  • In this video I do a second test with the RK by King Kutter 7' Dual Edge Land Grader on a hard packed driveway. I had it on the RK 55 Tractor with loader. We are still waiting for spring to arrive and at least got a little done today taking care of the chickens and the deer feeder as well as some seat time on the tractor.

    Just pulled the trigger on a land pride GS1548 land plane. I run a small tractor service company (A Guy With A Tractor) and driveways is one of my most common job. After I broke the main pin on my 60” rear blade I decided on one of these. I picked it up Thursday and went straight to a job and omg I wish I would of had one of these the whole time I have been doing driveways. It easily cuts the amount of time needed to make it smooth in half. I have grown up using a rear blade only for the driveways. Also here in Georgia we call it “crush-n-run” too. It’s the best for these mountain driveways.

    I have been using a blade and rake to maintain a 1/2 mile driveway for over 25 years. But watching your very helpful and informative videos (Box Blade, Grading Scraper, etc), I got the bug for an upgrade. I decided to go with a 72” Kioti Grading Scraper w/scarifiers over a box blade. After using it for only a few days, I am pleased with the results. I have a hydraulic top link so I’m able to play around with different position, starting with level front to back, side to side. I find there are occasions when I want both blades in contract with the drive and other times (usually when wet) when it works better with the back blade slightly higher. Still experimenting, however. As a final touch, I run a rake over the drive for that perfect finished look.

    It's 1:00 pm EST right now sunny @37deg. in Coastal New Hampshire. It's not raining or snowing.....I'll take it!! I am so glad you made a video of using the land plane on your driveway! What a difference! Our driveway is about 30 years plus and hasn't really needed much until this year. It originally was surfaced with processed gravel and 3/4 crusher run mixed it setup like pavement!!! I thought that it was going to need a paving roller to really compact it, but a small dozer was all that was needed. I have been criticized many times for not blacktopping it, but I want to have a surface I can dig up for running underground electric, water lines, and drainage as needed, cutting into expensive pavement...it never looks right or is perfectly smooth after that. Oh yeah, it was way too expensive. Thanks, Mike for this demo type of video it keeps it real!

    Nice comparison Mike... I have a mile long, mostly gravel drive with hills and valleys... I have been fighting it for four years, as the previous owners didn't take care of it properly. It has become my part time job, though unpaid..... I found that a layer of 1-2" followed by the crusher works well, as our crusher is 3/4 minus. I have a smaller tractor and struggle a bit with it, but I love the box blade. I would like to have a land plane for the finish work, but I am not sure it's worth the cost and trouble. I just need to get better with the box.... and get a larger tractor.

    Boy you can really tell the difference between your driveway and the other Lane ,,on your driveway the plane was bouncing around cause your drive is so hard and compacted like concrete,, where the Lane was so loose a d full of stone it didn’t bounce around at all,,,almost like using it on dirt, because all the excess stone like you had said.. mine is asphalt and i put down a foot and a half of “Red Dog” they call it here in central PA ,, comes from the mines i believe,, and road on that for 2 years the put asphalt on top of that ,, was great for about 20 years then this season i have already noticed some decent size cracks in asphalt that will need patched with tar so they don’t get any bigger.. great video bud thanks again..

    Around here, crusher run is all 3/4 down to dust, which is great on flat surfaces, but the 1-1/2 would be better on hills where the larger stones would prevent washing a little better.

  • @Military-Museum-LP
    @Military-Museum-LP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    These look like river rock (we call round rocks in Italia) . Like you said, limestone crushed in a rock crusher. The cut edges lock. The lime dust blocks it all together. You might be better off hauling some if that useless round rock away.

  • @seanworkman431
    @seanworkman431 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now you make the point about the loose stone vs. 1 1/2" to dust, the difference in the finish is quite obvious. Another point is that with loose stone going to the side, if you get your wheels in there it is difficult to drive out of, especially when cornering while avoiding an oncoming vehicle. I hope the local property owners appreciate your guidance and continued assistance.
    What type of fabric are you suggesting for geotech? I have used different types for seawall soil retention.

    It looks like you could extent the top stabilizer a couple turns to lower your back blade and you might want to raise the left side a bit to help maintain a crown on the driveway. With regular grading, it should pack in hard and smooth.

    HI MIKE. GREAT JOB. Suggestion, Level the land plane front to back and it will work a lot better. your using the front blade only the way you have it set. works, but more passes are needed to get end result. I have a 1/2 mile driveway that climes over 100' i get wash boarding because of the climb. land plane dresses that up in about 30 minutes. Great job.

  • @davesmith8936
    @davesmith8936 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your land plan has not been working (from the video) the same as others I've seen on TH-cam. I think I finally figured it out. In video #2 of the 3 part series you said the cutting edges are also adjustable. They look like they are set about 3/4"-1" below the sides. I think the key to the land plane is the sides need to act as skids and the cutting edges should be set flush or at most a hair (maybe 1/8"-1/4") below the skid level. Just a thought as I'm no expert.

    It seems to me like that thing is meant to be used on the right side of the road, as it angles to the left to throw gravel toward the middle, crown of the road. I have never used one either so I don't know. I still just use a front loader and a box blade for my 200 yd long driveway.

    If you can get some recycled asphalt the stuff they grind off the road before they repave them put it down on a hot summer day and roll it or drive over it it will harden up almost like pavement but you can regrade it when you have to. Some places almost give it away, Especially if you close to a major paving project..👍🏻

    Hi Mike, have you tried using your rock/landscape rake on the driveway? It can really help pull the extra gravel up from the sides and distributes it very well. I'd call it your fourth option.

    • @python3574
      @python3574 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use my rake on the gravel road that goes up the hill to our cabin for just that reason. Not to mention there's a lot of natural large rocks (3"-4") that heave out of the ground every year (although I'm beginning to believe rocks are the number one crop here) and the rake is the only attachment I have that handles them well without violently jumping over them. The box blade does it all the time and dumps half the load its carrying every time it jumps a large rock. Major PITA.

    We are in the process of building a 350 yard drive and I am using almost the same method you used in constructing your road.
    Thanks and keep the good videos coming!

      I assume this is similar to all the problems cows have digesting so much corn. When designed for Grass and Forbs...

      We have never seen signs of that problem around here. I think (but not positive) that its because deer around here get corn almost year round. The farmers don't harvest till late fall, myself and others feed spring, summer and winter. I think what can happen though is in areas where there are no farms, and nobody feeds then all the sudden someone dumps a ton of corn for the deer they can get sick because they aren't used to it.

    The chickens and deer feeder were a great intro. Love your vid’s. I have a question, Mike: “Please educate me as to why you reverse your tractor instead of turning around and running the opposite direction? Aren’t you wasting gas and increasing your workload?” ...I’m sure you have a logical explanation.

      In that case I wanted to pull excess material all to one spot then I scooped it up with bucket and put it on a soft spot on the road going to my firewood area

    Landplanes are prone to skipping on hard pack which i noticed yours did so hope it you got that worked out cause otherwise its a washboard effect

    I've used a blade before but nether a land plane or a box blade. What would you recommend for a gravel driveway for a first time buyer?

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ronald Lupardus, I think if your driveway is in pretty good shape and just needs touches up once in a while a blade or land plane. (Blade of you have a lot of ditches to maintain) if your driveway is really rough often box blade

    • @ronaldlupardus4337

      Thank you. I thought the box blade maybe a bit much So i will definitely be purchasing a back blade.

    Good video the only problem I see is it looks like you took all the crown out of the drive if you’re not careful it will start washing

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans

      Its all pitched to one side, the side where I want the water to go, also I will be putting some crusher run on it soon. First stone in over 20 years

    I'm no expert but seems like your top bar should have been longer to allow both blades to work. The rear blade seemed to do little or no scraping

  • @joshbeckett223

    So in your opinion box blade or land plane? From looking at what you did you could do that with a box blade but you definitely couldn’t make that land plane work as a box blade. Are you allowed to give your true opinion?
    Looked like a smooth driveway either way. Good job sir

      Hah Hah, I can say or do whatever I want. I haven't done the video on box blade yet but have used them for years and it is my favorite. However it seems to be a little easier to get a really smooth finish with the land plane but all in all the box is more versatile. Make sense?

    How well would this work on a road with small sealed do you think?

      Mc Luvineer, small sealed?

    • @mcluvineer358
      @mcluvineer358 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a logging road with crushed run on it. It has small sealed on the way down to divert water. Not sure how that would handle the sealed. The road is pretty steep so I need them there.

      I am going to be putting some stone on it, Crusher run, I haven't had to in 20 years, I won't really crown this section, its short a just pitched a little to the side I want the water to go
