I wish my dad only had sandals on instead of those 2 inch thick wooden slipper things he wore at home. Hear him coming down the stairs and us kids would just shush up and behave. Mom also had wooden shoes, but they made a higher pitch when walking around, so stress levels didn't quite skyrocket as high.
I mean the physical pain or dmg was not really that bad, but enough for a kid to behave and respect authority. Something badly missing almonst a lot of children these days ? Simple things like you greet an older person first, when corssing on a sidewalk. also, the younger person move out of the way of the older one, instead of ramming into them and nearly starting a bareknuckle fight out of nowhere...

It's fun to watch familiar relations from the perspective of a polar opposite culture as mine (Scandinavian). We're so ultra individualistic, actually the most individualistic part of the world, here that families rather *expect* you to have your desires and dreams figured out on your own. Seeing abulita go at that guy with a shoe is like "what is wrong with that woman she's insane" lol. Even the most protective members of my family like my mom and sis have never been like *that*. And family as one supportive unit is not so common, especially not outside immidiate family, and forget about family forcing you to do something specific, that's almost cause for state intervention lol. Maybe this is why we have a reputation for being cold and resverved. I honestly think while our individualism has positive sides it has also in our case gone too far. I want to see a bigger culture of closeness with ones blood in my country, it is important as a building block of society to have loving and functional families. Now my family is very close but we're also Christian so togetherness is part of our beliefs.

Hopefully they change or improve the family system in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries as I believe the depression, loneliness would go down. Yes i know climate takes a tool but society is also a big problem and I dont want my child to grow with the individualistic mentality and its sad when he has experienced his other family where we are close and support through thin and thick.

I come from a mixed family my grandpa was Mexican and my grandma American. We had a lot of arguments about things and spoke in Spanglish in the house (half a sentence in English the other half in Spanish, or sometimes just one word from the other language). The flip-flop/slipper being used as a weapon is known as “la chancla”. Whenever a Latina gets pissed off at anyone they tend to throw it or use it to whack you. I think this happens in many cultures but yea…it’s a chancla.

So many people now put up altars or offrendas to their family and friends who have passed away. My grandmother (my fathers mom) taught me how to put the pictures, flowers, favorite food etc to my family when I was like 7 years old and I still do it many moons later.
Thanks so much for this reaction. ❤️

This movie has a great messege that no one seems to catch, (no se muere el que se va, solo se muere el que se olvida) "those who leave this earth are not the ones who really die, those who really die are the ones who get forgatten" a very famous latin american saying

Haha my mom's the same Ash she always sleeps 5 mins into any movie but god bless her she works so hard in her housework, so we just let her. And we end up telling her the story anyway after the movie is over. Ah this was such a good pick too. The end when Miguel sings to Mama Coco always gets to me. It makes me miss all my grandparents who have passed in my lifetime. I miss them dearly. They all died before I grew up and was able to have conversations with sense. I often think about what kind of shenanigans I would have with them if they were still alive. Also man your family is lovely you all look great. Thank you for the reaction.

Respectfully, as a Mexican American born/raised by Mexican immigrants in Los Angeles, California, her sandals are called 'chanclas' and my mother, my aunties, my grandma and pretty much any old lady in Mexico will use their chanclas like a weapon, to threaten you when you are being naughty. Mostly, they throw it at you, but I swear to god, those things find their ways AROUND corners just to slap you in the forkin face. Even grown ass Mexican men still fear la chancla.
Later in the movie, she throws her chancla at Dante, and then volun-tells Miguel to go get it for her. Not to mention, when she offers Miguel more food, and he's like 'nah I'm good' and how she takes that as a personal offense, I felt that for real. You NEVER tell a Mexicana that you don't want to eat no more. They will find a way to feed you... they will find a way. Always.

This movie came out just at the time my Dad passed away. I love this Mexican tradition. The thing Disney missed is the Monarch Butterfly. These yellow and orange colors are symbolism of the Monarch Butterfly. Its migration is at the time of the Day of the Dead. The butterflies are dead ancestors ( dead babies in some villages) coming to visit. Symbolism

27:49 Well we don't know if she got rid of any sign of him after he left or after the letter we later found out he was writing home stopped - it could've been that she was angry that he left at all and so threw out his letters but that Coco smuggled them back in and keep them hidden or it could've been that the kept writing to them but then when they stopped Imelda thought that he'd left them behind. In any case, that's what she a some point was also concerned about food on the table re why she learned how to make shoes. When Miguel was asking why no one on the family could ever support him I understood him but a little bit of me was thinking 'Who did Imelda have to support her? You think she wouldn't have known what everyone in the town would've said about her, either sympathising with her or mocking her for being what they probably would've seen as a young foolish girl who lost her head over a musician who abandoned her and their daughter? You'd want her to go home to her parents and ask for help the rest of her life? She may have had dreams of her own. But she putt them aside. She stayed. She worked. She did anything she could to ensure that she and her daughter had food on a table and a roof over their heads and clothes on their backs." But Miguel still made a good point.
