In this moment, he's trying to send his kids away from the impending catastrophe, and promises them he'll tell them what all this is about some other time. As he promises that, his kids look down and his daughter asks him why the ring is glowing.

The actual bomb actually going off during the finale of the fireworks extravaganza should be taught in writing classes as a flawless execution of the rule of threes.
Keep in mind, Brennan said that Patia’s arm being severed either way was actually a *good* thing, as it would allow a higher chance for her to survive what came next. Unfortunately what came next was the Tree exploding violently with Patia situated directly in front of it.

Lou: if I had a penny for each time Brennan made my lifelong best friend stab me in the back while on the verge of a catastrophic event I'd have 2 pennies, which is not a lot but it's weird it happened twice
One of my favourite parts was Brennan describing how Cerrit (?) was able to see someone who'd casted Invisibility on themselves by seeing the part of the eyes that couldn't be invisible or else they wouldn't absorb the light needed for that invisible person to still be able to see. What a crazy narration.
Plus the narration of how Cerrit is so easily able to hit the neck of an invisible opponent *just by knowing where the eyes are.* The entire scene from entering that room into the takedown makes Cerrit to be this well-honed detective birdman badass in a world of so much magic, and I love it.
"Though Calamity is here Calamity is here because of you it will not be here forever" is such a good line cause "Calamity is here because of you" "because of you it will not be here forever" are both true. Hubris is the sin of the whole age.
I love the moment at 2:55 when Aabria is like "ahh yeah, Dweomer, coming to defend me! That's my girl!" And then Brennan says Disintegrate and she immediately regrets it 🤣
IMO? This cemented Brennan as one of, if not the best DM in AP content right now. I've been thinking about this story since the finale, I've rewatched scenes and episodes over and over. This table with these players was especially brilliant, but Brennan brought it out in them too. And he was so beautifully generous all the way through. even when he was trying to kill them, he was giving them space to succeed as much as they could. This was perfect DnD.
Brennan was the perfect choice to DM Calamity, Matt and Aabria would've maybe tried to take it easy on the players a bit while Brennan revels in being a full blown psychopath out to traumatise the players as much as he can with a grin on his face
"This is not who you are!" "WHO AM I?!" "You're.... Not this!" Ah yes, That's when you know a character doesn't "get it". "Not this? NOT THIS?! Then what am I?! Do you truly know me enough to describe what I am or will your final words just be empty promises of knowledge?!"
I feel like he knows Brennan well enough to just tell him to fuck right off and get a laugh instead of offending him. You tip-toe a lot less around close friends than you do with casual friends. Just because you have more trust and are more familiar with what buttons not to push. (Not that they aren't all good friends, it's just clear Lou knows BLM a bit more than the others. At least, that's how I read it. As that's how my friends and I are with each other.)
I've always thought if I wanted a deep and profound game, as a player, I'd want to be on Matt's table and if I wanted an endless barrel of fun and laughter it would be at Brennans. After this mini-series, I'm not so sure that Brennen doesn't have it all. Some of the best D&D DM'ing I've ever seen, despite it being only a 4-shot. A slight caveat is that he had wonderful players, world building and production values to work with.
While EXU makes it very tempting to crown Brennan as the new king of DMing, you must understand the weakness of his style of game. While it creates a truly amazing game, it is very short term. It requires a set story, it requires a kind of vision to see a story in each characters backstory and see what kind of short story you can make from it. Like he says, the players build the rails, but his story does require rails. Matt Mercer uses much more traditional D&D storytelling which allows the players to have a more organic growth of their characters, and turns the story telling into a long format. The reason C1 of Critical Role was so amazing (imo way better than C2) was after he learned what drives his players he was able to tell that kind of tight railed story with the (spoilers possible) Conclave. Each of the characters personal backstories became a massive version of what Brennan does. Brennan only distills that awesomeness into a short format, which is why it is so entertaining to watch but I don't think it makes this style the best DMing ever seen. Although I think in his version of DMing Brennan might be the best.
@@OgenB you´re correct and Matt is a legend but Brennan is FULLY capable of doing longform story telling (he talk often of the games he does for his friends). It´s Just that the nature of the platforms he works on do not allow us to see that If Fantasy high season 2 is anything to go by, the guy can do it
I'd just love to see a co-DM series on one of the big channels. It can be done really well and there are definitely folks in the streaming community who could pull it off

As a writer this is so sick. The execution is amazing and inspiring and I haven't seen this campaign yet but it's on my list, I'm so thrilled to see what this already sick ass world has to offer

I have loved brennan as a DM this whole series. He is a wonderful combination of great storyteller, improver, and wants to see his players succeed as much as he wants to destroy them.

I was an emotional wreck after watching EXU: Calamity. I've watched it probably five more times since then and I see something new each time. It's truly an incredible piece of work. Brennan's GMing, the cast, Matt's world building. It's just everything. On par with the best films, books, music, whatever I've ever experienced. This is art.

I haven't really kept up with this DnD thing, but Brennen's energy throughout the video reminds me of that one picture of Elmo with his arms raised, staring into the sky while an inferno blazes behind him. Lou’s reactions to him are amazing, he heightened the others to much, I’m not sure what I love more the double birds at the fireworks or the hiding under the table due to disintegrate. I don’t think anything in CR will top Asmo’s flipping to his true face though.

@@johanlassen6448 it's probably more of a special rule in regards to the most powerful of them all. Asmodeus is, after all, the Lord of the Nine Hells and a Greater Diety to boot. It wouldn't be strange if he happened to possess an ability that could strip away and disenchant magic items, barring artifacts, made to combat lesser fiends.
imagine if, for even just a one-shot, Matt and Brennan Dual dm'd. As in, both at the same time. I have no idea if this is an actual thing, or even how it would work, but it just sounds cool
I've seen that done before on other shows, I think in that case it was during a war scene and one DM was controlling the Demons and one was controlling the Devils while the players tried not to get killed by either side. The DMs weren't really competing, it was just easier for them to keep track of things that way, I think.
I appreciate Aabria's expression at 4:42 ... and the fact that when the clip switches over at 4:44 , she's wearing the same one. Brennan is truly an ever present mind fuck.
Really enjoyed Patia instantly fucking dying as the immediate cost of her actions. Sure, everyone died eventually, but really "ramming it in dry" to an entire continent and it's peoples deserves some sort of player consequence, right? lol

Lou’s reactions to him are amazing, he heightened the others to much, I’m not sure what I love more the double birds at the fireworks or the hiding under the table due to disintegrate.
I don’t think anything in CR will top Asmo’s flipping to his true face though.

I've seen that done before on other shows, I think in that case it was during a war scene and one DM was controlling the Demons and one was controlling the Devils while the players tried not to get killed by either side. The DMs weren't really competing, it was just easier for them to keep track of things that way, I think.
