I forgot to mention in the video, but the original listing of the "renewed" model I bought does not show up on Amazon or Woot anymore. I linked the closest listing on Amazon (which is from Woot also) which is actually listed as Brand New. Sorry for any confusion.

I would be very tempted to pay $350ish for this MM 2018 if I didn't picked up a used one for $50 2018 i5 not too long ago.
The problem I have with this compared to the older 2012 or 2014 MM is that you can't swap out the storage.

My last Intel Mac was the i5 2018 Mac mini, from there I went to the M1 Macs. It was a great device, and what I miss most is the ability to run Windows under Boot Camp (Parallels just isn't the same). You got a fantastic deal.

@@bapt_andthebasses I did, a SFF Dell OptiPlex that I upgraded. I have a few old, 32-bit applications that Apple doesn't have a suitable replacement for, and it runs those without a problem. I set it up to dual boot Windows and Linus Mint, so I have 3 platforms to play with. My daily driver is still an Apple device, an M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14.

Dang! NEW? For that low on Amazon? Bought mine!
I wonder how much you got yours for, but mine totaled $371.25 (tax included). They now show it as "NEW".
Though 128GB SSD that CANNOT be upgraded (soldered to MB) is disappointing, the price and specs make up for it! Plus, I just happen to have a 2TB Samsung EVO 980 Pro NVMe in an enclosure just waiting to be put to good use. The timing of your video couldn't be better for me as I just ordered a GPU for my Razer Core X a day ago and the native compatibility will be so much better than with my 2012 Mac Mini or 2012 rMBP. I'm not sure I'll ever need to upgrade ram to 64GB, but it's good to know that's an option for later if needed.
    Thank you!

I noticed the serial number on the box (1:18), starting with Z doesn't match the one in the about mac window (5:16) which starts by H. Kinda strange

    • @lag0matic
      @lag0matic หลายเดือนก่อน

You're confusing the part number with the serial #, the box clearly has a serial starting with H.

These are great little machines, even in 2024. I recently bought a 2018 Mac Mini from Woot and noticed a scratching sound when it reads/writes, almost like an old hard drive. After some research, I found that people back in 2018 and 2019 mentioned that their units had the same issue, stating it was coil whine from the capacitor of the SSD and/or GPU chip. Some said this noise is normal for M.2 PCIe SSDs, while others said their machines were whisper quiet. My 2012 i7 with a SATA SSD is silent, so it’s odd hearing this. Every time I do something, I hear a 'Krrrrr' sound. Has anyone else who bought one from Woot experienced this? Maybe this is why Woot could sell them as 'New'-perhaps a slight manufacturing defect in this batch? You never know how Woot came across these units. I figured I’d ask for the consensus before setting up a return.

You’re right. When I bought it, it was listed as Renewed, and it also showed up on Woot’s website as a sale. Now it’s not on the Woot site, and it’s more money on Amazon.
My hope is that they occasionally list them on Woot on sale and they drop on Amazon also. Just letting people know to keep their eyes open in case they’re looking for one. Thanks for watching!

nice !! I too switched to M-series Macs but still have a thing for the Intel Macs - almost like a sort of nostalgia, I don't know. Just the fact that MacOS can smoothly run on two completely different CPU architectures is fascinating. I would like to see Apple re-adopt the Intel chips (as the new Lunar Lake chips are pretty much as efficient as Apple silicon) - would be amazing to have a choice at the checkout - what you want, x86 or ARM ? :) Would be so cool. Anyway, hope you find some time to do some comparisons between the M1 mini and this 2018 mini. Cheers `!!!

I used to buy a lot of "refurbished" PCs from Dell's refurbished store. Most of them looked like they were brand new.
My guess is that Dell wanted them off their inventory so Dell called them refurbished and then lowered the price. There are all kinds
of laws against selling something used and calling it new, but nothing against selling something new and calling it used.

@@blasegangbeats1865 That is a shame. I did not know they were soldering the SSD before the M1 Macs. It kind of makes it not worth it. This model only had 3 years of support left if Apple does what it usually does and I done my calculations correctly. Apple only support 3 version of their OS at a time. Next summer they will release a version this model does not support. The next summer after that then it will be on the last version Apple will support and the year after that it will not be support it all.

    • @Lesydian

Sadly 2018 is when Apple started to solder RAM to the MB.
So the easy answer is "no". If you're skilled with a heat gun and chip replacement? MAYBE???? But you'd risk ruining your computer trying it out.

Serial no. staring with Z is custom order
Refurbished would have F in the serial number.
this is most likely unclaimed custom order that was never opened.
