Nascar lives in the grey area. They blatantly make rules up and decide when they want to follow the established ones on the spot. It's part of the reason why viewership has gone down over the years.

"Are we buildin' this sport up or are we tearin' it down?" That is the ultimate question Dale. Right now it's crumbling to the point where I have a hard time bringing myself to even watch every weekend. Thinking 'what BS are we gonna have to see or hear now?' When I saw the empty seats scattered along the frontstretch at Texas I tend to believe some people are thinking the same thing. Also, ticket prices are getting ridiculous.

Ticket pricing has gone down but okay. You are tearing it down. You can have opinions but when you stop watching then your opinion doesn't matter.
Also... It's still racing. Stage racing only made them race harder.

    • @wolverineprime2886
      @wolverineprime2886 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Prices have gone down? Not from what I've seen. Maybe if you want a seat in the nosebleeds. They might throw in a discount on them. From what I saw for prices at Texas it seems you have to save up for a year ahead of time to just go to one race. Excuse me if I don't make 70k+ a year like some do. Cheaper to watch at home. From what I saw at Texas must be quite a few more people agree.

My dad was like many others and always said " Never bite the hand that feeds you."
As far as deliberate cautions it has been happening ever since (at least) when I was racing motorcycles in 1970 and I would have to guess long before that.

So I got called in I think in 98’ or 99’ and was taught a valuable lesson. The big cheese made it clear. They don’t care what I do to my car but it can’t be obvious!” I was told “if you sit on the pole week after week, the press will catch on eventually and then they will start asking questions which will force us to RIP YOUR CAR APART BEFORE THE RACE” . - It was actually hilarious. Because he said in a (dirtysouth- southern accent) “I don’t care if yall install some of those new high-technologies compuuuhhhters in and have that damn car doing back flips down the straight away! But don’t you dare have that car jumping the catch fence during practice, qualifying, then turn around and do it in the race!” - other words what he meant was. Either be fast at qualifying and run middle pack during the race. Or qualify 7-15th and win the race. But don’t be just blatantly making it obvious your up to NOO good. - I learned all the series will let you get away with a lot as long as it doesn’t become there problem! Hence Media asking questions about your car or on track activities. Then they have to do something so the series doesn’t appear like it lets people do whatever they want. - you lose credibility with sponsors and they don’t wanna pay millions to be in a race they know they don’t stand a chance winning. Gary Nelson’s job was to clean it up to make it more attractive on the business side.

Changes done after the qualifyings automaticly send teams to the back.

I remember a Datyona 500 where Buckshot Jones was backwards in the first few laps. On live TV Buck Baker made some comments about Buckshot Jones in the Double O car doing exactly what we expected him to do this early in the race.
Jr, I so often agree with you but this one I have to say funny is funny. Yes that would have been what fans expacted back in the 80's and 90's. Drivers would throw down on each other hard. Like Dale Sr said at Britsol I just wanted to rattle his cage. This one not quite a drive roast but there was a saying that rubbin is racin. Now rubbin is a fine, two weeks off and loss of points. I do not feel that comments like Dale Sr wrecks everyone or Terry Labonts cant drive a nail, or Ervin has to work for the phone company to get on a pole, the fastest thing on Lake Speed is a pedal boat would have ever come ascross as personal. The fans would have loved it your dad would have made t shirts and the track would have had to build more seats next year so the fans could read the big screen. Now your pissed off for someone else. NASCAR needs some rough edges, thats what made them what they were. Now I can sit on the I 77 overpass and see more action , passing and bumping. They sport is so sterile that you can do open heart surgry in Victory lane.

Always wondered about not only the capabilities but also the possibilities of having "Teams" . A driver that's in the hunt for the championship and/or the playoffs had a teammate that is either locked in or no chance of making it... causing a yellow or intentionally wrecking a driver to further the other teamates chances.
Oddly enough you don't see or hear about scenarios like that. I'm sure that it's happened dozens of times throughout the years but nowadays with how the racing format is you would think it be more prevalent.
I'm not sure that I got my point across but would love to hear drivers talk about these scenarios if they have indeed presented themselves.

i disagree regarding intentional spins. it's a part of racing that needs to be policed and severely deterred. it ruins a good race and diminishes efforts by others, especially the car owners and teams. cautions are the great equalizer. make the penalty outweigh the crime, and the crime will cease to exist. sitting out 2 races and a hefty fine, would stop this kind of selfish stupidity. but nascar loves drama, and feel everyone does too. they need to rule with an iron fist, to stop drivers from acting like a bunch of spoiled brats and sore losers. it hurts the racing image. it needs to be about racing, not racing entertainment. adopting some FIA protocols would a step in the right direction. this is just my opinion though. thank you Dale Jr for this show. i thoroughly enjoy it. P.S. i have a bunch of old Circle Track magazines from the '80's, '90's. if you are missing any issues in your collection, give me a list and i'll send them if i have them. cheers.

I agree, Nobody is a mind reader and you cant penalize drivers not knowing their true intentions when racing hard. Also I went to the Texas race a couple years back in the late 90's and I saw fans had made up signs that were way too personal directed at Jeff Gordon and I'm not a fan of Jeff's, but there are lines crossed that never should be!

Those calls have to be made right then. Its not like F1 where you can get a 5 second penalty and drop 1 spot. NASCAR should be able to do that because a drivers morality isnt going to effect it, just my take

The only reason I disagree with a driver approaching another driver about an intentional spin is: How would the driver spinning himself out even know that he is affecting someones long run or whatever it may be that he is damaging? Drivers like Bubba are so far behind that they are lucky to know where their own car is running let alone anyone else in the field. I can hear Bubba and his spotter now saying: "I HAVE A FLAT! WELL DON'T SPIN OUT ON PURPOSE CAUSE YOU WILL MESS UP KYLE BUSCH'S DAY" LMAO!!!

I am a huge Dale Jr fan and i agree with his looks on things way more then i do nascars but bubba Wallace isn't racing forba championship he is Racing for his Job and lively hood!!!!! You have to do what you have to do for your teams best interests like Logano done the week before it was gonna cost Logano points which is super IMPORTANT but no matter what he will be back in the 22 next year with whatever happens but more importantly bubba wallace could lose his ride forever so i race myself and i feel personally the guys that are winning right now is the ones that have GREAT equipment and jobs for next year but if i was in bubba Wallace's shoes i am going to do whatever it takes to stay active in the cups series and keep my job!!!!!

Dale Junior should drive for Tony Stewart. I think he would be awesome driving a Ford for Stewart Haas racing. I know he likes Chevy's but let's just say he drives a Ford and some how wins lots of races more then he did in a Chevy then I just wonder what his outcome or what he would think at the end of the day. I mean Mark Martin and other drivers that maybe were diehard Ford guys went to driving other brands and at the end of day Brands never really mattered anymore because they just loved racing overall. Your personal vehicles can still be the brand you really like and still race a different brand.

It's shouldn't be a black and white or whatever thing with Bubba, it should be the safety and lives of the driver's the pit crews the safety crews and even the Nascar officials that are over the wall in harm's way❗Have a sit down meeting with all the driver's pit crews owners , and lay down the law❗ Have them all vote on who should out of the driver's maybe even the pit crews (the over the wall gang!) be that confronts the possible offender or offenders and go from there!

Sorry, just subscribed but wanted to comment regarding "Bogus Cautions". There is nothing more frustrating than watching NASCAR throw a bogus caution late in the race to protect the leader, or strongest car, from being taken out of contention due to unforeseen incidents. Whether it be a flat tire for example that puts the "Chosen One" back in the pack or a lap down, or pitting right before a legitimate caution causing the loss of a lap. This strategy by NASCAR is bullshit to say the least, and painfully obvious and insulting to seasoned race fans.
I was as at a race in Fontana in 2018(?) when Kyle Busch, admittedly my all time least favorite driver, lost a lap or dropped back in the pack for a reason my alcohol laden brain can't remember, late in the race. Of course there was a "mystery debris" caution that allowed him not only his lap back but the eventually the win.
This practice, among others is the cause of me no longer being a NASCAR fan. Jr., when you retired I stopped watching Cup racing. The very First race I watched was the Winston race where Mr. Earnhardt made the "Pass in the Grass". I was hooked. When he passed away in 2001, I gravitated to you not because of you name, but because of you personality and driving ability. I have no idea how his death affected you as a son and a racer, but you took on WAY more than you should ever have had to, and handled it like no one could ever have imagined.
But, the single incident that killed my interest in Cup Racing was when Kyle Busch, again he makes me want to puke every time I see him bow to the crowd after a win as if he did it ALL HIMSELF, broke his leg in the Busch race at Daytona before the 500. In the real racing days, the driver would climb in the car, take the green and pull to pit road for a relief driver to secure the points from the race. It's such NASCAR Bullshit that he was allowed to compete, and win the Championship that year because of the Chase (don't even get me started on the Chase). I watched Dale Earnhardt race with a broken fuckin sternum among other inuries...and qualify on the pole at Watkins Glen so he could get his points. Davey Allison drove with a broken fuckin collar bone, where they had to velcro his hand to the shifter so he could get his points. I've see the pics of Ricky Rudd driving Daytona 500 with band aids holding his swollen eyes open after flipping during the Clash. It all became driven by the almighty dollar. Fill seats and sell merchandise.
Die hard racing fans like me watched week in and week out for the racing. Remember when they talked about biased ply tires and staggering?!!! Sunday's race has just become a survival of the fittest. If your driver is not running in the top 5, you're not going to hear about him all day. During the broadcast where we used to follow the pit stops to see what adjustments were made to your driver's car, we now see multiple commercials. NASCAR has become all about the money and not about the racing. I miss the good ole days, but at least I got my Sundays back. I know you are, or were, a commentator for NBC. I don't hold it against you. You are one of the funniest motherfuckers I've ever heard, and I'll bet your description of the race is something to behold.
Ok, that thud you heard was my fat ass hopping off my soap box. Just wanted to vent my frustration at losing my favorite pastime. Love your Podcast and look forward to catching up on old episodes as well as the new.

This is what happens when you have playoffs in racing, drivers who really aren't part of the Chase may mess it up for others. It's like a team that knocks you out of the Final Four, they aren't going to help those drivers do that. There was never any reason for a playoff in racing in the first place because of so many competitors and the mechanical elements as any ill-timed caution or mechanical problem will take you out of it.
