What constitutes a long drive? For most golfers, they turn to the TV for context. Sadly, the bombs produced by Dustin Johnson and Jason Day aren't realistic standards (even for most pros). Moreover, despite the advances in technology and fitness, 300 yards remains a desired and hallowed target, mainly for one reason: most golfers can't come close to sniffing that distance.
RELATED: Dustin Johnson -- How To Crush Your Drive
Conversely, we continue to hear that escalating distance is becoming a problem, to the point where the USGA is starting to take steps to curb this supposed issue.
So, how far do average golfers really hit it?
Thanks to the folks at Game Golf, we finally have an idea.
Game Golf Live, a wearable real-time shot-tracking system that received Golf Digest's Editors' Choice for Best Game Analyzer, provided data regarding the average driving distance from rounds played in 2016 (April to September). Breaking it down in two divisions -- age and handicap -- here are the median driving distances from golfers across the world:
At its core, the median driving distance is 219.55 yards. Other club distances of note: the median 3-wood goes 186.89 yards, 7-iron clocks in at 133.48 yards and pitching wedge at a 73.97 mark. For what it's worth, golfers find the fairway 46.46 percent of the time.
Sure, the biggest yardage number (250) may seem puny -- especially when Henrik Stenson is outdriving that figure by 40 yards with his 3-wood -- but those stats are nothing to deride. However, it does illustrate that, while average golfers are getting it out there, worries about rising distances ruining the game are overblown (at least at the amateur level).
Of course, these figures are just for show. The only number that really matters resides at the end of your scorecard.

I agree a million percent! I am 47 and used to be so concerned with how far everything went, as I got older, I realized distance is great, but only off the tee for me. I could care less if I have to hit a 6 or a 7 iron to the green from 150. Swinging slower and smoother, I will score way better than trying to hit everything far. To heck with those marketing ploys.

I hit a drive 200 yards on the average fairway. On one course I recently played I found that I could not play a par 3 because it is over a lake that required a carry of more than 190 yards. I can't do that even with a driver. A friend talked me into taking lessons from a teaching pro. After about a half dozen lessons and a recommended driver change, I seemed to be driving the ball about 2 yards farther, once I got used to the club.

I'm 57 and took up golf seriously for the first time almost exactly 1 year ago. Prior to February 2017 I'd played twice in 30 years. Since then I've played about 100 rounds. My calculated handicap is about 22.
I started tracking my scores and distances on SwingXSwing about 6 months ago so I think I have pretty good data. Here are my distances:
    Driver - Average 201Y; Longest 263Y (227 shots tracked)
    3W - Avearge 167Y; Longest 254Y (100 shots tracked)
    5W - Average 153Y; Longest 201Y (36 shots tracked)
    5I - Average 137Y; Longest 174Y (37 shots tracked)
    6I - Average 126Y; Longest 172Y (39 shots tracked)
    7I - Average 115Y; Longest 167Y (23 shots tracked)
    8I - Average 113Y; Longest 153Y (33 shots tracked)
    9I - Average 102Y; Longest 141Y (49 shots tracked)
    PW - Average 73Y; Longest 127Y (21 shots tracked)
By the way, I leave out shots where I totally shank/mishit it. Seems like including those would skew the numbers down and make them not useful in deciding what club to hit. Maybe that's wrong, but it seems right to me.

It seems a little conterintuitive though, in that it seems like you'd lose some clubhead speed. But I think I'll try it. If I can get used to it, it might simplify mattrs a bit. About a month into golfing at age 47 (6' / 245 lbs). I prefer the 3 Wood over the Driver (better control). I usually strike about 170 to 185 yards with reliable accuracy. Enough to eat up some yards down the fairway where I can switch to the irons (the stronger part of my game so far). Also, practicing with the hybrid off torn up grass at the driving range has helped a lot. I now find it much easier to get good strikes with the hybrid off the fairway.

Still not incredibly accurate, but Im learning to hit a consistent draw with it so my misses are usually a draw or a baby hook to the right. (im lefthanded). Golf is all about consistency, and especially consistency in actually playing the game. More than once a week. Im getting down to the low 80's. Have yet to shoot an 80. But Ill get there. The key is to lose less shots, make smart plays and take out variables in your game and decision making. Good luck out there!

I started golfing recently and a couple times I can confidently say I got the ball out 280 yards on a straight hole. Today I was within 2 feet of a hole in one on a 380 par 4. It had a severe dog leg to the right which I know can make 380 yards into alot less if you decide to use Pythagorean therom. Best shot of my life so far. Yes I made an eagle. And usually I average 104 on a par 72. I'm no hot shot but likes I've heard before "it's that one shot that keeps you comming back" and boy is it true.

When you get older, play from the Whites and swallow your pride and score better. It’s so hard to hit an accurate second shot for over 240 yards when you’re playing from the tips. When I was younger, I could fade or draw a 3W that far, now I can’t even reach the green from that distance. Father Time is undefeated and so is the game of golf! When we say we hit the ball X yards, we typically mean our average drive excluding mishits. Those of us failing to break bogy golf mishit the majority of our drives. So our average drive is a shank, scull, slice etc. This is why you often hear someone say they hit the ball 270 yards. In reality, they do in fact hit 270 every once in a while, but most of their drives being mishits are under 200 yards. This I think is the biggest reason for the disparity in distance between the averages reported here and what people think they hit [not people exagerating]

Sure you do. I would suggest if you hit those distances consistently then you'd be somewhat lower than 13 (by the way, what is 'around a 13 handicap'?). I'm long off the tee with driver and carry 245 - 255 yards - yes in club golf that is long. I'm not long with irons and hit 105 wedge and 137 (average) 7 iron, 4 hybrid 170 - 185 depending on shot type. I'm off 6 and dropping largely because I'm honest about distances.
Think a lot of people get confused between the distance they could occasionally hit a club when flushed versus what they achieve on average with an average strike. Calibrating on the average strike helps scores come down.

But now, I can't walk anymore, weak core in my lower back. My average good drive is 210 and have lost 20 yards on my long irons. Surprisingly I haven't lost as much distance from my 8 iron on down; I still hit the PW 120 and the AW 113. Now THAT puts things in perspective. Great post. I was very surprised to see the distance for the single-digit handicapper. I suppose most of them aren't playing on courses of 7000+ yards as the pros, so that evens out. It almost sets up a point for the governing bodies to leave the amateur game alone, and if they were to put the kabosh on something, let the PGA Tour set its own restrictions.

This is probably right. You always read golfers saying I hit my 7 iron 186 yards. Yeah, right dude. Then how come I always kick your butt on the golf course? According to this the AVERAGE 7 iron is 133 yards. The AVERAGE pw is 74 yards. That sounds about right. Ever watch folks at the driving range? I take a Wedge (blade) to the park with my dog. I hit the wedge a hour a day to maybe 90 minutes. A really good hit with the wedge, with me compressing the ball, goes about 90 yards. Now wait, before you laugh, these are beat up practice balls, and it's off the grass, and this is some rough grass. Not near as nice as a golf course. If you don't know what i mean when I say I compress the ball, then you haven't done that. It's a very distinct feeling and sound. If you aren't compressing the ball with your wedge, it's doing the average WITH CARRY at 74 yards. ;-) If you are compressing the ball it JUMPS off the face and you will definitely get additional distance. My 2 cents.

This seems to be fairly accurate. In summer I try to play 2-3 times per week depending on work, other commitments and I am about a 14 handicap been playing for about 12 years. I’ve only broken 80 #7 times and typically on 18 shoot 82-87. Because of the magical 300 yard drive I am consider a short hitter with avg drive 230-240. My 8 iron is 140-150 and anything below I 5 iron I have a 3 hybrid 19 degree I can hit 185 yards. I do wish I could get more distance from my driver, but understand I am basically a weekend golfer which to be able to break 80 a time or two I am happy with.

I'm 68 and I care mostly about the yardages my pitching wedge thru 7 iron go. Teaching myself I've only recently been able to get 100+ yds with my pitching wedge. 9 iron about 111 yds, 8 iron about 124yds and 7 iron about 135 yds. My driver gets between 190-225 yds and I don't know what my 3 wood gets as long as I can keep it straight for my 2nd shot on par 5's. I struggle with 150-200yds into the green. And If I have to carry 150+yds to get over water or sand I lay up. Golf has been a wonderful game for me and a test to keeping myself fit to play well. The part that I really find fun is managing my shots on the golf course. Oh I'm a 16 handicap and can play as well as an 8 hcp when the sun and the moon align for a Gemini approach. That means my putts are rolling in. We must remember, "drive for show/putt for dough".

The problem with the "new" longer distances being hit is that at the highest levels of golf, the courses are being made obsolete. Fairway bunkers have become non-factors. Par 5s can be reached with second shot 7-irons. For the weekend golfer, that is not the situation. But the concern does not focus on the weekend golfer. .

Age is not an issue. I was stronger at 55 than I was ever. I squatted 611 and bench pressed 401 in my 40's, and squatting 804 and benched 451 in my mid 50's. Because of spurs from bad cliff diving, football, and bar fights the spurs in my shoulder caught up and I had to have 2 shoulder surgeries, the second to fix what the 1st doctor screwed up. I was still getting stronger up until my shoulder surgeries and haven't trained to determine if I am as strong as I am now 61. The difference in a young man and older man's strength is determined by how high his testosterone us and the wear and tare on the body, especially the back. You can inject testosterone in your ass, leg or shoulder. Swing speed is determined by a combination of strength and flexibility. I hit my driver 270 when I could not squat 500 lbs, or 225 kilos, 250 yards when my squats went over 500 lbs, 230 yards when I was squatting 600 lbs, and 200 yards was a damn good drive when I squatted over 800 lbs or 370 kilos. I man don't lose testosterone from age near as much as he does from lack of exercise

Most players seriously over estimate their driving distance, I'm not very big...5'8" 160 lbs, but I'm a 4 handicap so I'm a pretty good ball striker and my drives are typically about 250, 255 but I can hit it longer when I want/need to. Last week I walked on as a single and got paired with two gentlemen. I asked them which tees they wanted to play (white or blues), as I didn't want to play a different tee and they said they had never played the course and asked what I thought and I ask them how far they usually hit their drives. One answered about 230 and the other answered 250, so though they could have played the Blues with those distances I kinda guessed what was coming so suggested we play the whites and said we can move back if it is too short...I never saw either one hit a drive over 225 yds and most were around 200.

When they then hit a driver the trackman actually called out the exact carry distance. None of the eleven golfers I saw being fitted could carry it more than 220. Half were carrying it about 190. Almost all of them said that the trackman was faulty.

The reason the numbers for irons especially are weirdly low is because amateurs hit terrible shots, where the ball goes 5 yards as they hit it fat, or top it or thin it... There is no way a well struck (for amateurs) pw is going 74 yards, but when you factor in the fluffed shots etc then yes this is possible... plus game golf counts shots that were not full shots. If you are 50 yards from the green and you use PW then it is going to be on your stats. So IGNORE the PW number

Having had a good laugh at some of these comments I would like to inject a serious note. These averages prove that the R&A/USGA ruling to ban "hot face" drivers was a complete fiasco. Even with more advanced equipment distance for the average golfer is not even coming close to rendering the vast majority of courses obsolete. In fact, these stats show that there is a strong case for having one set of standards for amateurs and one for professionals. The two sets of players are so different that it borders on the unfair to impose restrictions that limit distance on average golfers. I would go as far as to say the same thing about restrictions on spin.

240-250 on your drive is solid. You should be shooting a lot lower than 19. Some short game practice will help. Also, practice more often with your wedges. No more than 30-40 yards, That'll eliminate the chunking.

I'm pretty sure that golf is a game of counted strokes, adding penalties (including clock time) and adjusting by handicap and course slope. The scorecards I use have no space for yards hit. Ive played with young people who hit farther but they play the back tees. I've also played with a wheel chair bound double amputee who shot target golf without a rangefinder and once shot 79 on the old course when they began allowing carts. I don't think he ever referred to his driving distance as accuracy was more important to him.
By the way I like your videos. They are entertaining. If you add wind allowance into your formula for "breaking" certain scores I might find them more useful. Keep up the good work.

Im 46 with a current hndp of 9 and I average during the summer months 280. Thats mostly carry too. Not much role with these new drivers. I used to hit a slight draw and get a few more yards with role but now these drivers dont have any lines and it seems more difficult to hit the draw like I used to. So I just hit a pretty straight line now when I have room to bomb one. If its tight then I hit a slight fade about 265-270 give or take. Its funny too because Im only 5'8" and my tall friends cant stand it. Something that helped me alot was a tool called the swingbyte. It clips on any club even putter and gives you tons of data including swing speed. Its pretty accurate. I hit the tracman alot and the numbers are close. It does Swing plane, attack angle, swing path, face angle at start, at impact, ball flight projection and alot more. Also a full replay of the swing with tracking lines. Also on the app or website you can do side by side comparison with professional swings. Cheers!

The SINGLE BIGGEST tip I can give to any amateur golfer is to IGNORE OTHER PEOPLES DISTANCES. Instead, get to know the AVERAGE CARRY distances you hit each individual club you have in your bag. (Total distances vary too much). Once you have warmed up, start with atleast 15 balls per club, and do this over different days, so you get data from days where you might not be hitting 100%. I don't know any pros who can say they feel 100% every day they play, and that is for damn sure accurate for amatures. Work on specific yardages for each club, so you can confidently approach your second shot into a par 4 or 5 knowing your base numbers, so you can quickly calculate for wind and elevation. In the end there are no prizes for coming up short on approach shots. Hit more GIR (adjusted for your handicap) and you will give your scrambling/short game a break from those 20 yard chip and run shots. Also note that pros rarely swing over 90% of their maximum swing speed, most good iron players work on a repeatable 80-90%. Irons are for hitting specific distances. Driver is no better than a 3 wood if you keep missing fairways due to swinging out of your shoes with no control... Trust me, you'll shave more stokes doing this than you'll even do just working on crushing your drives...

I’m a legit 36.4 handicapper and hit my driver 250m at 16, this is my first year... my short game is where I fail big time

These numbers are way the hell off for me at least. I'm 24 and 14 handicap. Not trying to rip the ball, my PW starts at 140 and add 10 yards for each iron up. My hybrid carries 200 easy and driver carries 250 and they run out much further. These numbers they have reflect swing speeds of an average female golfer it seems like.

140 is really good for a PW. That's my distance and I am a single digit player. It's a wide net including low and high handicappers. Young and old. Thanks for tuning in brother.

I am wildly inconsistent with my driver but I hit it between 200-250 when I make solid contact. And my 7 iron is more like 150, while my pitching wedge is 100-110.

These numbers are about right. I've been playing a long time, my carry is around 225. My golf partner hits about 10 yards shorter. He usually beats me into the green with a good second shot, driving is not the end all in golf.

I'm 62 now and still hit it 280-320. Of course I'm 6'7" and use a 7 degree driver. Oddly, my mid-range irons have lost about 20% of their historical distance. SO it's all downhill from here.

I hit a 3 wood off the tee and average 250 - 265. I did hit a drive 343 yards once. That was when I was in 40s.

Lol. Unless you are a tour pro, you would never have the consistency in ball striking to hit that far.

I consider my self as an average golfer, or should I not?
, I'm 64,, 9hc,, I do hit a bit longer on all clubs, I rarely us the driver on my course..
    9 iron=132m(144y)
    7 iron=160m ( 174y)
    5 iron=185m (202y)

    3 wood=235m (256y) Best = is 285m, (311y),,nice day, great swing, descent roll.

On the golf course i thought i was hitting the ball 260 plus carry with a good drive. Go on trackman in controlled conditions and its more like 220-240. Downhill with a bit of wind behind you and a hard kick forward can inflate things more than you would think

This seems to be a bit on the low side for sure. I am 28, in good athletic shape and here are my numbers.
Taylormade M1 with a 73gram 8 degree driver and it goes 285 on average. I hit over 300 around once or twice a round.
    3 wood - 250
    5 wood - 235
    4 iron - 220
    5 iron - 205
    6 iron - 185
    7 iron - 175
    8 iron - 165
    9 iron - 155
    PW - 135
    52 degree wedge - 120
    56 degree wedge 105
    60 degree wedge - 90
I have recorded my last 20 rounds in the 70s and usually shoot between 74 and 76. I play with quite a few people ranging in age from 20s to 50s and I'd say the average drive is about 260 to 270.
