Rob Paulsen voiced Bubsy in that pilot cartoon. A fan asked him if any good came from it. He responded with “the check cleared.” And the fact that Bubsy was brought back from the grave a few years ago with a new game and with talks of another game is just baffling.
I mean, at least Sonic had the analogous connection from hedgehogs rolling into balls to rolling around fast. ...Okay yeah, I guess the Spin Dash makes more contextual sense than any other movement Sonic does.
@@angelo_studios5477to be fair, Knucles' design is so outlandish you can't even tell what animal it is unless someone explicitly tells you, so you don't have any expectations of his abilities. Bubsy is a bobcat, you would expect him to climb walls or use his claws to interact with things, you don't expect him to just glide around.
My favourite Jontron Videos are those from late Season 2/early Season 3 (right before he started using a Studio). Stuff like his takes on Zoo Race, Home Alone Games, Barbie Games or Japanese Shoot em ups.
My favorite era is a mix of that and earlier studio days. I feel like hi recent videos haven’t been as funny(probably cus he can’t pull off as offense jokes).
Jon was peak when it was just him and Jacques in his house looking at weird, horrible games and movies no one's heard about. The modern stuff just doesn't appeal to me.
Some context for those unaware: Bubsy 3D was SUPPOSED to be on the Sega 32x originally, but got moved to the PS1 because that Genesis Add-On failed miserably (plus, Bubsy 3D was in development long before Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot were). That would for sure explain why Bubsy 3D has tank controls, hell it certainly explains why the game itself feels unfinished. Also, that "Gold X Award" bit on the box art? It's a real thing, from the 11th issue of PlayStation Extreme magazine. And there was that EGM quote at the top right of the box art too; "...stunning...original...Bubsy 3D climbs back to the top...check it out!", yeah if it feels like that quote makes no sense, that's because it doesn't. It was actually just bits and pieces taken from the actual review of the game, from issue 88 of EGM, and that was before the game was even out. All a dirty trick to try and sell the game, I guess in retaliation for the EGM review, which was overwhelmingly negative.
bubsy 3d started development before sm64, ended up being released after sm64, and it's still that shit? it's so hard to believe that someone put more than a days work into that garbage heap
@ 4:22 - Fun (?) fact! I have a controller that looks exactly like that. It's a standard controller with a sticker overlay on it. The overlay is of space, the circle behind the buttons is the Earth, and the white behind the D-Pad is the moon. It came free in Nintendo Power magazine back in the 90's, along with a few other designs I can't remember.
I had a Bubsy game as a kid. I don't remember which one or that much about it other than there was a level where I had to navigate an armadillo out of a massive truck engine. It was a really odd game.
I loved Bubsy 1! I had Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, Donkey Kong Country,... I was not starved for jump'n'runs or inexperienced in the genre, but still I thought the game was great. at the time.
Tbh they probably didn't have a big budget most likely they did spend a fuck ton of time on it but when your limited the staff and the money you need and there's a strict deadline it leads to bad games. It's like a good actor can't save a bad script and character.
I posted this in the Discord already, but you guys should really take a look at Nitro Rad's video on Bubsy 3D. He goes into greater detail on how the game got to where it did. 👌
Dude you should check out Matt McMuscles’ What Happened? Video on Bubsy 3D. He does a really good job with his research and explains why Bubsy 3D turned out like it did really well!
Jon made a point about Bubsy 2 and how a child might like it. He was correct. I had a SNES when I was about 5 with Bubsy 2 amongst my collection. I actually enjoyed it because it was silly and the color palette was bright. However as an adult I stand with Jon's take on it. C:
So here’s the reason why Bubsy 3D looks shitty for lack of a better word… Bubsy 3D was made by the video game company Eidetic, and the people in charge of Eidetic, Marc Blank and Michael Berlyn made Bubsy 3D as their first ever platform game. Michael Berlyn used to work for a company called Infocom which was well known for text based adventure games. So that’s the reason why Bubsy 3D looks so bad, Michael Berlyn and Marc Blank had no experience making platform games.
I think one of JonTron's better, non-cartridge game reviews was Banjo & Kazooie Nuts and Bolts for the X-Box 360. Maybe you and Nikki could watch that one sometime?
This was a good lunch break. Nikki and Chad JonTron reaction. This reminded me of his review of the Charlie's angels game. Another old one. But my God, it's an awful game.
IIRC, didn't this series get memed so hard by the entire Gametuber community that they made a new one? Like 5 years ago? Kinda like what happened with Shaqfu?

The "Gold X Award" doesn't actually exist. Accolade made that up to make Bubsy look like a hit.
Psextreme did exist though. The magazines are just very hard to find.
To be fair to Bubsy gliding, it makes about a much sense as a super fast hedgehog.
I mean, at least Sonic had the analogous connection from hedgehogs rolling into balls to rolling around fast.

I like how JonTron complains about Bubsy the bobcat floating, yet we have a red echidna that does the same thing as well as being able to climb walls

I greatly recommend the video "Bubsy 3D - What Happened?" from Matt McMuscles if you have curiosity about how and why this game came to be.

I loved Bubsy 1! I had Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, Donkey Kong Country,... I was not starved for jump'n'runs or inexperienced in the genre, but still I thought the game was great. at the time.
There was also a Bubsy game on Sega Genesis & Atari Jaguar.

All video games can all be amazing. Some have to be garbage to make other games look better by comparison.

Nice Yu Yu Hakusho shirt, my man!
Fun fact, bubsy in bubsy 3d is actually voiced by Lucas' VA from smash
If you liked this video, you should check out SomecallmeJohnny's Bubsy video.
Caddicarus covered Bubsy 3D, and other creators appeared in his video!
Love the Yu Yu Hakusho t-shirt, Chad. I have the same shirt, I see we both shop for clothes at Walmart lol.

I never understood the hate towards Bubsy, I thought it was a pretty neat game, somewhat challenging but fun and cool
Caddicarus and Nitro Rad go more in depth on Bubsy 3D
I miss Rockington :(
Doesn't everyone pour gravy over their skittles?
Nice Yu Yu Hakosho shirt, Chad!
Thank you, Nate has the same one. They have them at Walmart. They have had some sweet shirts recently.
That Yu Yu Hakusho T-shirt is awesome tho
You guys should check out the angry video game nerd (avgn) hes hilarious
