I tried the pen grip drum tip, and it worked extremely well. after a little tweaking and cutting the grips down to size for the felts and toppers, I hear no clanking of the cymbal against the stand. thanks for that
You know the big secret no drummer has seemed to figure out; vinegar ages brass and bronze. Ketchup has vinegar in it. You don't "clean" cymbals with vinegar you age cymbals with vinegar. If you want dark sounding cymbals use vinegar. If you really want to age it faster put more vinegar in the ketchup and that should hold it on there.
I think it is the log with the (end of a dumbell?) metal piece on it. Lance uses the same sort of anvil setup to craft and rework cymbals. Better shot at around 1:13
Yo David, I think you're leaching out the tin from the alloy to leave a more coppery colour. my guess is that the tin is being oxidised by the mixture of acids in the ketchup... not impossible.
In Hungary we had a metal cleaner (it's out of production) called Sidol, and that turned out to be the best cymbal cleaner, if u don't mind losing the logo. It does'nt create any patina look it just cleans it to the original factory look. Neat. You should try a similar stuff in ur country... based on the components...ill look it up if ur interested.
rdavidr it is time to do another bass drum beater video! make a bass drum beater out of bone! Metal AF!!!! ima copy and paste this on all your sheet until you finally do it!
+Petar Pavasović yeah give me some time. I only have so much space (and time) to do one bigger project at a time. so once I get the thing im working on now done and out of the way, ill most likely start on one. no promises!
I really like that rusty, dirty kinda look. Could you do some demos on how patina cymbals sound, and maybe some other things you could use to patina a cymbal?
I did that with my cymbals......and they're pretty cool.....one thing I should have done is I wish I would have left the ketchup on them for a week.I only left it on for 3 days
I’ve always been interested in unconventional forms percussion. Maybe dollar tree drummer could go to the pots and pans section? 🤔 My idea was to make one big rack of different types of percussion that are in rows, and each of them tunes down, left to right (like you would with toms, only... strange percussion sounds, all stacked on top of each other).
Hi nice vid but that room full of old bits and bobs I see has a bass drum peadal in it so if you don't use it I would love to pay you £20-£30 for it. I just got a pearl export seiris drum kit for £95 of eBay but the peadal is falling to bits. Thanks I'm 10.
I used some cymbal cleaner on the top of one of my 2002's a few years back, and after I did that it got all dark brown with green spots. Personally I kind of dig it because I don't like shiny cymbals. Does paiste apply a coating to make their cymbals shiny? Does it affect the sound?
hey David, I saw your april fools video from last year and it actually got me thinking. Would painting a cymbal actually change the sound? I have seen some people actually paint designs on cymbals (Omari Augustine has a nice looking hi-hat that he got painted) but I don't really know what they sounded like before the paint.
+Gausgovy Applying paint to a cymbal will dampen the sounds. It will even drop the spectrum pitch just a little. The Zildjian Pitch Black cymbals are a good example. If you later decide to take the paint off, be very careful as it can actually take the good overtones out and leave you with metal plate.
Is it the layer of oxidation that forms on the cymbal. Usually takes months to years for it to form. It mainly affects the look of the cymbal, and does not affect the tonal quality that much. Some drummers like it, as it adds a nice look to the cymbal.
yeah man you should make the video with the B20 cymbal
What do you think? Would you rock this look?
Nah, the old ketchup look is nasty
nasty
yh I love those mienl byzantiums
How does it sound though?
+Benjamin Uluiva exactly the same it's ketchup ffs
Keep making great videos man! I love your videos more than any other drummer's
Cool idea and video as always Dave. I use and highly recommend the ammonia and salt method as seen on Lance C's cymbal project page.
Patina is sick!
I tried the pen grip drum tip, and it worked extremely well. after a little tweaking and cutting the grips down to size for the felts and toppers, I hear no clanking of the cymbal against the stand. thanks for that
I personally love the look. Now, I'm curious as to what this would do to my 30s-50s Zildjians.
NO!!!

Yeah a b20 patina vid would be dope
@1:57 I saw that.... :P

I think i could like this oldish, dirty look. But I would like to know, did this have any effect on the sound of the cymbal? :)
rip rev

hey man I was not disappointed this is pretty kewl
You should make a bass drum beater out of leather from a drum throne
great sound, great video
see what happens if you sand blast the cymbals

Hey today I got a 18" Sabian B8 crash and a stand for $50. The cymbal looks brand new and sounds great.
That looks so damn good.
It kinda reminds me of the solarize effect in photoshop.
would love to see it with a B20! Nice Video
Hey David, can you make a cajon?
+Petar Pavasović yeah give me some time. I only have so much space (and time) to do one bigger project at a time. so once I get the thing im working on now done and out of the way, ill most likely start on one. no promises!
I have a friend who's also working on cajon, and based on his stories, I think it will be fun to watch one getting made. ;)
Meinl has diy cajon sets. lol.

I Mixed groove juice and ketchup and it Gave my cymbal a patina in an hour
This is so fucking awesome. Cheers!

I want to hear a sound comparison of before and after ketchup!!
Vinegar and flour works to make the cymbal sound dark if you really scrub it I did that with a china \m/
ur not supposed to leave the keychup on for longer than 7 mins, i put ketchup on n rubbed it off immediately after with perfect results
Hey Dave, what was that lube you recommend for threads?
Uh, What would happen, lf I put mustard, On my Say-b-awn Cymbal?
I like it, but I don't feel like throwing ketchup all over my cymbals...
I really want to patina my hats, but I don't think I can go without them for a week. Rats.
But how does it sound!?!?!?!?!?!
Just buy some bronze patina if you want it to go weird colours and sound like a bin lid.
+rdavidr try to patina them during mustard an amonia it works with my modes I bet it would work on cymbals too
129. No. Its just upside down. Turn the cymbal around. Just kidding
I am totally going to ketchup my hihats.
what if you painted a design on the cymbal and then put ketchup on it, leaving a negative of the design? get on it!
Para la pátina del bronce, harina, vinagre blanco y sal.
I'm wondering whether or not doing this to your cymbal affects the sound of it?
try with flour and vinegre then put a week on plastic bag!
DO THE WHOLE CYMBAL LIKE THAT DO IT
You should try mayonnaise next time and bacon with cheese best way to clean them up
the b20 would be cool
not a single shit were given about the look...i want to know does it change the sound...

rose gold cymbal. Jump on it apple
a cheap way I tries that looked crazy was: garbage bag, salt, lemon concentrate. worked very fast (4 to 7 days). way faster than urine ;b
tried...
urine is still cheaper though..
How does it sound? I'd do it if it made my hi hates sound drier.
да просто окислилось, да и всё
get a 5 gallon bucket of ketchup and leave a cymbal in there for a month
why not use a high pressure washer
hello, ketchup ok but how long does it leave on the cymbal (sorry I'm French and very bad in English, I use a translator), thank you.
cool
how to clean a cymbal with metal polish?
It’s gonna be real dry now and dark bro
LanceCampeau (the guy on TH-cam that makes cymbals sound and look different)
How does he make his patina look on cymbals???? Make a video about that
Lysol toilet bowl cleaner. It will be clean in under a minute.

O metal necessita de vibração,
Quanto mais componentes
I want to see it
I'd love to see ketchup on a b20 cymbal
Does anyone know if this will work for b12 cymbals? Like Zildjian ZHT?
coool
Sound?

+Tom Smith im not too sure, i have yet to play on them... even before I did this I hadnt played them lol
It's better if you just remove it after a few minutes! 👌
Try muriatic acid.
wait
COCA COLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! way better!
No offense to you, but I feel like DIY patinas always kinda look like shit. Its like buying new jeans and ripping holes in the knees.
Please reply

what the fuck is "patina"? 🤔
