- Welcome back to the channel! Today we take a look at another iceberg and today we are diving into the original Donkey Kong Country on Super Nintendo. We take a look at stuff behind the scenes, cut content, and much more throughout this iceberg. I made this iceberg just for this video borrowing ideas from other icebergs along with my knowledge of the game and other mysteries surrounding it. Well, I certainly didn't expect this video to open with the Mexican commercial for this game narrated by Gus Rodríguez and on-screen appearance of his son Javier.
The thing I find fascinating with the preproductions of these great games is how they “trim the fat” to make the games less of a chore. Like the Animal Buddies cage one: it would’ve been way more annoying and less rewarding if you have to jump through hoops (finding a key) just to use an Animal Buddy for that one stage.

Until DK 64, King K. Rool wasn't really supposed to be a "king" in a permanent sense. He was just a master of disguise who adopted a different persona in every game. So in the second he's not called King, he's just "Kaptain K. Rool" and then in the third he's "Baron K. Roolenstein." But then in 64 he becomes "king" again. I kind of resent that, if feels like later developers forgot the original intent of the character which reflects how DKC1 became the only game anyone remembered, with the lore of the other two games ignored.
I agree, Donkey Kong Country 2 is my favorite Donkey Kong game and that's large part due to the theming and Kaptain K. Rool's presence, and besides a reference in DK64 and I think a trophy or two in smash bros they really don't mention him or Baron after DK64, it really is a shame. Even newer K Rool iterations mainly focus on his King persona in Mario Baseball and Smash. Worst part is I hardly noticed the through line of K Rool adopting several different disguises, imagine what we might've had if they kept that canon going. Re-using the bosses is simply due that albeit huge space at the time, -the 32Mbit cartridge could not hold any more data.
Yoshi's island original art -style was rejected by Nintendo, but the art -style found on final release was approved.
During early days of Yoshi's Island development, Nintendo was indeed pressuring Miyamoto to go for DKC -style, when Shigeru wanted the make unique looking game instead. So Miyamoto san was pissed of by Nintendo itself, not Rare.
The Manky situation is strange. Manky is an Orangutan. Diddy, and some others on the other hand, are either chimps or some other sort of monkey. Manky is more closely related species wise to the great apes of the DK crew.
What's also strange, is that he was overly aggressive with his barrel throwing. Now thats not too unnatural considering great apes and monkeys in general are also aggressive . So why exclude him?
There's some got'damn deep seated Orangutan racism going on here no doubt.

The pre-rendered art style was unique to DKC... on the SNES, at least.
Yoshi's Story totally takes the same approach, and still looks really good today, imo.
Really cool video dude!👍 On a side not while Wario didn't use a futuristic gun to turn Mario into stone he DID use a futuristic gun to turn Ness into a trophy in SMASH and Mario was turned into a statue by Bowser in the SMW comics; so maybe that's how those ideas ultimately ended up being used. Either way we still have DK to thank for inspiring those ideas and I'm betting that's why Bowser attacked Donkey in Subspace Emissary. That or revenge for DK always getting the vest of him through out the Mario Party series, but that's just MY theory.🤔

When it comes to the reused bosses, the game boy advanced version did those bosses justice. They also added a bit into existing bosses like queen b which now had zingers surrounding it that had to be defeated before you got to damage her.

also where is the iceberg? this is just kinda a list, one of the fun parts of these is to see the iceberg first and then understand it later
I didn't really mention it in the video but I made up this iceberg myself just for the video, and I didn't craft an official iceberg in tandem with it. There are a few entries I grabbed from other Donkey Kong Icebergs but to my knowledge, there isn't an official iceberg for the first Donkey Kong Country so I just decided to do it in video form. Due to it not being an official iceberg, I felt it was not necessary to format it in layers. Sorry for the confusion

The DEEPEST LORE that you didn't bring up is that the current DK is actually DK Junior (or Junior's son) from DK2 (NES), and that Kranky is actually the original DK from the first Donkey Kong arcade game. Looks like whatever foul concoction Stanley the Bugman sprayed at him in DK3 (NES) did a real number to him and left him all shriveled up...
Personally, I just think rare didn't change back DK Juniors design back because they couldn't be bothered making a 3D model again and Nintendo just decided to be petty and not use dk jr anymore outside of super Mario kart, the first 2 Mario tennis games, Mario kart tour and few cameos here and there. Honestly if I could have it my way. I'd have both Diddy and DK Jr still around.

I personally don't believe Miyamoto ever made the "mediocre gameplay" comment. And he did work on the game despite it being primarily developed by Rareware. He is credited as the game's Producer. The choice to use a different art style for Yoshi's Island was due to an early demo using pre-rendered 3D graphics "lacking punch" according to Nintendo's marketing department. The cutscenes being done with pre-rendered graphics is the last holdover of that style.
Rare at one point we’re thinking about making Donkey Kong Country 4 for the Nintendo DS !

The beta designs shown in the DK Jr section are so cartoony. I don't think it's like a good or bad thing they were made a bit more grounded but it is jarring.

How did we have fun with this game as children? There's a lot of minutiae unpacked in this short video alone that I never made use of in my time with the game as a small child. Didn't know the different attacks were of varying strength. Nor that Diddy was weaker than Donkey.

The donkey Kong in donkey Kong country is cranky Kong's grandson, cranky Kong has been confirmed as the original donkey Kong. So the donkey Kong in donkey Kong country is dk Jr's son, yet oddly enough red tie dk III is bigger than his dad lol.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that quote is bullshit. It's not great form to look at a random "quote" that never was confirmed and was explicitly denied by the person "quoted" and just go: "eh, it sounds like something he would have said"
