosina non è parte da soprano... è un contralto. Poi le cantanti fanno i loro virtuosismi. Ci sono parti scritte proprio per la coloratura. Norma non è personaggio da "colorare" . Lei indubbiamente è bravissima.
my voice teacher told me today this is my voice type... bestie I thought I was a mezzo for YEARS but then I started taking voice lessons what the hell im excited because like ¨YAY I CAN SING THIS FUN SHIT¨ but I'm also lokie terrified
Callas was a soprano assoluta with the best coloratura. Elvira de Hidalgo (Callas teacher) Now sopranos with the style of a lightened voice (bad taste) but good technique: Luisa Terrazzini and Toti dal Monte
This list is so arbitrary and based on personal taste and not on any any factual or objective reality. Some of the Sops listed are far from being "the best". Hyperbole statements are a double-edged sword
Deatekmo , June Anderson and early Joan Sutherland are great coloraturas and say what you want about Kathleen battle but she has a very clear headvoice , katleen battle in my opinion a decent coloratura soprano not the greatest but good
Battle, June Anderson, Deutekom are excellent. Half of this woman are another voice type singing coloratura. The only real coloratura voice is Kathleen Battle. Anderson and Deutekom are outstanding but they lyric sopranos.
@@juniorroger1994 She is not. Which in her case only give her the upper hand cause her voice is bigger than most light lyric or coloratura sopranos so. A real coloratura soprano would be for example a Luisa Tetrazzini type of voice.
This is silly. Read a little. Battle was a lyric soprano who could sing coloratura. She was a beautiful singer, especially live, but there are better coloratura sopranos than she is. The greatest was Sutherland (this clip is well past her prime).
Bal 8a :: Unfortunately, Sumac did too much vocalizing & not enough operatic arias to get a true sense of her fantastic range. It was very frustrating listening to her & what could have been ...
Kathleen Battle is indeed a coloratura soprano. In 1985 Times Magazine said she was one of the best coloratura singers in the world. Don’t disrespect a legend!
Listen to Dimash Kudaibergen, by far the best singer of this generation. Neo classical pop comptemporain crossover singer whit over 7 octaves....singing in 12 different language he s a falsetist mastering dynamiq ,control ,stamina, and crazy range ,at only 27 years old.phenomenal singer.enjoy.
Versatile, yes, best tonal quality, emotions flowing from acting and voice, and bel canto technique? No dear, very much of a mediocre when it comes to that.

Super maghnific bravo
Christina Deutekom is phenomenal.
this is worth to see and listen! it is beautiful!
Swenson was without peer in this century. So much joy in her glorious singing
I saw live Sutherland, Sills and Moffo in concert who was so awesome in a great variety of selections. And I was amazed how large her voice was. Recordings don't catch a lot of it and marvelous interpretations.
God has touched you with his little finger.
Sound quality during Roberta Peters recoring is distorted. What went wrong? Clipping in the then-analog domain?
Queen Deutekom❤❤❤
My toxic trait is thinking I could sing any of this 😳😳😳😳
Me too! 🤣🤣🤣
😅
Deutekom, Devia und Anderson are the best - without any doubt
What about Edda Moser? Erna Sack? Ingeborg Hallstein? Mado Robin? Luciana Serra? Just to mention a few I know... I wonder about some russian singers, as well....
*Edita Gruberova* la plus belle voix de tous les temps ! ❣️
For me, it'd be Deutekom, Hallstein, Grist, Serra, and Tetrazzini.
Mariella Devia - prima donna assoluta 👏👏👏👏👏
The best is and was Evgeniya Miroshnichenko. No other soprano can even come close to her voice. Miroshnichenko is just the GREATEST. 😊😊😊😊

Écoute la voix de Edita Gruberova.
Have listened to MARIA REMOLÁ??
This is an early recording of Battle. There's no wobble in her jaw or tongue, and the sound is much better
Joan Sutherland is not only the best singer, but she also has the best voice! There is no tension with her! She is unstoppable!
not unstoppable. She is dead😥

I agree. But I think the only flaw of her is her diction.

Well good thing the guy posting this vid is gorgeous cuz there was only like 5 actual coloraturas in the list.
Thank you 😊 for the compliment.

3.39 ?
The clip of Beverly Sills has criminally bad sound. She was amazing.
What about Sutherland?
why Ingeborg Hallstein was not in the list?
He made this list based on his personal taste. A list about best coloraturas sopranos without Ingebord is unacceptable.
Munequito, you forgot phenomenal soprano voices: Bogna Sokorska, Edda Moser, Elena Zimenkova, Erna Sack, Evgeniya Miroshnichenko, Galina Olineickenko, Galina Vishneskaya, Halina Mickiewiczówna, Ingeborg Hallstein, Jana Josanova, Katarzyna Dondalska, Lilly Pons, Mado Robin, Maria Gyurgowicz, Maria Zvezdina, Petia Ivanova, Vera Zhuravleva , Zinka Milanov, Zdzislawa Donat.
He probably has never heard of them...
Coloratura soprano - Norma ? For some, obviously.
Faltan varias muy buenas, por eso insisto, es muy injusto para aquellas que merecen ser consideradas y disfrutadas. Ej. Cecilia Bartoli. Gracias.
For me it is always Hallstein, Sokorska and Deutekom.
