Agreed Dorian was the better bodybuilder as far as bodybuilding judging is concerned however Shawn’s look was far more pleasing and was overall just better but that’s just my opinion because in reality he was never better then Dorian Even though Dorian wasn’t around then I remember seeing Shawn in 1999 and thinking my favorite bodybuilder ever is going to win this in Flex Wheeler then seeing Shawn then plus his posing routine was just incredible like the pure wow factor and it hurt as I though he’s going to beat Flex & Ronnie it’s deserved though full respect but he definitely got done by the judges that year for certain!
I remember this guy from pre internet days where in asia we used to get magazines and I used to like this guy's body pics! really thoughtful notes about life and when to stop and do what is meaningful for yourself.

For me, my favorite physique was Shawn's at the 1997 Mr. Olympia and he got Third that year. For me, it's whatever inspires you and I thought Shawn's physique in 97 and 99 were awesome.
I absolutely think so too. Far superior physique to the likes of a very blocky Dorian Yates. People were & still is preoccupied with huge physiques rather than aesthetics & balance, after all that is what the heart of bodybuilding is isn't it?!
The guy seems to have a bad reputation among other bodybuilders (Lee Priest thinks he's the Son of Satan) and I don't know what that was all about, but he's articulate and great to listen to.....

In hindsight I think Shawn Ray should probably have been awarded the '94 Mr Olympia title, not so much the torn bicep that DY presented, but rather you could just tell DY's waist was more reminiscent of todays problematic bloated guts, obliques not streamlined, pregnant looking etc, all because of a stomach illness I believe. Unfortunately when it came to posing he could control a lot of it, but just standing relaxed he did not look good, whereas Shawn Ray was the complete opposite, polished like no other, absolute perfection. Sometimes I think the slighter guy should win the day over the behemoth with issues, which DY definitely had on that particular outing. There doesn't seem to be a system in place for addressing stuff like this, a problem with the judging system rather than judges I would say, its still a problem today. I know many of us feel the same way about the outcome to that competition, so Shawn... rest easy.. for many of us you are an uncrowned Mr Olympia, you might not have a trophy to signify it, but I know a significant proportion of the fans of the sport feel this way, and that should mean more than a piece of metal on the mantel. And yes, if you were at your best today I believe you'd be winning non stop, your era was incredibly tough.

I am objective, but have always liked Shawn's physique and followed his career. I definitely thought Shawn was robbed at least twice. He definitely should have beat Dorian for the 1996 Olympia.
Dorian was definitely somethin to behold, definitely had the OMG factor. But no question I would rather have Shawn's physique. Both were unattainable, which is part of the WOW, but Shawn Ray's physique was perfect, detailed beyond belief. The only nit-pick one could have is height.

Ronnie was natural in college around 220 lbs. When he started at Metro Flex gym that's when he started using some gear from Brian Dobson gym owner. The reality was Ronnie could not afford all the gear & did not have proper nutrition as he worked a full time job as a police officer plus a couple part-time jobs too. He considered retiring in 1995 as bodybuilding was not making money for him & any money he made from his sponsor Met-rx at the time was just enough money to put back in preparation for his next contest. Not until 1996 from the conversation with Flex Wheeler he was able to work with Chad Nichols to help with his nutrition & have access to more gear to progress rapidly from 1996-1998. From his 1st Mr. Olympia win in 1998 & we all know what happened next as he dominated the Olympia.

Flex Wheeler shoulda been Mr. Olympia. Flex was penalized for not looking the way he did at the Arnold’s Classic earlier in the year Ronnie won his first Olympia. But Flex Wheeler was the guy. Shawn Ray was great, but he wasn’t at that level. The greatest small guys I’ve ever seen were Frank Zane, Flex Wheeler, and Dexter Jackson. Love Shawn Ray, but I thought he was a notch below these guys.

There were many aspects of Dorian's physique which were overshadowed by others in terms of size and mass. Frankly, if Arnold from '73-75 hit a front double-bi next to Dorian hitting a front double-bi, he would make Dorian look like he was buying fake gear. Dorian never had great arms, his back was thick when viewed from the rear but in arms-overhead poses from the front his lats were strangely small. He didn't have that 3D roundness and "pop" of delts, pecs and arms (like Levrone for example) which mean't that some poses were not setting any new standards (by a long shot). Also, his waist was thick and blocky with spilling-over obliques. He did have a unique density and grainy look, but to me that is not a substitute for great structure, proportion, and muscle belly shape. My point is that in many poses he didn't look bigger than other guys so this constant narrative of him "bringing in a new era of mass" is an echo chamber that I don't buy. Perhaps 20 of his supposedly extra pounds-on-the-scale were collected in the area below his nipples and above his cock...and those pounds don't count. When I hear the term "mass monster", I think of Dillett, not Dorian. Even an old Lou Ferrigno made dorian look underdeveloped in certain key upper body areas (and I'm not talking about height). To my eye, Dorian's best bodypart were his calves, but no one ever seems to talk about that.
