What Trump wants from trade tariffs | Economist explains

- US President Donald Trump has fired the starting gun on what could turn into a global trade war.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
He is set to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, and 10% on imports from China.
And he's warned the European Union it could be next.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that Trump's tariffs only affect big businesses. It's not that simple-these tariffs can trickle down to everyday consumers, impacting the prices of goods we buy regularly. I made the mistake of assuming tariffs were just a "big business problem" until I noticed my grocery bill creeping up.
I thought tariffs were just about protecting U.S. industries, but then I learned that they can lead to higher costs for imported goods, which many of us rely on. It's all about understanding how global trade policies affect local prices.
I think one of the biggest myths is that tariffs are a quick fix for trade imbalances. Sure, they might protect certain industries, but they can also disrupt supply chains and lead to job losses in other sectors. I know someone who works in manufacturing, and their company struggled with higher material costs because of tariffs
That's why I started consulting with a CFA. They’re a pro at breaking down how tariffs impact the economy and individual wallets. They helped me understand how these policies could affect my budget and what to expect in the coming years.
My CFA, Peter Dewitt Martin, has assisted me in navigating these complexities efficiently. He is a renowned figure in his field. I used his free consultations to my advantage
Oh, that’s a great recommendation. I just checked out his name on google, his website was actually the top result which made it easier to locate him, i sent him a mail and he seems really knowledgeable. I’ve been trying to figure this out on my own, but it’s way over my head.
Tariffs will increase costs of finished goods and components used throughout US manufacturing. This will be an immediate and huge hike in inflation. To fight inflation the Fed will have to hike interest rates which will be wonderful for the billionaires but possibly take away the middle class. Inflation is so high that consumers are literally taking debt for basic life necessities. Collapse has indeed begun..
The U.S. economy relies on ongoing credit and debt generation for sustenance. The Federal Reserve is expected to increase the money supply, leading to further debt accumulation for the average American. So how exactly can we guard against the coming financial reset Like what are really the best strategies to make our portfolio recession proof against the incoming financial reset? I'm very worried about my $310k stock portfolio.
Accurate asset allocation is crucial with an Experts guidance. I have 850k in equity, 75 cash earning 5.25 interest, 685k in roth ira, 120k in 401k, Gold and silver bars. age is 48. My advisr helped me realign my portfolio to my risk tolerance and it boomed shortly.
Can you share details of your advisor? I want to invest my increased cash flow in stocks and alternative assets to achieve financial goals.
‘’Aileen Gertrude Tippy'' is the licensed advisor I use and i'm just putting this out here because you asked. You can Just search the name. You’d find necessary details to work with to set up an appointment.
Thank you for the lead. I searched her up, and I have sent her an email. I hope she gets back to me soon.
My greatest concern is how to recover from all these economic and global troubles and stay afloat especially with the political power tussle going on in our country.
The current economic climate, including underperformance of financial markets due to fear of inflation, has led to a decrease in the value of my portfolio. I would appreciate any recommendations on how to potentially increase returns during this market downturn.
Such market uncertainties are the reason I don’t base my market judgements on here-says, I had to revamp my entire portfolio through the aid of an advisor, before I started seeing any significant results happens in my portfolio, been using the same advisor and I’ve scaled up $450k within 2 years, whether a bullish or down market, both makes for good profit, it all depends on where you’re looking.
Could you kindly elaborate on the advisor's background and qualifications?
I've stuck with ''Lauren Christine Campbell'' and her performance has been impressive to date. She’s quite renowned in her field with over two decades of experience, you can simply look her up.
Thanks for the info. I searched for her full name and found her website right away. I reviewed her credentials and did my research before reaching out to her.

In 1929 and the early 1930s, a trade war escalated during the Great Depression, fueled by the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 in the United States. This act imposed high tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods to protect domestic industries but triggered retaliatory tariffs from other countries, such as Canada, France, and Germany.
The result was a collapse in global trade-U.S. exports fell by 61%, and international trade shrank by 66% between 1929 and 1934. This deepened the global economic crisis, increased unemployment, and strained international relations, contributing to the political instability that preceded World War II.
This event serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of protectionism during economic crises.
Trump hasn't got a clue about this sort of thing...

@Rockall57 Trump hasn't got a clue about anything, he stared into a solar eclipse when warned not to. That's how ignorant and stupid he is.

Alright, so I’ve been stacking up my emergency fund like a good little finance nerd-$167K saved up and ready to invest. In the 1980s, there was a very intense debate in Canada about free trade with the USA. The free-traders won the political battle, and Canada has become very integrated with the US economy. I suspect that most Canadians deeply regret that decision. Even if Trump were to cancel those tariffs, or if Canada were to come to an agreement, the US has proven itself to be an unreliable partner, and I predict that Canadians will be determined never to find ourselves in such a vulnerable position. It will take decades to restructure our economy, but we will do it.
Not every American supported NAFTA. When Ross Perot ran for President he was against it and some may even remember his famous "NAFTA...sucking sound" speech. He predicted every thing we are seeing now and was called an alarmist for it. Unfortunately, he was never elected.
No you won't.
Canada itself will be ruled by a fascist soon
@@zorrofox8950 Whos a worse trade partner for Canuckistan, USA or China? Trump doesnt treat his allies very well. Im sure Mexico is pondering this too!
I don't regret it. The U.S. is the richest market in the world. What Trump doesn't understand is that trade agreements with partners of equal standards of living grow the size of the market which increases efficiencies and reduces costs. Trump is just a stupid vengeful man. He will not make America great again, he will throw it into chaos and alienate it's friends. Trump seems o think that the U.S. should be the economic centre of the world as it was after the second world war. It never will have that relative strength again because the much of the world has caught up to the U.S. and they ain't ever going to move backwards.
If the U.S. isolates itself, it diminishes itself, it's that simple.
The only reason US has a deficit with Canada is due to the large amount of energy they import. They have a trade surplus with goods.

Bye Bye Canada. USA broke up with you!!
Tariffs are a tax on American businesses that import goods from foreign nations, collected by the U.S. government, with the revenue going to the U.S. Treasury. The cost of tariffs are passed on to the American consumer in the form of inflation. During Donald Trump's first presidency, the value of the U.S. dollar declined 11%. Moody's downgraded the U.S. credit outlook from stable to negative.
Stop lying to me.
Then add the implications to farmers when retaliation tariffs took effect. Billions of US tax payers dollars went to bailing out farmers 2018 when receiving less orders from foreign nations thanks to those nations imposing higher tariffs on us.

K. Keep us posted.
I just researched it. There is no way the goods can be produced in the US and sold for the same price as goods from China. Here is a mini-article: "As of November 20, 2024, Shanghai has the highest monthly minimum wage among 31 provinces (RMB 2,690/US$370 per month), and Beijing has the highest hourly minimum wage (RMB 26.4/US$3.7 per hour). Thank you for your videos mate.... With Trump's presidency, economic shifts are expected to be significant, especially given the current recession and the potential impact of future rate cuts. Although rate cuts might not boost inflation as hoped, they may lead banks to further restrict consumer and corporate lending, contributing to a deflationary period for various assets. This environment could result in declining stock values, retail and housing sales, and rising unemployment due to layoffs. The US economy is grappling with uncertainties, global fluctuations, and pandemic aftermath, causing instability. Rising inflation, sluggish growth, and trade disruptions need urgent attention from all sectors to restore stability and stimulate growth.

>The United States used to be a manufacturing country. Since the end of the Second World War this changed from a manufacturing center to a consumer center. All governments since the end of that conflict have been increasing the national debt, all of which has devalued the US dollar to the point where, today, a US dollar is worth about three cents, yes three cents, compared with a 1971 US dollar. So, today all the consuming US public is consuming with devalued dollars, hence, the increase in the sticker price of all goods and services. We simply need more of these devalued dollars to buy anything.
>The plan by the current US government to install these tariffs is a distraction from the real problem which is the US debt and the devalued US dollar. Currently, the US debt to GDP ratio is well over 100% and so the only way to get this ratio down is either to pay down the debt or to increase the productivity of the nation. The former is out of the question; the second option will take maybe twenty to thirty years. The latter is not unrealistic since it really took over forty years to create this problem in the first place.
>With regard to the stated deficit in trade with Canada this is a complete falsehood. If one were to include services as well as goods, then the deficit would be dramatically altered. In addition, the US imports over four million barrels of oil each day. This oil is shipped at deep discounts which allows the US refineries to sell the finished product on the open market generating huge profits. The statements by the US President are misleading, incomplete and false. We are living in dangerous times. The last thing a leader ought to be doing is turning on its trusted and reliable ally. He will pay for this and so will the American people. Just wait until they go the grocery store or the gas station.
>This whole charade will not end well. Canada should immediately reform the inter-provincial trade barriers and should continue to forge new alliances around the world, including with China, India and the other BRICS nations. The US is in decline. The Americans do not appreciate what we, Canada, represent. Once the trust is broken it will never be restored. Canada should turn away from the whole misconception that the US is our friend and ally.
It is not!

What is going to stop US manufactures from raising prices to matching tariffs for profit increase?
Nothing, that is inevitable and happens every time. For US consumers it is a lose lose.
Tariffs are a ruse to extend and cut income taxes. In his last term, he could only cut taxes through creative accounting by having the middle class tax cuts expire. The tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy don’t expire, of course.
He wants to extend the middle class tax cuts while claiming they are “new” and increase the existing tax cuts for the wealthy. Unfortunately, this will blow a whole in the deficit and can’t pass congress through reconciliation. So the GOP need tariffs as another source of income to get the numbers to “balance”.
So the middle class get their existing tax rate extended but will pay a national sales tax ie tariff on imports.
The wealthy will get a further reduction in their income tax. The federal sales tax is of less consequence becoming it represents a much smaller percentage of their wealth.
The poor will be screwed as they will see their costs go up because a sales tax is regressive.
And Trump won’t be worried about the effect of these tariffs on the electorate as Republicans don’t have any intention whatsoever of allowing any future free and fair election.
Yes but wages will have to come down for US to be a manufacturing economy.
@@user-kb1rl5qy1k Food and ALL products get to our stores in the U.S. using DIESEL made from Canadian Crude. I shouldn't have to tell you the price of Oil affects food prices. American Food giants use raw materials from elsewhere because it's cheaper and or can't be grown here (The U.s. does not export Pineapples). Economics is complicated. Your summary isn't.
Tariffs do not really work that well. US and Canadian people pay a much higher price for gas and products, people loose jobs as production slows down. American companies who rely a lot on Canadian imports pay the price with high tariffs they pay to import for crude oil, power and raw minerals.
