Tiger changed golf but mostly because he was just so crazy good at what everyone else was doing for years. Tiger is still an old school player with traditional style. His equipment is very traditional golf purist. Bryson, not as good as Tiger was, is doing everything differently, and is truly changing the game. Not just perfecting it like Tiger.
Tiger also brought being in shape and being an athlete with golf. Previous to Tiger not many people were in shape or near as in shape as Tiger was.

PGA Tour rules state tour players are advised to hit the ball in 40 seconds once they’re able to (sometimes 60 seconds) or else they incur a one stroke penalty. The clip of Bryson figuring out a putt looked more than 40 seconds lol. Maybe this rule was added recently?

I’ve heard players bitch about it, yet when it comes to the tee box, there he is with his grouping waiting for the next group in front of him to hit. Cannot be that slow

I was a high school golfer in Seattle from 1996-2000. I was one of the better players in my area and all of us had heard of the myth of Ryan Moore. Moore played at a high school about 40 minutes outside of Seattle and was the best junior golfer in America. I got to play with him once at a tournament in Yakima. He was incredible, I couldn't believe I was playing with a teenager. He went on to play at UNLV and, as was stated in this video, is one of five golfers in history to win the U.S. Amateur and the NCAA Division 1 championship golf tournament. He had a moderately successful career on the PGA tour. I've heard of Ryan Moore.

In 10 years(5 if Bryson has huge success by then), someone who is taking a serious look at golf will eventually make the decision of “should I have a one plane or two plane swing”. Tiger is the closest anyone has come to “beating” golf. The way competition has been heating up in the US, Europe and especially Asia in the last 10 years, it is highly unlikely we see someone as totally dominant as Tiger was in the 2000’s. Everyone in the top 20 world golf rankings are just so close in terms of skill you would have an extremely hard time knocking everyone over on any given week. The most consistent players of the last 5 years are a shard of how unbeatable Tiger was in his prime.
Golf is a very personal sport. What works for another is never guaranteed to work for you. It's a game of feel. So do what feels right for you.
As someone who has no interest in golf or understanding of it or its mechanics, not sure why I clicked on the video. (Probably the hilarious rivalry with Keopker)

He doesn’t cheat, but he pushes so hard against certain things that it becomes annoying. For example, when he called an official over because his ball was near what’s he called “a burrowing animal” - and it ended up being an ant. He is disliked for a lot of his personality, like most polarizing athletes are.

I always thought the different club lenghts was dumb, especially the shorter clubs that look like kids clubs. I'm 6'4", so bending over was annoying. I've been using same length clubs for awhile, game has improved tremendously.
I mean if it works it works, but wedges should be shorter than a 5 iron. Less shaft means less lever.
He's the most interesting pro golfer in the game, and it's not even close.
There's beauty in mystery and natural feeling, but there is also beauty in the deep understanding you can get from precise calculation. I have great appreciation for this style.
I can tell you this much...last week at the Wells Fargo tournament at Quail Hollow (Charlotte, NC), Bryson was BY FAR the sole guy there who was going out of his way to be nice to the kids during the practice days. Mind you, due to COVID, there were no autographs allowed. Did that stop Bryson...not one iota. Did other golfers use that as a reason as to why they'd ignore requests from the kids? YUP...Including McIllroy, Mickelson, Fowler...(side note, John Rahm was also VERY courteous to the kids and went out of his way for them). I watched Bryson, without even being asked, go into his bag....sign a bunch of his golf balls, and give them out to kids. He also, without hesitation posed for photos with folks who asked him as he was walking off of greens, onto the next tee box. He was 100 percent, a class act.

He has a good heart but his candidness can make him seem brazen. He is not a clone that answers in simple cliches. He is my favorite player.

As someone who never watches golf, I thought it was one of those slow games reserved for ppl with more patience. Who knew even they had limits on players slowing down the game

Playing casually, it is and isn't a slow game at the same time. It takes time for players to get to their balls and usually you can only hit one at a time in your group so that takes time too. It's not a fast game but at the same time there are people behind you and people behind them and only so much time in a day to play golf so if you're going too slow, you'll have a course marshall harassing you to move it along.

It is not how, it is how many.
It's refreshing someone is challenging convention. He sees golf analytically, breaks it down piece by piece and rebuilds it. And it seems to work. With a major already under his belt I see a very bright future for this guy. Good for him, as all I see is jealousy creeping in from more established players on tour. They should concentrate more on their game and less on his.

Never heard of the guy before (I don't watch golf), but I like him already. Doing everything to become the best, including stuff that others haven't even thought about, is the way it should be.

Brysonia is behaving exactly as his old man did at that age. His father however got very sick , had a absolute life altering surgery and somehow came out the other side a completely new man. Went from d-ba* to awesome overnight. Hopefully Brysonia follows suit with the attitude

Well his dad sure seems to think so. The other day he addressed his ball on 15 up 1 stroke . He was in the fair way right center and wayy down there. Cantlay was behind him and about 40 feet away. Bryson turned around … turned A.R.O.U.N.D and “ Hey Patrick can you stop walking ? .. he knew he was going to do that before they even teed off on that hole. He is a brat. Remember when someone told him to say fore! Or put his arm up when he missed the fairway? He said I do every time! Well video footage shows he did no such thing and the ball flew into a area with people at damn near Mach 8! It’s ok that we dislike him you know. We are allowed to root for who we want to root for .
I had no idea he was so calculating. Other players will start to use his tactics if they haven't already. Great video my dude!
I find the air density thing hilarious. In theory it makes a difference, but since he's a human and therefore isn't going to have exactly the same swing every time, I would think it makes that difference negligible/irrelevant.
I feel the same way. Seems a bit like over-doing it. But maybe if he feels he's in complete control or has knowledge of all variables, he'll swing better. If it works, it works!
But the goal of a pro golfer is just that, consistency. A lot of golfers (humans in general) are complainers and whiners. Air density is a very real thing with pro golfers, some avoid certain regions because the ball wont go as far, if they lose a tournament they will rip apart every physical aspect of the course, the weather, the catering, you name it. DeChambeau is different and in golf, that’s not always seen as desirable, hence why most golfers are douchebags 😁
Knowing the variables in the environment will allow you to more effectively judge your performance and determine if an overshot drive was a mistake in swing speed or an environmental factor.
If his entire game plan is molded around consistency and everything he does is in the name of consistency, it would behove him to consider air density just in case he does pull off being consistent... Which he apparently does.

I don't buy this "he's just different" narrative. From all I can see, he has a prototypical frat-boy personality. He's disrespectful to his competitors, to his caddy, to golf courses, to the tour, to his sponsor. He's a phenomenal talent, with an insane work ethic. But there's more to it than him being "different".
If you are staying within the rules and getting results you aren't controversial you're a genius.

I love slow play... shooting pool or playing golf, you can always level the field by taking your time and playing your own game. Even in fighting, pace determines victory, and if you can make force or somehow convince your opponents to play your game, your odds of winning dramatically increase. Hope yall keep it in the short stuff✌️

I haven’t followed PGA golf in a long time but you may have just introduced me to my new favorite player and given me a reason to start watching again. This guy sounds awesome. The maniacally scientific approach he has takes huge amounts of discipline. I also am intrigued by the single length Cobra irons. I need a new set of irons and I really want to try these now.

He’s doing it his way, the way he believes will help him improve and win. Credit to him for all the extra effort to be competitive. His success comes from hard work and challenging the status quo and his success is deserved!
The two masters of the single plane swing, Moe and Byran, with their record breaking accuracy and distance are disliked due to being so successful by employing a non traditional club swings based on scienctific analysis. The success of Bryson's innovative swing, putt etc do not threaten the Great Game but it does threatens those who have a big investment in time and money teaching and promoting the traditional golf swing mechanics.
Bryson, too smart and well educated not to have anticipated the negative reaction to his iconoclastic swing and philosophy would be, and all the more so when he ad the audacity to win.
I admire the way he plays, because sounds like also lives by my motto: "If better is possible, good is never enough." WAY TO GO DECHAMBEAU!

As someone who has never played golf, I enjoy his TH-cam videos because you get to hear his line of thought on why he chooses clubs and why he hits like he does. It helps a newbie like me understand what’s going on.

The beauty of golf is that you have a 18 tee boxes and 18 4" holes and everyone can play it whatever way they like to get it in the fewest strokes.

Years ago a PGA player got so upset with the slow play of his playing partner he left him and played on ahead ( was possible because they were the first group out on the day). If I was a pro and my playing partner was figuring out vectors and air density before hitting his shots I would be 6 holes ahead of him before he made the turn.
Wonder if he was playing with Sergio Garcia!!
That guy just won the silver medal at the Olympics btw, and is still playing amazing at nearly 50 years old. He took a lot of heat for that move back then and a lot of American golf fans wrote him off for good. It was a shame. Rory Sabbatini was always a professional.

A great, well pieced video. My favorite most definitely is his approach on pitching, where each club is the same length only different weights. It’s a whole new way of playing. Such a simple set of clubs, yet still versatile

@@zenex1741 nope. just different lofts. everything stays the same. I didnt get cobras ( yet ) but I got a set of pinhawks that specialize in same length irons. Ive been playing single plane golf since 2002 ( bad back )... changed my game and now I actually have fun on the course

I’m definitely a fan of his. I think his iron approach makes the most sense.
I wonder how difficult it would be to make the adjustment, since club head speed would now be much more constant.
SARDiverDave same here, wanna try out the cobra irons now. i bet if one were to try this approach when learning golf it would be 100x more effective than trying to adapt to it after playing with a traditional set.
@@fezzes428 i tried a buddies set of one length irons a little while back. I personally found them harder to get in the air. That being said, im a bang average player and i only used the for a round so had no time to get used to them.

@@SARDiverDave I changed to one length (same model as Bryson) early summer 2020, and it didn’t take long to get used to it. I’m a 17,5 hcp, and I like it a lot.
Also changed to JumboMax-grips, which I also love! The season is about to end here in Sweden, but I have a duplicate 7 iron and had the lie angle changed to 72, just to try… and loved that too! So next plan is to have my set changed to 72 degrees lie angle and shorten the irons accordingly. I’m 176cm (5’9) and have always felt a bit awkward with stock length.
Bryson has really inspired me to try new things. It is not like I’m hell bent to copy him, but I do like to try his approach, and so far it is something I recommend for anyone who is tempted. 😃
Even got the Cobra Armlock Grandsport 35 putter, though the delayed delivery (like 2,5 months…) made almost the whole summer here pass. 😔

Moe Norman is The Godfather of the swing Bryson is using.
I’m glad somebody pointed this out. Moe Norman had the most accurate and robotic-like swing I’ve seen. He made it as simple as possible and just pressed repeat. I’ve started indoctrinating parts of his and Ben Hogan’s swings recently. Amazing the talent of that generation
That's exaclty what his swing reminded me of as well.
Moe hit balls until his hands bled ....he was obsessed with the perfect swing. Unlike Bryson, he played so fast his partners hated it. He would walk up with the club already out the bag. Line up and hit as fast as you could think about it. He didn't worry about air density. If r could see the flag he would assess as he was walking what the wind was doing and he knew the yardage roughly so there was no dicking around

They do need to address the issue of the time he takes, generally speaking rules should be applied in the pro scene aswell to how long a match should take.
My solution to this is specifically on the greens, there be a time limit. If you havent gone for your shot within the time limit it adds a stroke.
What he is doing here is micro managment. These are things he should be developing a feel for outside of tournament play, if you need a sextant and a measurement for the thickness of the air to make a putt, while... different, completely unwatchable... and unnecessarily complicating it. Theres nothing special about it. Ive bullshit around on putting greens and tapped in the 6ft putt one handed he spent 6 minutes to calculate.... and, miss. Or sink. dosent matter. thats a ridiculous amount of time. This shit wouldnt fly outside of tournament either. People behind him are gonna turn the dude into their new 1 wood club cover.
They should apply a time limit per hole 10 mins fir a par 3 15 mins for a par 4 20 mins for a par 5 to make sure they are on time and make decisions making more interesting with less time available

He’s incredibly strong and insanely intelligent. Those two skills alone make for an amazing golf player. If other pro’s complain and talk shit about him, it’s because they are scared and/or threatened.

Everyone says Bryson Dechambeau brings "science" but I say science has been the absolute *center* of golf improvement from the start... he just brings more *refined* science, and uses the actual term.
Surely there’s some science behind every golf swing, otherwise it wouldn’t work.
I was thinking the same. The dudes at Callaway, Ping, Titleist, etc aren't just throwing materials into a blender and saying "I wonder what this'll do?" They're using science to build better balls, clubs, etc. This guy just does it on the course.

He was the top golfer at a rival clovis high school. I was fortunate enough to meet him and play with him on a few occasions. His skill and form is unrivaled, most successful man I know in my friendgroup

Agreed!!! Fantastic! He’s my favorite golfer, but I would absolutely hate golfing the way he does. I like the thrill of hitting a good shot on “feel”. Sometimes I feel better shooting a +7 using feel and drinking beer and enjoying the morning sun than I do hitting a +1 but being analytical the entire time

DeChambeau patterned his single plane swing from Moe Norman a Canadian golfer that is considered the purest ball striker by numerous pros that watched his exhibitions.
Didn't know about his swing or club lengths, but both make sense to me. Confidence is also a huge part of this guy's game, when you are that calculated you aim small miss small. And he knows its working too.
He’s just changing the rules and doing nothing wrong in the process. I see no problem here. History is defined by those who change it.
Golf is about to bite back though. They should have been working on this problem when the original Pro V came out and the savvy discovered you could instantly pick up 20 yards of distance by lining up the seam on your target line. I think the PGA and USGA are probably considering two major rules changes in 2022 or ‘23. One, a minimum allowable loft on a driver. Probably something in the 5-6 degree range. Two, a maximum COR on driver sweet spots that won’t ever become more generous. Club manufacturers will have to focus on making clubs more forgiving because the distance era is about to end. It has to golf courses won’t keep up.

This reminds me of a quote from one of the designers of the civilization games: "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of any game.", I like all the other stuff he does that just makes intuitive sense. Doing trigonometry on the greens and fluid dynamics calculations on the fairways though, to me is the literal definition of optimizing the fun out of the game.
I love it when science and athletics come together to completely max out the potential of the player. After a few generations, more and more people will start to approach golf scientifically rather than traditionally. The strive to be the best usually falls in line with survival of the fittest.

Putting is one of the toughest parts of the game... There is a reason people say "Drive for show... Putt for dough..." Chipping is the second hardest part and second most frequent set of clubs used in the game... I've seen 70 year old people that can just kick the snot out of young kids (Myself included)... Cause their short game and putting is so amazing...

no one should ever be penalized or villainized for figuring out how to be better at a sport within the guidelines of the rules. No one...ever. At the end of the day he must still swing the club and get the ball in the hole. Respect.
Same way I was taught how to shoot a soccer ball. The physics of the swings are very similar and I was a geeky science kid so my trainer put shooting into physics terms for me. Cool to see somebody at the top of a completely different sport learn in a similar method.
