Gong Xiangyu (simplified Chinese: 龚翔宇; traditional Chinese: 龔翔宇; pinyin: gōng xiáng yǔ; born 21 April 1997) is a female Chinese volleyball player. On club level, she plays for Jiangsu.
She was born in Lianyungang to a P.E. teacher mother who was once a national épée champion, and a policeman father who used to play for the Jiangsu U23 basketball team. Her given name Xiangyu means "flying in the universe." She started attending Nanjing Normal University in 2016.
Before 2014, she was a setter. As a substitute player, she participated in 2012 Asian Youth Girls Volleyball Championship and 2013 FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship.
In 2014, because the former main opposite hitter, Ju Wanrong's injury, she began to be an opposite hitter and had success. During 2014 Asian Junior Women's Volleyball Championship and 2015 FIVB Volleyball Women's U20 World Championship, she showed her power.
She was promoted by Coach Cai Bin from the Jiangsu U23 team to Jiangsu Women's Volleyball Club in the 2015-2016 season. Following a successful debut season at the Chinese Volleyball League, she was selected by Coach Lang Ping for the national team in 2016. She represented China at the 2016 Summer Olympics and won the gold medal.

I love how her blocking has improved tremendously after Rio. She isn’t your usual Opposite but I really appreciate how she’s often the best non-libero passer in China’s team and is also stable on offense.
Gong seems to be striking the harder than she did a year or two ago. That's great for the Chinese team.
She is even stronger and more powerful now 2020 china league , top 3 score player i remember.

Gong Xiangyu could be the best all around player on the team and probably in volleyball. She's not best hitter/blocker/defender even on the team but she is above world class in all of her the three skillset area. The problem with that if there is another taller opposite hitter with much better skill (like another Li Yingying), Gong might get bump from the team. Lang Ping would try to keep her on the team.

She might not has power like Egonu, Boskovic or any strong opp from america, europe and brazil but I love her defensive skill, block and the way she pass the ball to Ding

What was the last commentary all about? Gong at 6'2" or 6'2.5" is one of the shorter Chinese front line players.
He thought the middle blocker got the block and he was referring to her.

He made a mistake and was talking about the middle blocker. In fact China is one of the tallest teams, on average, in the world.
The commentator thought it was Yang Hanyu who blocked...she is 20 y.o. and 194cm....in the replay, Gong was seen to have blocked...that’s all there is to it.
He meant someone else, besides Gong XY is around 1.87/1.88m, not that short
