The Mayday Run is an annual motorcycling event in southern England which takes place every first May bank holiday Monday.
The event involves thousands of motorbikes taking a 50-mile (80km) trip down the A21 road (via the M25) from Locksbottom, near Orpington, to Hastings seafront on the Sussex south coast.
Since 1979, it has seen thousands of bikers ride the route yearly. But unfortunately, it didn't run in 2020 due to the pandemic.
In the early 2010s, the local council wanted to stop the free movement of people visiting Hastings due to unsociable activity from a limited number of motorcyclists. However, one keen motorcyclist who knew local councillors was vocal about how the footfall was great for the local economy and should be embraced. So, with the town council's blessing, he organised stalls, entertainment, security and volunteer marshals, which had to be independently funded to ensure the Mayday Run could continue into Hastings. Numbers rapidly rose to see 46,500 motorcycles and 85,000 people invade Hastings in 2018. However, the pandemic disruption meant the operation couldn't continue. As far as I could see, in 2022, the council only provided marshals to Pelham Place car park.
In my opinion, unlike the years before the pandemic, a good mooch around all the independent retail stalls, exhibitions, shows and experiences made this a first-class day for all motorcyclists - even if only stopping for ice cream. Still, without the organisation, I doubt we'll ever see all the stalls again. Still, there is plenty to see, do, eat and drink.
Get in early! Hastings fills up with tourists and motorbikes by around 10.30am. The A21 can get severely congested during mid-morning. While police presence and mobile camera units were along the route, it is great to see it raises road safety awareness.

It goes to Hasting, not Eastbourne. There are a number of pubs on Hastings seafront to choose from.
