Gong Xiangyu (simplified Chinese: 龚翔宇; traditional Chinese: 龔翔宇; pinyin: gōng xiáng yǔ; born 21 April 1997) is a female Chinese volleyball player. On club level, she plays for Jiangsu.
She was born in Lianyungang to a P.E. teacher mother who was once a national épée champion, and a policeman father who used to play for the Jiangsu U23 basketball team. Her given name Xiangyu means "flying in the universe." She started attending Nanjing Normal University in 2016.
Junior
Before 2014, she was a setter. As a substitute player, she participated in 2012 Asian Youth Girls Volleyball Championship and 2013 FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship.
In 2014, because the former main opposite hitter, Ju Wanrong's injury, she began to be an opposite hitter and had success. During 2014 Asian Junior Women's Volleyball Championship and 2015 FIVB Volleyball Women's U20 World Championship, she showed her power.
Senior
She was promoted by Coach Cai Bin from the Jiangsu U23 team to Jiangsu Women's Volleyball Club in the 2015-2016 season. Following a successful debut season at the Chinese Volleyball League, she was selected by Coach Lang Ping for the national team in 2016. She represented China at the 2016 Summer Olympics and won the gold medal. She participated at the 2016 Montreux Volley Masters, 2017 Montreux Volley Masters, 2018 Montreux Volley Masters and 2019 Montreux Volley Masters. - กีฬา

Gong is a true asset of Chinese Volleyball team. She is outstanding in spiking and blocking. C complements Zhu Ting -the real monster of volleyball of all time.

Her spike action looks so effortless yet could easily reach 80+. Also once she is in the air, it looks like she could hit the ball to go anywhere on the court. Amazing range of fire power !

Gong is very good, she receives & can even set. Zhang as well + zhu, they can all rotate and switch positions, defend well, block and kill the ball. Impressive team

Gong Xiangyu had so many great spikes also because Yao Di set the balls beautifully for her. I also saw Yao Di set the ball greatly for Zhu Ting.

One point should be noted is, in this video, most attack by Gong were set by YaoDi. We can see that Yao manage to create good chance for Gong, as Yao manage to fake the blockers, so Gong just need to face one blocker, or there is a large gap between blocker. So, I think this video can be a tribute to Yao as well.

Does Gong Xiangyu have anything todo with Taiwan?!
In China’s volleyball system, opposite spiker is usually not a top quality attacker, which is contrary to EU system.
So Gong is considered NOT BAD, but definitely replaceable...
China’s main attacker is usually outside spiker.
thats not true, in chinese system, the opposite need to be a good receiver, there is no opposite spikes in the world who can receive serve as good as she is

NO. China (at least Lang Ping) requires outside striker (主攻) to be a good receiver；it does not require opposite striker (接应) to be a receiver . That's why Gong's position can be replaced by Zhang, but not the other way around.

@@hudiemi that is correct. Even in the 2000s, China's system uses a receiving opposite i.e. zhou suhong, zhang lei, and zheng chunlei. Zhang Changning can be moved to the opposite because she receives. This system provides relief to the open spikers like Zhu Ting, who, although passes, is hidden from the serve receive in certain rotations wherein the OPP, like Gong takes on the role. This is the reason why Liu Yanhan has struggled to make the Olympic roster. She can't pass. Lang Ping puts a premium on passing, including for her opposites, whereas American and European teams usually user their right side hitters for blocking and attacking i.e. Slotjes, Boskovic, Egonu, Drews
