Wong Ka Kui, the lead singer of Beyond, was a consummate musician in the truest sense. He not only played the guitar, but was also the lead vocals AND he wrote his own songs. You seem to enjoy and understand his music, and I applaud you for that. It's so unfortunate that Wong Ka Kui passed away at the height of his career, right as he was expanding his reach to Japan and beyond.

We were able to speak up and sing along with this type of lyrics before 1997. Appreciate your reaction towards Beyond. FYI 80s & 90s HK is very saturated with Pop idol driven music. Most of those Cantonese hits was cover or Japanese song so HK was pumping those cover song in huge number. No room for creation only copy. Beyond stood for music own creation, pursuing own dream. Beyond at the beginning musically was more heavy more rock, Wong Ka kui knew if they wanna make it in HK they need to change. The music needs to be more pop element, hair cut need to be more clean cut, image have to be friendlier. One of the reason they went to Japan is to pursue their "Music dream" and unfortunely died even before they really started. Beyond is an inspiration, whenever there is doubt I will listen to it's music. The older I get the more meaning I get listening to his songs.

Beyond was very difficult to survive when they start under the environment of very little respect to real music. One of many quotes from ka kui....Hong Kong only have entertainment industry, but no music industry. Back in that times, this statement was very arrogant and adventurous to people in the industry and many of them felt offensive.
Thanks for the review. Beyond is a much respected HONG KONG band, established at the time when Hong Kong was under the rule of the British. With economic success and political freedom, the music scene of Hong Kong was one of Asia’s best. Unfortunately, due to the untimely death of the lead singer Wong Ka Kui in 1993, and the many constraints Hong Kong is facing, Beyond is not the same anymore. But we can always revisit HONG KONG’s past glory in their records and videos. Those were the days.
Actually, Beyond are still pretty famous in China, especially in DouYin(the chinese version of tiktok) and several music platform .

Nice to see an European having an interest with a band in HK! They’re my favourite band in my childhood.
Although the songs you’ve done so far are popular songs from them, I am very confident to say those are not the works they feel most proud of and can represent them artistically…in fact, they hate some of these sappy ballads that were forced by the record company to write them for gaining mass audiences. HK music market & audiences at that time (even now too) are pretty shallow…so these are songs that suited their level…it is very hard to have true art in such environment…
