  • It's been 8 months since the release of the Crux Prime, so I'm examining how it's held up since release, and digging a little deeper into the SPEC coverstock, in addition to discussing the Pro Motion and the new Gravity Evolve.

    This video was very helpful. I got this ball with high hopes for it and really struggled with it in tournaments. I have the Omega Crux as well and much more success. I was ready to just cut my losses and retire this ball, but I saw this video and heard your comments on surface and how shine helps some people match up better with this ball. I thought "what the heck. Let's go a step further and polish it". Ta Da! While I have thrown it in tournaments, I love this ball in league when I need a more round shape than angle. For me the polished Prime is more consistent than the box finish. It does the same thing every time with little surprise.

    I've remained patient with the Crux Prime thankfully. Have rolled 600 series in the last two weeks with it by laying it down on about board 13 and targeting between the dots and the arrows on board 10. In the senior league I can just stay there all day long. Used it last night in the men's league and started laying it down on about 14 with the same target. It worked well for half a game and then it began coming in too light. Moved half a board with my feet and then another half a board shortly thereafter with very good success. To get here I took a 3000 grit pad to it and then finished it off with a 4000 grit pad by hand. Good hold on the right and shots off to the right come back pretty nice. Hitting my target results in booming strikes and had quite a few of those. :) Thanks Luke!

      Nice! Sometimes it just takes some patience and learning what the ball wants you to do with it. The Pro Motion continues to "grow" and if I let it be what it wants to be, it's amazing. If I try to make it be what I think it should be or what I want it to be, it's one of the worst balls I've ever thrown, so it's all about taking what you've got and LEARNING something. You might not match up with something at the end of the day, but if you at least give it a chance and really understand why that is, you get smarter as a bowler, and that's always a good thing.

    Thanks for your comments, Luke. I keep trying the Crux Prime with my relatively low rev game and speed around 15 mph. I find that by reducing the offset of boards from the laydown point it's better, but haven't found the right place to lay it down. I generally use the IQ Tour by laying it down on board 16 and target board 13 at the dots. Use about the same for the Hy-Road Pearl. Code X works nicely for me around that area as well. Maybe I should try moving a little farther to the right and see if I can get a hook set reaction out of the Crux. Don't know...

      @@LukeRosdahl I found a better place to play the Crux Prime. Laying it down on about board 14 and target 12 1/2 at the dots. Could miss the pocket for the first two games. Not a ton of strikes, but the ball held up well. Without the striking power I hoped for I switched to another ball in game 3. Picked up the Pro-Motion this week and it was a monster by laying it down on board 16 and target 11 at the dots. Perhaps I ought to try the Crux closer to that as well. Not sure. The Pro-Motion acts more like an asymmetrical ball and powers through the pins very nicely. Once I have more confidence in these two pieces I'm hoping my scores will improve. I'm going to kind of take your advice and let them both lane shine a bit and see what happens...

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@clowny2396 Yeah, just stay patient, and they're not both going to work on every pattern in every situation. Crux Prime works better with more closed angles or if you just lay it down nice and easy. When my wife's Evolve video comes out, there are a few shots of the Prime in it, so would recommend checking that out. The Prime looks good for her and she just plays a little slow hook and lets the ball have time to wind up

Also has worked well for me on fresh house shots. Now that the crux is discontinued I can't get a 14.. what would be a good ball like this that doesn't respond quickly to friction?

    Hi Luke,
    Appreciate your videos. So I’ve been rolling with a crux prime since April, used it in summer and have started this season with it as well. I finally got an abralon pad, but mistakenly thought it was a 1500 grit ball and I hand sanded it with a 1000. It dulled it up more than I wanted so I rubbed some storm extra shine before play started last night and proceeded to throw a 222 game 1(I average 165) and was in love with the shape for that game. Sadly, it didn’t hold that shape for the other 2 games.
    I’m completely new to attempting new surface grits, but do you shine it up from stock, what do you use?
    Final note, I generally line up at arrow 6 aiming at 3.
    Most pearls I’m 7 to 3

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rick Johnson Just play around with it, any time you add surface it’s eventually going to shine up because the lane will polish it, and you can go from one grit to another without hurting anything. You may have to do the same process before every league set to make sure it’s how you want it

  • @andresvillarreyna
    @andresvillarreyna 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video luke, but I was wanting to know if you had any idea why I feel like my promotion has died only after about 120 games on it. I loved it OOB and it hooked the lane, but after a while it somehow became lazy downlane. I have tried baking it and even have resurfaced it but it only gives me that amazing reaction for about 3 games and then it’s back to that weak and lazy down lane reaction. I’m a two hander with about 450 revs and throws about 17 mph. I really loved the ball OOB and really want to get this ball to how it was or to atleast give me some good motion downlane again.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andres Villarreyna It’s likely the surface thing, whenever I hit it with surface it always gets lazy again for a while because the cover is so strong, it gets really early and smooth, it just doesn’t need surface on a house shot. Also is this in practice or in league? I’ve noticed that because of the slow absorption rate, I have a tougher time with reaction in practice when I’m throwing shots more frequently. Even with toweling the ball off, the cover gets a little slick when I’m throwing a shot every minute or so. The best practice I’ve found is to treat the cover like its urethane, it needs a little shine on it, needs a little oil in it, and because the absorption rate is so slow, it will get a little slick if you throw shot after shot after shot with it in a shorter window of time than just a shot every few minutes during league

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also definitely wouldn’t bake it . . Detox only! But I haven’t found that it needs it, I’ve got a little over 100 games on my Pro Motion too and the only time it gets lazy is when I scuff it up or practice too quickly with it, just a super strong cover despite how smooth it is, can be hard to make sense

    I have soft ball speed and we bowl on a house shot that makes a strong move at the breakpoint. Better to polish it or try taking the surface up to, say, 4k first?

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah you could try 4K first, and I actually wouldn't polish it, I'd just throw it and let it lane shine. See how you like it a couple different ways, but shine is usually best on quick backends for Spec just because it's still not going to be jumpy on friction, it's just going to make the angles easier and not force you too far left to get the ball down the lane.

    • @slbennett9057
      @slbennett9057 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I will try to let it lane shine. Problem also is early roll/soft hit because of lane condition and the slowish ball speed, but at that point probably better to just put it up.

    Why do some reactives die when they soak up tons of oil and others do not?

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's where they start to where they end, the overall conditions, and the style of the bowler. I've had some balls "die" that have gotten awful, and other balls "die" and all the sudden become amazing. Every ball will still soak up oil and that will reduce the overall reaction, BUT take the Idol Pearl for example. It's really clean and flippy at first, but once it gets some oil in it and tames down, it is "dying," but actually becomes a lot more controllable and usable. With some balls like the IQ Tour that's not big on shape or backend to begin with, it can get a whole lot lazier when it "dies," which is going to make it look pretty bad. Also, the stronger the ball is to begin with, the more you're going to notice reaction decline.

    • @coopergates9680
      @coopergates9680 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LukeRosdahl All that makes sense, but I have a ball that I haven't noticed react less at all after plenty of games without cleaning, and two others which not only do that but won't even leak fluid out on the surface when I heat them.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@coopergates9680 It depends on the cover chemicals too, I don't know the science behind it, but generally stronger covers soak up more oil. Could have something to do with the oil itself too, maybe a thicker viscosity oil takes longer to absorb?

    • @coopergates9680
      @coopergates9680 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LukeRosdahl It should take longer. I've thrown the one ball which does show oil on its surface when heated in two houses, one of which shows a much more severe tendency to weaken other reactive balls when filling them up.

    • @LukeRosdahl

      It’s just not really possible unless you make the ball harder, and if you make it harder it’s not going to hook, and the more resistant you make it to lane shine, the harder it would be to adjust the surface.
