    Payne"s last competive golf act was in the 1999 Ryder Cup at The Country Club. He conceded Colin Montgomery"s long putt for par at #18 to square the match as Payne knew the crowd was on Colin for the entire round and made amends for the spectators actions. Monty clapped as Payne picked up Monty"s ball and gave it to him. True class.

    Showing my age. During his final year on the tour, at Augusta, I followed him closely. In those days during practice rounds you could get close enough to the players to hear them. On the 4th, the par 3, two lovely girls in their early 20's called him over to the ropes. I can still remember the gold plates on the heels and toes of his shoes. One girl whispered something in his ear. Loudly he said "thank you so much for the offer. I have the most beautiful wife and family a man could ever wish for. There is no way I would ever do something to jeopardize losing them". Can't find those words coming out of the mouths of athletes today. His famed, framed pictures from his memorial service with the footprints in the dew is one of our most prized possessions. As a PGA Life Member, I am blessed to have played, promoted, and taught the same game as Payne. RIP Legend, God bless.

    I loved Payne Stewart, just a class act through and through. I worked at a prestigious Golf Club in Maryland back then that had the names of famous golfers for the member's locker stalls, Payne was one of them. After learning of his passing, I made and framed a montage of photos around the his most iconic one as the centerpiece, the fist pump and leg kick out after that putt at the '99 Open (watched on TV). I brought it in the next day and placed it by Payne's locker. As far as I knew working there for another year, no club member had ever used the locker after that, and my photo montage was never removed. I can only hope it's still there today, respect. I still miss watching him play, RIP Payne...

    When I started playing golf in 1986, I watched golf, read books, bought VHS tapes, everything.
    I wanted to drive it like Greg Norman, have the smooth iron swing of Fred Couples, and I wanted to be able to putt like Jack.
    But the classiest guy, the dude in your group who always pushed for you to have fun and cherish little moments,..that was Payne Stewart.
    A CLASS ACT that has yet to be surpassed. No ten golfers today combined, can muster the class and humility that Payne had.

He wasn’t playing well and told one of our guys that if he missed the cut it was OK because his son had a soccer game tomorrow and he would like to see him play. Payne missed the cut. Well in 1978 whilst taking care of Jack Nicklaus's aircraft in Scotland on our air base one of my guys came to me in my office and said ther is something I think You should come and see . We hopped into a land rover and went to runway 27 to discover that his aircraft N1JN had an issue the day before, Saturday he went to Germany to do an exhibition he flew into Prestwick to drop his son Jackie off later that day when they returned his pilot Ralph Knight gave me the keys to the plane and off they went to St. Andrews . So now we arrive at the plane to see the emergency escape hatch in the upper fuselage wasn't sitting right so I called up Ralph and got himto come over . Between us we removed it and got another seal flown in from the states pronto ! The point of all this if we hadn't spotted this Jack and his wife and two Kids could have gone the way of Payne Stewart. To this day I don't know if the Nicklauses knew we possibly saved their lives.

    No mystery here. Oxygen failed at altitude. Everyone unconscious. Autopilot flew till no fuel. Plane crashed. No reason to read article.

    • @stevez6499
      @stevez6499 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It’s not that simple. Yes the Autopilot flew on it’s last assigned heading and the plane did run out of fuel and then crashed. But too many things were missed by the crew that should not have been for the lack of oxygen. The engine bleed valve that provides oxygen was found in the off position post crash. As was the crew’s oxygen mask valve that was shut off and not open during the external preflight as it should have been. I was told that a previous crew that flew Payne purposely shut off the bleed air valve so ice that formed quickly on the cabin interior windows could be scraped off and used for drinks. And the pilots had their oxygen masks on thinking they were getting oxygen. But they were not and everyone flew asleep and then died. Very sad but very logical to an unlikely scenario.

      @@stevez6499 The thing about scraping off ice for drinks I don't buy...sorry. Who was the person that told you that? To get ice on the windows would mean that everyone would be unconscious and not likely to be making drinks
      .That aircraft had not pressurized properly the day before and the bleed valve HAD been changed on the engine...but it wasn't test flown afterwards. So the Stewart flight was the first with the new valve and after take-off the pilots set the autopilot and during the climb the aircraft again didn't pressurize properly. Stewart had a reputation as a 'nice guy' but they said he was a stern business man and neither pilot wanted to be the one to have to go back and tell him that they were going to have to miss the appointments they had planned...while arguing who would do it you don't have very long at the excellent climb rate of the Lear before you will pass out...which is what happened according to what I was told. Seems that there are many versions of what happened...eh?
      I'm an A&P and worked with a fellow who got the call at Lear from the authorities asking how far it could fly on the fuel load it took off with...and the estimation was within a few miles of dead on accurate. It did over-fly several cities but the prediction was that it was going to go down in cow pastures so the escorting F-16's didn't take action and just followed it. The autopilot was set to climb and not for a particular altitude so it was flying along still trying to climb but was as high as it could go which varied around the 40,000 ft mark until it ran out of fuel and spiraled in. Everyone was frozen and identifying the broken chunks was a nightmare when they were dug out of the hole. Very sad.

    • @stevez6499
      @stevez6499 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@recoilrob324 I was told it from a charter pilot that had done the exact thing on a previous flight for him. In the high humidity in Florida I think the frosting of the windows could happen. I don’t have any time in a Lear but thousands of hours in Gulfstreams.
      Being an A&P you certainly know there are visual and physical warnings that would indicate the bleed air valve was not open. If you missed the CAS message your ears would certainly tell you the cabin wasn’t pressurizing. And then climbing through a 13,000 foot or so cabin altitude, another warning would indicate cabin altitude high. And the bleed air valve was determined to be in the “off” position by the NTSB. The force of the impact did not change that from on to off. It was purposely turned off is the only logical explanation. And the crew thought they were getting oxygen in their quick donning masks. But no they weren’t.
      Yes the ice drink story seems far fetched but everything about it fits this accident perfectly. And we all know some charter pilots were no paid well back then and if Payne told them he’d throw them $2-300 to do that? I think it would happen as this other pilot admitted to doing earlier.
      Also I’ve been to an altitude chamber and at 25,000’ I was doing ok for more than 5 minutes.
      It’s very sad but hard to explain the accident with two pilots missing all the lack of pressurization clues. That just doesn’t work.

    • @recoilrob324
      @recoilrob324 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevez6499 Thanks for the info! It's hard to explain without data recorder exactly what happened...seems there are lots of people offering 'informed' opinions that don't exactly jive with one another so what I was told might not be right.
      An aircraft landing in Miami in July will often be iced up having come down from -70F so maybe that's where the 'iced up window' story came from?
      I did get to participate in an NTSB investigation of a fatal Malibu crash years ago and how it was conducted didn't fill me with confidence that a jet that augured in upwards of 600 mph would leave controls in position so they could positively be identified pre-crash.
      The story about the aircraft not pressurizing properly the day before didn't detail what and how...just that the valve had been replaced...perhaps it began normal operation then failed? Meaning a control function not the valve as they're a pretty simple device and not likely to suddenly fail.
      That might also explain the pilots not getting oxygen from their masks if the control unit was the same....sorry I've never worked on a Lear...or any cockpit as I spent my time at P&W working on engines.
      Guess we'll never know the exact details of the crash other than for sure it wasn't pressurized and everyone died. Hopefully somewhere the truth IS known but maybe for insurance reasons is being kept on the down-low but quietly fixed. I'm positive this has happened in the past and I've absolutely no confidence in the FAA and other authorities to actually pinpoint a cause without details from data recorders to guide them. Fly safe my brother.

    What a bunch of clickbait. Everybody knows “what really happened”. We’ve all known for over 20 years. How about titling this “Payne Stewart- Golfing Legend”? At least be respectable, instead of acting like you have some sort of secret than no one knows…..

      Such a comment? Payne stewart was unique and added much needed style to a fairly stale dress code in golf plus his talent,wonderful sportsmanship and humanity-what are you on? Remember what he did with mountgomery in the ryder cup?

    Lots of inaccuracies in this poorly researched video. In fact, too many to document.
