The SNES' AV multi out was sold separately and almost no one even had a TV with composite inputs anyway. Most kids didn't even know what that was.
Ah, I love generational tech, I knew all too well about composite, ugrading to component was such a good feeling on the Wii, to see your games slightly more crisp was a joy.
@@BBWahoo When the Nintendo 64 came out, it was AV only, so it was connected to my VCR since it was common to have Composite on VCRs and not TVs. The audio was connected to a stereo because the VCR was only mono. I then discovered that the N64 multi out jack was compatible with the Super Nintendo, so I got high quality stereo sound out of it for the first time.
I believe it would be a Hi-C, but Nintendo can't say that without a lawsuit.

All of a sudden, the description of Kannon in the German translation, "Es sieht so aus, als ob Matsch schießen kann" ("It looks like mud can shoot"), finally makes sense in context. Whoever translated this, didn't recognize Klump as a name, tried to translate it and created a character description I never understood until now.

and german description never really improved... both in the Nintendo eShop and the PlayStation store I've seen "roguelike" translated as "Spiel im Banditen stil"

The banana coins actually caused me to win a 100% VS game against my older brother when we were kids. I went to Funky’s Flights in every world throughout our sessions, then when we stopped and resumed later. I was able to fly through the worlds to finish gathering all the secrets while he had to spend a turn replaying a level to gather banana coins. XD
To me, Dixie's slowfall always seemed more like how the Cape worked in Super Mario World, since she doesn't ever actually hover. Though, of course, she lacks an actual flying ability.
It's analogous to what Bunny Mario (from Super Mario Land 2) is to Raccoon Mario (from SMB3).

This is the first time I've seen Dixie's idle animation and it looks plain to me that she's just pulled out a carton of juice.
I swear always wanted to have a New Game Plus mode where you play as Donkey after 102%ing the base game. But still, DKC2 was a total childhood staple that I played endless times. Watching walkthroughs to get every item was one of my earliest memories of me watching TH-cam
The Gameboy version is pretty cool too. With picture scrapbooks, added bonuses, and a extra boss makes it a fun game.
Fun fact, that the JP version of the game is Super Donkey Kong 2 : Dixxie and Diddy. So Dixxie get's to have her name in the tittle along side Diddy.
I think every enemy making a deep brute sound when slain beside the bees is hilarious. I prefer that over different pitches any day.
I'm assuming Dixie was drinking a juice box; basically a Hi-C, but Nintendo couldn't outright say that without being sued. However the box is clearly yellow and the beverage looks pink; perhaps pink lemonade.

DKC2 is great, an amazing adventure where you go deep into enemy territory. It has amazing designs and music that takes you right into the new worlds, special mention to Mining Melancholy.
And Dixie is awesome, I wish she had more recognition.
The whole thing about DK or Cranky being the real arcade gorilla is pretty confusing, I think Nintendo finally put a stop to that and accepted that Rare's DK is a redesign of Miyamoto's original. In Smash Bros., they usually say that he "debuted" in 1981.

When it comes to music in DKC2, my fav also goes against the grain of popularity.
My fav as a kid was Krook's March, the Castle theme.
This reminded me allot of the Bowser Castle themes from the Mario games but Krook's March from DKC2 was more creepy and gives you a sense that what was about to come waiting towards the top of the castle was threatening.
You had to get good especially with the Toxic Tower level with the slime always rising and you had to be on your toes at all times with your platforming and your speed through.
Playing as Dixie for most of the game, I had to get used to playing as Diddy just to get further in front with the Toxic Tower of Slime.
Krook's March is such a good theme. I could have made this video 20 minutes longer just talking about every piece of music. And Castle Crush and Toxic Tower were among my favorite levels as a kid. They were both so exciting and creepy.
DKC2 is my favorite platformer of all time.

27:56 I feel the difference between dkc and Mario 3 is that Mario 3 very likely didn't have much space for new bosses given there were already so many levels with so many diverse gimmicks and enemies to deal with, while dkc definitely had more than enough wiggle room to make it's encounters something more than a boring contrivance, like how megaman X made it's bosses so much more engaging (even if they also take up more of the game than dkc) Hell, it's surprising that Mario 3 even had unused levels with how much cartridge space they used up. Dkc1's bosses meanwhile still remain at an NES level of complexity and they're so boring for being the end of a world, they barely serve their purpose.
This aside, you've gone on to do a great job at covering the sequel with a few things most don't mention. Hope you covering the third is just as good.
Even people like me who never played this game, love the music in it. the tone of the bramble and spooky forest biomes just invoke instant nostalgia.
Dixie Kong is mah grrl. She is by far and away one of my favorite characters in all of video games. I'm being completely sincere about this.
This was fantastic! Great follow up to last year's dissection. Can't wait to hear your opinions on the controversial DKC3 next. Definitely the inferior sequel but I have a soft spot for it.

DKC3 isn't "controversial". It's just underrated.
Yeah that's a better way to put it. It's just that in my circle, people usually shit on this game because of Kiddy Kong. I always loved the game though.

And yet despite how much more you can justify DKC2 is better... My love of the first DKC is still stronger than any future DKC game. Finished it back in the 90s and numerous times since and enjoy it just as much every time all these years later.

Glad you pointed out the "bonus within a bonus" and the super out of place back tracking required in, I think it was the "Orangutan gang" level in DKC1 in the Vine Valley world... they were both so deliberately out of place and seemingly only added to the game in order to sell strategy guides.
That's not to say that DKC2 didn't have it's fair share of super out of place bonuses/DK coins... but those two instances in the first game were brutal and I definitely would not have found them without a guide/the internet.
Donkey Kong Country 3 - 'When it's Done!
DKC2 will always be my fav SNES game from my childhood even though I only had the GameBoy version called Donkey Kong Land 2.
Never having an SNES really limited my childhood to going over to my friend's places and only being limited to what they had in their collections.
Never had any JRPGs because I lived in PAL region and nobody knew about Secret of Mana or Breath of Fire 2.
But one game I loved most outside of the Mario games was the DKC trilogy and I loved Dixie Kong who played her part in DKC2 being the best character to hover over the large pits with her ponytail spin.

Very good analysis. You mention a lot of very relevant points I have never heard anyone else mention, such as the naturalism of the first game and the 'weight' mechanic of Donkey in DKC1, which I find not only incredibly satisfying during gameplay, but also miss in the second game. Well done!

I know DBD will still continue to be your main focus, but I think it's definitely something to consider when GT starts to wind down a bit.

Although it's also one of my favorite SNES games, I have to agree with you. The Banana Coins are totally unnecessary ! I don't remember that Mario collects coins to save his progress and get extra lives in the main games.

Donkey Kong *is* Donkey Kong jr. Grown up. He ditched the wife beater for a tie, had one game and got kidnapped
I'm afraid he's not Donkey Kong Jr., at least not in the context of this trilogy. Donkey Kong is stated, in dialogue in this game, to be Cranky's grandson. And while the idea was abandoned prior to completion, Diddy was originally conceived by Rare to be an updated version of DK Jr.

The 90s were a great time! Great game great story. Great twist on capturing donkey Kong. Yet fast forward to today, kill off he-man for a great plot twist and a lot of people complain about it. 🤦🤦🤷🤷

Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong though. What does make his comment aboot the main character should a big bulky guy a very funny comment, as he no longer is big or bulky nor he was the main character of his own games.

The current DK is Cranky's grandson, so he's not Donkey Kong Junior.

There have definitely been some inconsistencies in the Kong family tree over the decades across various media, but in the DKC trilogy itself, their relationship is pretty rock solid. From the DKC manual: "(Donkey Kong) groggily rolled over to see the familiar wrinkled, white-bearded, grouchy face of his old graddad 'Cranky Kong' peering down at him." From the ending of DKC2: "You've rescued that lazy grandson of mine, and dumped K. Rool in his own filthy swamp. Not bad for a novice!"
@@MistareFusion retroactive continuity means that whatever he was then he's his son now. Though I'd argue he was always his son. If he was his grandson then it wasn't because DK Jr went out for smokes and never came back, but because his parents weren't named donkey kong
The modern DKC games also maintain that they are grandparent and grandchild. Donkey Kong Jr. has continued to exist as a separate character in games, even after the invention of the modern Donkey Kong. There is no retroactive continuity, just a handful of inconsistencies based on a lackadaisical attitude to storytelling. But the overwhelming majority of media throughout the decades have been in agreement about this. If you prefer to take the side of media that posits them as father and son, that's totally valid. However, I'm reviewing the game within its context. Within this particular story, they are explicitly grandparent and grandchild, so I'm going to be referring to them as such and analyzing the story at its word. When I get to DK64, it's going to be different, and I will likewise handle it according to its context.
