    Using my osmo action in Hawaii at the moment and I must say.... WATCHERS: this is the most honest review on these cameras I have ever seen!!! This is the deal maker review.
    The color on my gopro is amazing! the contrast is soft, and the low light recording is a small but significantly better. And I love some of the features of the osmo but it lacks picture quality and abilities in those settings. Bummed but each camera has its own pros and cons but it seems to me that it’s worth losing the front screen for that quality at the moment.

    Great Review Ben. A straight up review focusing on the all important 'Picture Quality', unlike the other 3,802 reviews that we've seen in the last week who all got caught up on the front screen, tech specs and other minor features. If the quality is second rate, who cares how we look on the front screen! Im glad that you did the comparison on a sunny day, which is when most owners will take their Action Camera's out to play. Keep up the unbiased, honest reviews with integrity... Cheers.

    About your remarks on not being able to switch screens...I don't really see the reason for it. I'm a skydiver and snowboarder and I really hate to see wrong framing from my stick (snowboarding) as well as my wrist mount (skydiving) so I give big thumbs up to this front screen and see no reason to switch screens, at least not in this cases.

  • @StuartHendricks
    @StuartHendricks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting comparison. To be fair, if you're filming in broad sunlight then you should expect harsh shadows. That's not really an indicator of what the camera can do. Also, the GoPro SOOC colors are way too oversaturated compared to the Osmo. Wider field of view is also not necessarily a good thing, the distortion looks terrible. Overall the Osmo gives a far more natural look than the GoPro.

  • @godofhope
    @godofhope 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I had to experience this myself. I bought both and it’s obvious the GoPro has far better image quality. No oversharpening, no oversaturation, no burned highlights, no crushed blacks, nicer field of view. I really wanted to like the new fresh Osmo Action but in the end image quality is what counts most and with the comparable image stabilization the GoPro won the battle in my own test.

    Good review. I still wish there were (3) more features with the Osmo Action that GoPro does not offer - 1. The optional date/time stamp displayed on the recorded video (many action cams from China has this feature). 2. A non-distorted field of view for vlogging (i.e. Gitup Git2P 90). 3. A 3.5 mm external mic port (Sony offers this on their action cams)

  • @kevinbergman8532

    I get the feeling many of the problems from both of these cameras are from processor restraint. In which case, that'll probably be a main area of improvement. GP2, perhaps.

  • @ProjectAnubisUSA
    @ProjectAnubisUSA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Osmo needs a mic adapter, water on display fix, no lag.
    GOPro needs a smaller mic adapter, no freeze, front facing display.
    Both need a zoom button and A BIGGER SENSOR FOR LOW LIGHT! We all want this so make it happen!
    I’d take the osmo if the display water affect gets fixed and an option for a mic available. I have the hero 7 black and not worth switching yet since my issue is just random freezing 🥶 on the GoPro right now.

    GREAT VIDEO! thank you bud! Hey just wanted to share my thoughts. I have both and both are fantastic! I have to say though that post production color-correction & grading with the osmo action is so much better. You can push mid tone exposure and highlights way further without damage. straight out of the camera the gopro looks better but I ALWAYS color-grade. and the rock-steady is rediculous! LOL seriously gimbal-like. Also my Gopro is sooooooo glitchy! I miss so many shots and have to force re-takes constantly! The Osmo wins for me. another A+ Video Ben!

    GoPro nicer image, but come on it's version 7 and it still crashes constantly? That makes it unusable for a lot of people that don't want to risk missing stuff. Kudos to the DJI Action Camera for its stabilization....but, over all I give a "thumbs up" to GoPro. GoPro has better color, especially in the shadows, more detail. To equal the Action Camera's stabilization, you can always correct that in post. End results still give the winning camera to GoPro.

      Great question on file size, I might cover this in my next vid. GP7 supports HEVC, unfortunately Osmo Action does NOT. (Only MOV, MP4 (H.264). So for example, 60sec clip on each camera, the DJI Osmo Action: 720 MB. GoPro: 330 MB.

    you covered a lot of important topics.
    I hope one day there will be a action camera with lenses you can swap, and coming with Fish eye and No distortion lens, which is what I need, and with ND filter like Osmo Action has.
    Currently it's possible to get Nd filters for Gopro too, also get No distortion lens, but I don't know if it's possible for the Osmo Action yet.

    I have bought the Go Pro black 7 in order to use it beside my osmo pocket at my last holidays on Gran Canaria. Because I myself also found the picture quality of the Go Pro a little better than of the Osmo action cam, I decided for the Go Pro. But I was by making videos pissed off of the Go Pro because it hang itself up at every footage after 3 - 5 minutes. This problem of freezing in seems to be a general one of the Go Pro how you can read in many forums. I lost on this way many highlight moments for my video. This is an absulute No Go for an action cam. My Osmo Pocket never made any problem.

    Ben have you ever tried contacting gopro support? I'm suddenly realising buying the GoPro 8 Hero Black was a huge mistake, lagging, crashing and now won't turn on. Support is soooo difficult to get through, just managed today and the service is slow, the guy had zero knowledge and was making mistakes between me and other cases he was obviously dealing with alongside and then when he asked me to upload a video of the camera not working, 4 minutes later the chat disconnected. Now that it's mid day I know from previous experiences i'll never get through and will have to try early tomorrow morning. Seems like it'll be a long and difficult journey trying to get a resolution to my issues :( what a terrible company

    Really great unbiased review and I agree with most of it. I also own both of these cameras. Curious if you have ever had overheating issues with the gopro? Have you tried using an external battery with it? My Hero 7 Black overheats and shuts off regularly when it's on external battery power. The Osmo has not had any issues with heat when it's plugged into external battery. I sure wish my GoPro could do that as I like the features better (when they work). But it's unusable when it overheats and shuts off. Very unreliable. Thank you for sharing this review.

    Its because the OSMO crops at 22% in 4k@60fps where the GoPro only crops at 10%, its double the cropping. At 4k@30 its 18% cropping where the GoPro still has a 10% cropping. That is why the video "looks" better, but in reality the GoPro still out performs it given the crop difference.
    I think the OSMO has plenty of room to improve with firmware updates that might make it closer to the GoPro. I personally would go with a GoPro over the OSMO mostly because they are better established. I personally think the GoPro is the better performer, but to an every day user I don't think there is much difference between the two. If you aren't doing production, then either camera would be fine.

    Thanks for this great review. I think I'll stick with my GoPro Hero 7. As a professional videographer the "image" is what it is all about. Do you know of a gimbal for the GoPro which would resolve the slight background movement during the running phase? I once seen a gimbal (can't seem to locate it anymore) for the GoPro (don't think it was a GoPro product) that also had powered pan left/right and tilt up/down that was awesome and wondered if it would resolve all movement wobble? Do you know of these units? Thanks again. Awesome video and very helpful.

    Nice video. Blessings. The gopro 7 footage shakes makes it for a real action moving type feeling. I fly fpv drones for fun. So the movements from the stability on the gopro is fine. I can choose how to cut while editing. Use some scenes where it shakes and some stabilised. Works out fine. Any of both on a standing tripod for those type shots then we look at which image quality is best. So I guess it all leads back to image quality. I prefer use the gopro. Fish eye can be fixed. That's the least. I need to feel like I am moving so some shakes and don't have to turn off eis. It stays stable long enough for my audience to see what I am doing. Action. Again good review. Keep them coming.

    • @krane15
      @krane15 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UZENI Unless the product design is faulty (extremely unlikely), even two in a row would be high odds. Nevertheless, in cases such as yours, you need to check with the seller to determine if they all came from the same batch.
      Alternatively, the manufacturer may offer to inspect the item specifically for that fault before sending it out to you. The third option, and more likely provided there was no recall put out, is user error. Product websites are great places to compare notes, and to see what issues others are having and how they fixed them.
      I have the GoPro 6, and it also freezes, but only when I attempt to change resolutions between shots. There's a lot of data going through that tiny form factor which means you need to have a comparable quality recording media -- do you have a good card?
      Anyway, so far, mine has never frozen during recording where continuous operation is most critical. Before my GP 6 I had a 3+ and it operated flawlessly even after being dropped multiple times.
