Good to see Prabhupad playing the Khol Mridanga. The recording of him singing came out really good at the end too. Swami Vivekananda also used to play Pakhawaj Mridang which was quite surprising. Actually the Pinacle of Mridangam is found in the hands of Palghat Mani Iyer, Karaikudi Mani Iyer and Umayalpuramshivaraman. Pakhawaj is also played at The west coast of India as part of Haveli sangeet, Vaikhari tradition of Vittala Krishna and at Nathadwara for Shrinath Krishna. Pakhawaj is used to accompany Dhrupad and Rudra Veena. The music of Swami Haridas at Vrindavan. All of these schools of Mridanga are equally filled with Bhakti devotion. It would be an immense show of egotism to presume that one school had a better and superior mode of Bhakti than any other. It would be a great injustice to music, to art, to the instrument, the artists who have devoted their entire lives to the instrument, to other sampradayas, to the different forms of Krishna at the other mattas as well as to the deities of other traditions. To the poet saint composer Thyagaraja, to Sant Jnaneshwar, to Muthuswami Dikshitar, to Shyama Shashtri, to Tukaram, Namdev, to Choka mela as well as all those masters who devoted their lives to the worship of their Ishta devata forms and to composing hymns to be accompanied by Mridanga.
