      It's not always about power. Ball placement is more important.

      I don't know any other, of the various spikers, who's actually physically stronger than Gong. (I'm almost sure you meant in a skill manner, not in Gong's physical finesse. In pure skills, no doubt, she's not at Zhu's level; but She's 3 years younger than Zhu, so she could still become an elite player in 2-3 years.)
      Anyway, "only" 6'2" (which makes her taller than Japanese great "little man" 6'1" Yuji Nishida) but she easily jumps as high as 6'6" Zhu Ting or 6'4" Li Yingying.
      Zhang, at 6'5", also is high enough to just hop a few inches vertically and spike well enough, like Zhu.
      Every time Zhu Ting jumps, however, I hold my breath, because her skinny frame just makes Zhu look so fragile, even from the little hops she does to spike the ball. Even Li, at 6'4" and with more meat than Zhu, hardldy jumps like Gong.
      Gong, on the other hand, could run from the middle or even back of the court to spike high balls; and even when she lands badly, you know she has enough meat and bones to get up, very unlike the extra tall, extra skinny, fragile looking Zhu.
      Fortunately, for Zhu, she's so skilled in spiking, and so tall, she could spike hard or spike cleverly and hits target most of the time, with no need to do long runs for high jumps like Gong & other slightly shorter players...

    She might not one of the explosive opposite in the world but she is there to help the team. Serve, block, defense, receive and her spike placement was great eventhough rarely near 90km/h. Lang Ping aware of her potential to help the team and train her in different way. Some opposite hve good and powerful spike but make many mistake.

    She is a very smart finesse player! The Federer of Volleyball. Her spike motion looks so natural. She is always surverying the situation, even when she is up in the air. You could see that she could quickly sense the weakest link in opponent team, and put the ball in the most damaging place! I guess the USA team, Netherland team, or Turkey team would really love to have a player like Gong XiangYu!

    She’s not the flashiest player but she’s the most stable player of China. China’s passing and digging depend so much on her. I also love that as of late she’s been given a lot more sets than before and she’s improved on attacking. Will always root for her 💕

    Hi! This is Jetha Lama from Nepal. I have been watching continuously this Chinese Team from 2016 but I have never seen the service fault of Gong. Other almost players made & can make fault in service but Gong never as I watch. I am a great fan of Chinese Team since 2016. Li Yingyang is the most dangerous player for opponent Team.

  • @hg7269
    @hg7269 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The reason Lang uses Gong in the opposite, not Zhang, is that China needs Gong to defend spike of the opponent's opposite spiker, which tends to be heavy hitter like Egonu and Boskovic. Gong's defense and positioning is only getting better and better...

    People keep saying (im looking at you Clayton Lucas 😑) that they should convert Li Yingying as an opposite hitter, completely forgetting that there’s a whole Gong Xiangyu who’s also just as reliable or even more in that position. I get why Li Yingying becoming an opposite seems like the most logical thing to do because her being left-handed is also an added advantage, and the Zhang CN - Zhu T - Li YY seems like an explosive offense, but with this lineup they’d be sacrificing a huge portion of their defense. I love Li YY too, she’s a great offensive player and she has improved drastically, but I think it’s just fitting that they have a defensive opposite in Gong rather than a terminating one, because they already have Zhu Ting who is a reliable scoring machine, and Li YY’s receives aren’t nearly as consistent as Gong. I can feel she feels the most pressured right now because of how tough the attackers of China are, but I believe in a well-rounded player like Gong and not just offense. This is just my opinion, but Gong don’t worry we love you and you’ll be great 🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️

      Simon Golding also had this comment last VNL 2019 (I think that was during the Poland-China game). It’s probably natural to say this because we’re now used to terminating opposites but yeah, for China’s system it wouldn’t make sense to have LYY as opposite and they’ll just destabilze their passing. Plus, LYY was trained as outside spiker even when she was young and her approach in the right side is a bit awkward, bless her 😂

    • @megren1207
      @megren1207 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The team already has enough firing power, from Zhu to Yuan, Zhang and Yan. What they lack is stable reception and defense. In case anybody is wondering, China’s reception is not as consistent as their attack. They tried the Zhu-Zhang-Li lineup in 2019 World Cup against Brazil. It was a mess. And the fact that China really doesn’t have a good libero doesn’t help. Reception and defense simply collapsed.

      She's different intended opposite.
      Coz China strategy is different, she shouldered a lot more defensive duties as an opposite.
      She's very complete player can do all, attack, defend, block, even set. Her passing is the best in China team beside the libero.

      Egonu been silent with beautiful dug every time she spike.

      Let’s not forget that passing is the key to attacking for China. If they’re not in system they can’t set to the middles and their play would be very predictable. Look at the poor performance of the B team in 2021 VNL (before Zhu etc came) and compare it to the B team’s performance in 2019 VNL (finals). They were playing with almost the same team B lineup but the difference is Gong was in the 2019 team and stabilized their pass. In 2021 their passing was horrid. In 2019 team B even won against Italy’s team A.
      Also Gong has always been very stable in attacks and blocks. It’s just that for China it’s Zhu who gets set a lot of balls when out of system
