Amazing Grace...Such a moving piece of music...hard to imagine it was written on the deck of a slave ship with all those souls suffering under deck, unimaginable irony of human cruelty and religion
It was not. John Newton was, in fact, a slaver. And, in a terrible storm in 1748, he vowed to dedicate his life to Christ if he and the ship was spared. He was spared, but continued to work in the slave trade till 1755, when he stopped sailing altogether. Then he began to study theology, became a minister and abolitionist, and wrote the poem Amazing Grace for a New Year's Day sermon in 1773. He became a leader among British abolitionists, and the poem was put to music with many melodies. In 1835, an American composer named William Welker set it to the tune known as "New Britain" in shape note format, and that is the version we know and love today. But as you point out, it is remarkable that a wretch like Newton - who dealt in the slave trade - could be transformed into a man who fought for the dignity of all - is both ironic and amazing.

Maestro, it's an impressive away of playing cello... only someone with a pure heart and soul, that can create/composing musics and can make his cello a "living" part of his life...that dominate his cello and it dominates you...

The man played for Dwight D Eisenhower in 1962 when he was seven, so cool
John F. Kennedy was President in 1962.
Yo-Yo Ma actually played for John Kennedy who had invited Eisenhower to attend the concert. Presidents and ex-Presidents were more cordial back then, started by Harry Truman, who had invited Herbert Hoover to the White House after being snubbed by FDR for years.

Its pretty normal to me, i usually saw cellist bow as loose as that. Its definitely looser than a violin's bow. And there's nothing wrong with prerecorded either. We all know yoyoma can play this song whenever he wants to, prerecorded or not
