Honda Goldwing running on a Dodge Neon Coil!?!?

  • Since the Coils went bad on my 1975 Honda Goldwing GL1000, I decided to take on the project of converting the motorcycle over to run on 2003 Dodge Neon Coils. Come along with me as I fix it for Josh sake.

Nice job. This I am going to use, if I ever find a Dodge Neon coil, here in Denmark, fir my 1200 Aspencade. Thanks 👍

interesting but my inquirey has to do with your bike I thougth i seen a batwing fairing on it and i'm looking for mounting brackets for my 83 gl1100 a name or some pictures of how it was done appreciate anything info you have

Goes to show how crappy Dodge vehicles are...
The Dodge car had 20 AWG wiring on the coil and the Honda motorcycle from 1975 had 16 AWG.

Did you change the firing order on you neon pack ? I did as per another . It seems to run fine but ballast resistors gets hot as hell . Did you remove any of the wiring from the stock setup after installing neon pack

Hey David, I was really careful to color code and lable the wires, and in the end I did have to swop two wires to get the correct firing order. Those ballast resisters do get really hot! I clamp mine to the metal frame with metal house clamps to help dissipate the heat that they put off. I left all the stock wiring I could, but the points were pulled by the previous owner and a CDI was installed so some things are different on mine

what are you supposed to do with the ballast resistor when you perform this mod?

The Ballast Resistor needs to stay in the circuit where it was with the original coils. I have had one burn out so it was providing too much resistance. It should be close to 1.50 Ohms. If it's more resistance the coils will not provide enough spark, if it's less resistance, the coils will burn up.

@@fixitforjoshsake . thanks, i misinterpreted some instructions and ran the bike without the ballast resistor, it was kinda dumb, kinda experimental. and I'm pretty sure it burnt out the electronic ignition module, I'm going through and replacing it right now and re-adjusting the timing

When the ballast resister burned out, I had to run the bike for a bit with it unplugged to get home, but it's defiantly hard on the coils! But they're still working😅

@@fixitforjoshsake another thing that i had a theory about was the alternator, From what I've heard the stock 300w alternator in the gl1000's were enough to power the bike in it's stock form and not much else, Do you think it could be insufficient for the dodge neon ignition mod since it runs off 12v instead of the 7v-9v that the stock coils run off? I know that they sell upgraded 500w alternators for these bikes on randakks, I'm considering taking out the motor and replacing the alternator while I do the clutch.

@@blakewixom2893 interesting theory! I didn't change the voltage going to the dodge neon coils from what it is stock. So it's my understanding that when you push the starter button, 12v is delivered to the coils. But when you release the starter button, the voltage going to the coils falls to 8v to allow for a cooler and more efficient electrical system. Since the dodge neon coils deliver a hotter spark, the GL engine runs better with it.

Awesome video! I'm rebuilding 2 GL1100's, and I'll be upgrading both bikes with these coils. I have a '81 with a batwing fairing/custom paint and a '83 hard tail chopper. Here's a video of them th-cam.com/video/h_CrudwOX1g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dMg_i1gUiBlxwlLQ

I don’t care if its a coil from the international space station, who cares!??
