- I'm very glad finally we could get some new music by Amy Winehouse.
''In 2015, four years after singer Amy Winehouse's death, Universal Music U.K. CEO David Joseph announced that he'd destroyed all of her demo recordings in an attempt to prevent anyone from releasing them posthumously. Despite that, composer Gil Cang, who wrote songs for Winehouse early in her career, has posted a Winehouse track called "My Own Way" to TH-cam.
Cang, who co-wrote the scratch track with James McMillan, announced on the TH-cam post that the song is one "we love and want the world to be able to hear." He says he recently rediscovered the recording, made when Winehouse was in her late teens, and decided to share it.
In an interview with the Camden New Journal, a newspaper outside of London, Cang says he and McMillan "had been writing quite a lot of pop tunes, doing a lot of pop promos with various artists who would come in, many of various, dubious talent. It was at a particularly dire time in the pop world - lots of terrible, terrible girl bands and boy bands and we had to make something for them. Amy came in to see us, opened her mouth and just blew us all away."
In 2011, Island Records, a division of Universal, released a compilation album of Amy Winehouse B-sides and demos selected by producer Mark Ronson called Lioness: Hidden Treasures. A second compilation was released in 2015 as the soundtrack for Amy, a documentary about the singer's ultimately tragic life''.

She was stunningly beautiful...and yet so broken. No matter how many people claim they loved her, it would simply fall on deaf ears. In order to receive love you have to first love yourself--otherwise you don't even recognize love as love. For many people this lesson can last a lifetime. She would toss and turn like the wind, experimenting with different things to abuse herself because broken people only associate themselves with pain. Mental health issues, destructive relationships, substance abuse, cutting behaviors, body image dysfunction are all symptoms of an inability to receive a love that is whole and complete. I recognize the pain in Amy because I suffered the same, minus the amazing talent of course! I felt a kindred spirit to Amy and wanted to 'defend' her honor because I believe many of her behaviors weren't the result of a 'drug addict gone off the rails', but rather a intensely sensitive person deeply wounded and hurt. The cliche that our problems originate in childhood are sad but true. If she had resolved with the pain caused by her parents divorce and her dad's subsequent abandonment, I am pretty sure she'd still be alive today. Amazingly enough she was insightful enough to identify the cause of her pain, but her fear of parental acceptance overshadowed her ability to process it. Understanding her story helped me overcome my challenges. I sincerely apologize for the armchair analysis, especially if I offend. I did not know Amy or her music when she was alive. When I discovered her music I was blown away by her voice, so I dug deeper. When I heard her story I just sobbed. I am so sorry you weren't fixed, Amy. You deserved it.
*Thanks* for the analysis -- it's good to know that a growing number of people understand the massive force of early-life experiences on the trajectory of every life. The more seriously we take the role of parents, the less unhealthy and troubled the population will be.
The fact that her father is a textbook narcissist and won't take responsibility for his emotional unavailability from Day 1, and his actual abandonment of the family when she was a little older but still very young, enrages me to this day. Yes, he was a broken person, too, and presumably he did the best he could at the time -- but then he did nothing after her death despite a huge number of people speaking out about the traumas that shaped her. His complete obstinacy, his refusal to examine his own behavior, his vilification of those who simply point out the truth about his deficiencies -- completely unacceptable.

This song sounds quite more pop-like and immature than her album songs, still a gem considering she was only 17! It's so great to keep getting some of her unreleased songs once in awhile.
It actually sounds more mature to me; more jazzy and closer to her original jazz roots before she became more commercial sounding.

For a 17 year old this is absolutely incredible. Brilliant lyricism and stunning vocals. It is a bit unpolished in its instrumentation imo.

Thank you for posting this, it’s honestly such a rare song more for her being only 17, and literally recording this in 3 takes the day before 9/11.. it’s a great catchy tune, there’s also another mysterious winehouse song recorded … if you look up any winehouse old school, a snippet of the backing track will appear and there’s a link on the video that shows it was a random guy who produced the song and uploaded it in 2010 on soundcloud. Sadly he took it straight down and nothing of that so my is traceable but the backing - I’m tempted to start a petition to get it released , but this is perfect!!

If you read the info above, she recorded this when she was 17 -- she hadn't even released _Frank_ yet. (My understanding is that she needed demos to send to record cos., to pique their interest.)

Why was this left off Lioness!!! I know her... The music was closer to who she was than she could project with her appearance and chit chat... It probably would have happened to me... She's like my generation's Rickie Lee Jones, something very familiar, yet something so original. Like she grew up in her own unique neighborhood, with a certain accent in America, but you can pinpoint where, but it's genius and so special!
Please -- she was miles better than RLJ, who was a bit of a Joni Mitchell wannabe and who lacked the intensity and authenticity of AW.

I love this song it's my favorite. Her death was a great loss. I don't understand why someone who knew her didn't stop her taking drugs get her parents involved if my kid was on drugs I would kidnap them & get them off drugs
You should watch the docu AMY.
(1) You can't kidnap anyone for any reason -- it's illegal.
(2) You can't make an addict stop -- they have to want to stop.
(3) She was clean at the time of her death; she died of alcohol poisoning, and her dr thinks it was an accidental OD (Amy's body had been weakened by anorexia/bulemia, so she didn't know what was a safe quantity to drink, tho arguably she shouldn't have been drinking at all).
(4) The friends who loved her DID try to get her to rehab, but she wouldn't stick with it, partly bc her incredible asshole of a father -- whom she trusted -- didn't push her to stay.
(5) Addicts are self-medicating bc they're in terrible pain; in Amy's case, her father did a real number on her. He abandoned the family (emotionally) by having affairs when she was a baby; then he left the family for another woman when she was 9; then -- because he's a selfish prick who never takes responsibility for anything -- he insisted that Amy had gotten over the divorce (even though by her early teens she was smoking, cutting school, and hanging out with older boys) -- he did nothing to make her feel safe and loved, and that's why she chased unsuitable, shitty, selfish, screwed-up men her whole life (such as Blake, who introduced her to hard drugs).
Add to the mix that she became a massively popular singer when she was way too young and emotionally fragile to handle the spotlight; that she never really wanted the spotlight but just wanted to be able to make music; that the press reveled in her downfall; and that her parents did NOTHING to address their failures to parent her -- should have insisted on family therapy when she was 9 or 10 and started acting out -- and NEVER took responsibility for the trainwreck of their marriage and family life (I can't begin to explain how harmful and re-traumatizing it is when the attacker does not take responsibility).
So it's very complicated.
