Made a oem turbo replacement appointment once, and payed $3k out of pocket. later than realized how easy it was to do at home. It always pays to learn as much as possible about our cars. Great video Tanner!
This video makes me both miss working and owning Subaru’s and remind me why I bought something else at the same time. Thanks for the informative video Tanner.
Hey Tanner. It was nice meeting you at Spring Fest at Pacific Raceways. You seemed just as laid back and friendly as in your videos. I didn't want to bother you too much and just said hi, asked about the H6, and then said bye. I'm still glad I got a chance to meet you. It still felt like meeting a celebrity haha. I enjoy your videos and will get back to watching more of them.
Love the content. I see myself replacing my vf48 in the near future if it turns out to be the cause of my low boost(12 psi) in my stock 205 w/FBOs. I also have a passenger side valve cover gasket leak, but I don't plan on removing the engine to replace it.
Right on time again as I'm preparing to install a GS BB500. Would you suggest upgrading the oil feed lines (IAG/Torque solutions) while the turbo is out of the car? Thanks for your continued support of the EJ community by showing us these how to's. I have an entire folder of Smeedia how to's saved on my TH-cam.
Probably good point too make on what steps wouldnt have too be taken on a stock car so people kno who are not familiar with the subaru platform like the whole aos thats a added on performance modification
I made a list of everything that has ever pissed me off about every car or truck I have had the last 24 years. My outback wilderness checked off ALL the boxes. The best feature is the practicality!
I've been looking at replacing the TD04 in my 2011 Forester XT [auto trans]. This engine bay looks almost identical, as does the cockpit. This was exactly what I needed (again), Tanner. Thanks!
I'm digging the head mounted camera now you need a laser pointer to point out which hardware you're talking about. I have a outback xt that I'm looking at putting some money into and I'm curious with all the aftermarket bits under the hood of that one why'd they not upgrade the turbo? What's your going rate to throw a car on the lift and point out stuff that needs to be addressed?
Love the video I will be replacing my turbo soon foblue needs to be rebuilt can I just leave the lines off for a month or should I cap/ block off them somehow if so how should I
I remember last time i tried to drain tha coolant out of my CSF the drain plug broke off now im scared to take the plug out after fixing it my self because the wouldn’t warranty it 😢
If I replace the vf40(?) in my 2005 Outback XT with a vf52 it has to be tuned? I assume that’s a yes but just confirming. Also do I have to replace the tmic?
@@Smeedia you mind telling me exactly what and how you did it? maybe I’ll try doing it on my own you know my 17 sti limited is my first car I got myself!
This doesn't seem too bad actually. But also I spent a few hours removing my down pipe yesterday so what do I know? I had somewhere to be right after and was determined to save the bolt so I fought with it until it was so rounded I had to cut it. I ended up being late and now I have to get a bolt
So, you're running a grimmspeed turbo on the GD... if i was to go that route on my bugeye, could i swap it myself? Or would i need to take it to a tuner?
I’m battling the oil drain line for two hours now. I can’t get it to just slide back on. Kind of scratching my head. Should have just used this as an excuse to go rotated.
Both the 5 and the 4eat are pretty stout. 5 is stronger, but the 4 has no issues either. You need a trans cooler and don't drag it constantly. I've had a 71HTA in my 4eat XT with 250k for 50k now. evo3 for 75k prior to that. Both times the trans was able to withstand 350+ wtq. Zero slippage, even in the -50 days we have in MN.
Hey man got a 2013 wrx with the 2 bolt flange turbo currently but I have a ets front mount with that style piping but I would like to swap to an sti style turbo so I have more options but I really don't want to have to change the hot side piping so I was wondering if you think the fitment should be pretty much the same I think I have a solution with a grimmspeed coupler that fits a fmic to an sti style turbo I was just concerned about the barometric sensor being in the way...was wondering if you had any tips or advice?
yo tannner what up!! i need your help i was removing my alternator and the green connecter that connects to your alternator i was carefully trying to remove it but it was actually seized onto there and i yanked it to hard and the wires just came off and the plug stayed inside am i done for?!😭
Do you know if there are any OEM replacement downpipes that aren't stupid expensive? I'm trying to revert my car back to stock so I can sell it but not trying to pay $1k for a downpipe lol. (Stock dp for the car, cat was plugged so it got recycled)
1k for a low mileage downpipe isn’t a bad deal for oem, new they cost much more. I have a downpipe taken off my 21 sti at 7k miles. But 1k would be the minimum I would sell it for.
Unfortunately none for cheap really, you may find a deal every now and then on FB marketplace Luckily downpipe prices have dropped from scrappers so should help get prices down a good amount

Definitely save that money when you can 🎉
All parts included? Or just labor?
@@Carlos.Rivera yup, labor, hazmat fee, turbo and parts. All for a stock turbo replacement 4 yrs ago.
If they had too supply the new turbo replacement that's where alot of the money u paid was for because genuine oem turbos new are far from cheap .
do you need to change your transmission as well?
Helmet cam tanner is wicked rad. Tan cam really helps for directional purposes 🤘.
Helps to get a better perspective of where things are at vs having it sit on a tripod all the time 😅
Swapping a vf48 + 44mm ewg + fmic very soon. This vid helps me work up the nerve lol

I'm changing out my timing, pullys, tensioner, water pump, cam seals, and oil pump seal this weekend on MY16 STi. Hope my cam bolts aren't seized.
Make sure you have the proper tools to hold em and it shouldn’t be too bad. A bit of valve grind compound does wonders 🔥
@Smeedia company23 tools will be here on Tuesday. Sucks to order them for 1 job but I'll just lend them out to my local subie community.

GRIMMSPEED provides new oil feed lines for the turbo 🫡 and no problem! Hopefully helps some peeps out!

Eyyy perfect timing 🙌
Probably good point too make on what steps wouldnt have too be taken on a stock car so people kno who are not familiar with the subaru platform like the whole aos thats a added on performance modification
Only difference is one coolant line from the expansion tank to the turbo for doing this 🫡
This can be a pain, but it's easier than a reverse mount turbo. And I love the stock driveability.

Thank you! I was lost in the Internet
Hey Tanner when you are doing these videos can you tell us roughly how long it took in real time..just estimates or approximations thx bloke
Yes I can! This took me about an hour and a half
Great video my brotha. I definitely need this. Now to fix the xt
Get the XT going 🥳
Super helpful guide; have a turbo swap coming up next month. If I plan on upgrading my turbo inlet as well, should I do that at the same time?
Definitely would suggest doing so 🫡

I looked under the hood and you did not change MY turbocharger.
💔🥲
Thats great 😂
Got a leaky drain line, you just saved me so much money
Nice video.
Will be referencing this when I eventually pluck up the courage to do mine.
Always a great video Tanner

Need to do this to my 05 legacy gt thanks for this video

@@Smeedia also 05 legacy with turbo on the way out 🤦♂️ (think its the vf40 though) wheres the best place to get turbos??
I know you're a stick shift guy, how do the autos take to hp boosts? I used to drive only manual's, but now I like the DSG type.
Not very well tbh the 4EAT and 5EAT in stock form are kinda meh they eat a lot of power
DSGs though are top teir imo

these cars came with the vf46 not the 52. it may need some tuning. the 08 to14wrx came with the 52.
It had a Vf52 on it prior from whoever owned it before so we out another on 🫡
i figured that might be the case.im going to a blouch and front mount on my 06xt@@Smeedia
I ordered a blouch 440xt from rally sport hopefully it can make 450 whp fully built 6 speed
im excited to put my gtx2867r on the fozzy. just need headers
Yessss things going to scream, keepin an eye out kn Ig for that 😅
Guy should get his front windscreen replaced too.
I think that’s on their list, they just want it running top notch
I remember last time i tried to drain tha coolant out of my CSF the drain plug broke off now im scared to take the plug out after fixing it my self because the wouldn’t warranty it 😢
That happened to one of my CSFs as well 😢
Love the vid. I got two questions 1 wanna tell me how to put a 2015+ sti intake on a wrx? Also who would be a good person to get a sti dogbox trans
And use serrated nuts on the down pipe so they dont back off from the vibrations.
Great video. Thanks

Yes it will need a Remap 🫡
Is it possible to do a rotated turbo on a budget ??
100% I did my old rotated kit for pretty cheap but I made it all. Was my first time making one though 😅

Postive on the tuner, no way around this
You can 100% swap it yourself. However you’ll need a base tune. You should be able to get one via email from your tuner
I have a 2014 wrx base what oem spec turbo you Recommend?@Smeedia
I found when removing my engine to leave the turbo on was easier for me, its so cramped for some of the studs back there
What you need after installing a new turbo?
Is a oem Spec turbo also good the oem is expensive
What would be a turbo upgrade for the legacy gt? Is the turbo out of the WRX 09-14 the same?
So, dont need to torque set the turbo bolts to up/down pipes?
thanks its always good for me to know how long these jobs take i m an old fart so its a one day job
Worst part is always having to get the downpipe off 😅
So you don't pre-oil the turbo before running it or does it have assembly lube in it? Also bypassed swapping the coolant fittings to the turbo.
*LET’S GO TANNER!!!*
🥳🥳🥳
Did you have to prime the new turbo?
I’m battling the oil drain line for two hours now. I can’t get it to just slide back on. Kind of scratching my head. Should have just used this as an excuse to go rotated.
Yo Tanner what’s up!
What’s up Joe!
Do you have to take off the downpipe or could you get the turbo off like that.
WHERE DID THE EVO GO
Where I can buy a good turbo replacement for my 2015 sti ?

@@Smeedia yes
What the hell did you take off before you went weird about the tape?

You’ll need 1 hot pipe for the conversion. I think ETS Sells them. The fitment is a bit different unfortunately
@Smeedia as far as the turbo tho you think it would fit ok? I thought you did it in your hatch with the grimmspeed turbo but I couldn't really find it
What turbo would you recommend for a WRX looking to make 400whp? 6 speed swapped, looking to turn it up.
Pump gas or E85?
