    I loved that part with "It's so cool!" It's from China "I like it 40% less..." I can see the Chinese community getting frustrated that Japanese and Korean soft power is much higher. As a Korean American growing up during 90's before we became cool, I felt the same way about Japanese soft power being so much more prevalent.

      The thing is having pride in being Chinese is link closely with being nationally Chinese as well. So thanks to that because of the actions of the CCP the world views those proud of being chinese as a problem considering again the actions of the CCP. Also Chinese voice acting sucks and this is from a guy who grew up watching chinese dramas with his grandma (the live actions are great but the voce acting in animation is so bad)

    A lot of people already commented about kung fu movies, and I think that's a huge Chinese export that maybe isn't as big as it once was. For my dads generation, Bruce Lee was the biggest star in the world, and I grew up watching things like Enter the Dragon or Jackie Chans Drunken Master. Kung Fu Hustle was MY favorite movie growing up, and it still holds up!
    For food, Cantonese food and Sichuan food are as good as any Korean or Japanese foods.
    On the flip side, growing up Japanese, I really shied away from things like Manga and anime because they felt too nerdy or fobby. So the grass is always greener...

    The real problem is that the stuff that's inside China isn't readily available to people in the west. The Chinese government made it a thing to separate their internet from the rest of the world. There's probably a shit tons of things that might be poppin' on douyin that would translate well over to the west but because they have separate internets it's really hard to have that exposure to Chinese trends and whatnot.

    • @aaronmontgomery2055
      @aaronmontgomery2055 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We can access the stuff you know? Its not even hard. What are you even on about. You can get a verified account and everything on douyin.
      The "good" stuff we get here and everything. Remember "Xue Hua Piao Piao" meme? The issue is that a lot of it is toxic like the A4 challenge (not to say the western trends are not toxic but it is a difference of what is acceptable).

    • @ponuni
      @ponuni ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@aaronmontgomery2055 Exposure is the keyword. Nowhere did I say we didn't have access to it. We lacked the exposure to it because all the Chinese creators are on their own platforms. You said it yourself that you actively went to search it out whereas if Chinese people were on the same platform as people in the west they'd be more exposed to it. Your normal everyday American isn't going to find out how to get on douyin. Exposure leads to random things catching on. If you're never exposed to something you never know what'll catch on.
      I'm also not aware of both of things you cited which probably proves my point. You're exposed to it because you actively seek it out or it's something people in your circle take interest it. It wasn't something totally random that you happen to have come across.

      @@ponuni Then why does American, Korean, and Japanese media go into the Chinese internet when it is heavily stopped by the chinese government? • @ponuni
      @ponuni ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronmontgomery2055 Because the soft power of these countries are already established. You can't just block it out. There will be people in China that will actively seek it out. Whereas Chinese soft power is non existent! So the Chinese have to put themselves out there more and it doesn't help that they can't do that because their government wants to keep them on their own platforms.
      Assuming this "she" is the reddit poster in this video? She is Chinese American so she's exposed to this "media" maybe through friends or family. If she wasn't Chinese you can bet her exposure to any of this is 0.

    The thing is, the formation and the spread of Korea and Japan’s pop culture is vastly different from each other. When postwar Japan started to become somewhat popular in the 1970s and 1980s, Japanese pop culture in general was extremely inward looking. The only thing Japan was interested in exporting was their automobiles and electronics and its own pop culture such as anime and music was only catered towards Japanese audiences. It was in the mid 1980s during the bubble economy when westerners started to become more interested in the hobbys of the average Japanese people and started adopting them by taking them home to their countries. Japan didn’t initially try to export them, foreigners came to Japan with interest and took them back to spread Japanese pop culture. This is why alot of Japanese pop culture in general has its own aesthetic/flavor because its main target are the native Japanese people and not foreigners. This is also why Japanese media even today don’t care for any social trends and political correctness thats happening in the west.
    Korea on the other hand is different. When Korea started to build up their entertainment industry, its initial goal was to spread them overseas. It didn’t bother to cater towards the native Korean people because its main target were overseas. This is why the Korean government invested tons to support Korean Wave in order to spread its influence throughout the world. And in the end, it was a huge success as you could see.
    Now with China, which one of these examples are they going to follow? Are they going to go with the Japanese model where it starts off inwards by building up authentic pop culture within China and wait until foreigners picks up on it and eventually let it spread? Or are they going to try the Korean model, where the government purposely “creates” a pop culture on their own and tries to sell them overseas? Honestly, China has the ability to do both. They have a huge domestic population, vast amount of ethnic Chinese living overseas that can act as a “bridge”among countries and also a powerful government enough to promote them overseas by investing tons of money. But you know whats truly holding China back? The lack of freedom among the general population and consumerism of foreign goods. You CAN’T expect to develop a sub culture or a pop culture without the people expressing themselves freely. Sub cultures are born by letting the younger people express themselves to the specific social environment they are in. You have to let those people naturally form their own “clique” or groups to let their expression and aesthetics shape itself. Whenever that stage is cleared without any government involvement to crack them down, let it naturally spread even more throughout the country and wait until you can make profit out of it. China can do this with the enormous amount of population they have. The problem is that the Chinese government is extremely sensitive to any type of social groups forming within the population and will do anything to suppress them if they feel threatened. Hence why the Chinese population has the tendency to depend on foreign pop culture if their own domestic entertainment is not their taste. Honestly if you are a Chinese American, don’t depend on China to form its own “cool” pop culture. It probably wont happen with how the country operates. Its political structure is not suitable for any type of authentic sub cultures to be born. Even if there would to be with the “guidance” of the Chinese government, it most likely wont be authentic to the general Chinese population. Sub cultures has to resonate with the general population, especially the youth. Chinese Americans(or any other Asian Americans) has to form their own identity and sub culture that can be resonated and spread among other Asian Americans.

During those days other ethnic groups and races all wanted to become Chinese. Then it shifted to Japan, now it's Korea. Chinese were the first Asians in America and helped build the country, it's only natural that Chinese become more "boring" and less "exotic" as most other Americans just take Chinese for granted after a few generations. Very cool conversation. I became a fan of Chinese dramas, and thus became much more interested in all the recent China news, culture, state of religious freedom, etc. I pray for the Chinese people, and it's hard to get a full picture of life within the nation's borders due to the language barrier. But, Chinese dramas have a lot of creative and unique perspectives, and through them I see the creativity, intelligence, and artistry of the people behind them. It's just one tiny sliver of China, and not any more real than Hollywood, but when I pray for the people in China I can appreciate the stories they've brought to life and all the people behind the scenes who made them possible.

It's just that countries that are jealous are doing their very best to make sure people don't know about it through their media channel. Just for instance why is Fungbro not getting more views because their contents are great. This is meant to be the anti Chinese decade if not century. It's a strategy is what I am saying. Some people believe the rise in popularity of K-pop was to offset Asian hate in certain parts of the world. DBSK was probably a cooler group compare to current K-pop groups but they were not popular in the world. So if someone is jealous of you, then you should be proud that you are doing something right.

    China is cool because we are the scapegoat for everything negative about asia.
    - horrible working hours, Japan and Korea aren’t different.
    - dirty street food, I’m sure a lot of Asian countries all have this issue.
    - slanted eyes, that’s common among Asian countries.

    China has 8X the population of Korean and Japan Combined.. The Chinese entertainment industry doesn’t cater to them or the west that much because the potential to sell is higher in China, they got near 1.4 billion potential purchasers there. Where as Japan and Korea have relatively low population.. therefore in order to be a millionaire in entertainment Koreans and Japanese people (more so Koreans) almost have to source fans and purchases of merch from outside Korea/Japan…. Fan Bing Bing as a Chinese actress has the same net worth as Angelina Jolie which both are beyond the scale of any Korean or Japanese actress. Just as Americans don’t cater to other countries that much China does the same.

    China is the only super power in the world that's able to compete with the US now. I don't get why Chinese Americans don't feel proud and confident as being Chinese ... For a Chinese girl from China like me, Chinese culture is really cool. Thousands of years of history, all the classic literatures, the architectures, movies, different types of local music, the Chinese mythologies, Wuxia novels, and the recent game black myth wukong, aren't they not cool??
    I think the biggest issue to cause this is that Chinese culture is way more difficult for the westerners to understand due to the huge language barrier and lack of background knowledge. For instance, Black Myth Wukong might be popular now globally but I bet a non native Chinese player would not understand the meanings behind each story, and why the Characters and lines were designed that way...
    For Korean and Japanese culture, I might be wrong but i feel like they are quite whitewashed and Westernized and have been losing their own stuff. I'm happy that Chinese culture is able to maintain its own uniqueness considering how popular and strong Hollywood is in Asia.
    American culture is cool. I love Taylor swift, Ariana Grande, and Demi Lovato. I love American musicals such as Chicago and Hamilton. But these don't make Chinese Culture less cooler. They are just different.

    softpower is a much harder bubble to grow and maintain than hardpower and can collapse or burst much easier and faster. only a few countries have achieved to establish but even the majority of the 1st world countries don't have this honor. germany for example is the largest economy in europe. but if you ask people around the world about germany typical answers will likely be luxury cars, beer, sausage, oktober fest and nazis. not really softpower.
    in the 80s western germany had more softpower than today. "neue deutsche welle" which was similar to korean hallyu wave. but that was a different time and only memories are left

    China has always had a negative PR image on the world stage for a multitude of obvious reasons. Economic prosperity is only one half of the equation. It's a hard sell when the country is widely perceived to be a quasi-dictatorship. It's like how oil rich Middle Eastern nations are considered pariahs in the West despite their industrial boom. If democratic and socially liberal attitudes don't follow, it won't matter how wealthy a country becomes. Any civilization that wishes to achieve sustained longevity must not actively repress its own populace. Tyrannies always reach a tipping point before they devolve, it's inevitable.

    • @1stHalf
      @1stHalf ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not what is happening. The thing that will ruin China is the population is declining, just like the other countries in the world. Majority of Chinese accept the rules willingly. They all have the choice to leave. People like Jackie Chan would rather have safety than freedom. They think America has too many people dying for no good reason. They think America is not a first world country because your kids are in danger when they go to school. Mass shootings every month and all the drug abuse from the poor to the rich. America isn't even true freedom, it's a false freedom. You guys are spied on by NSA and all the CCTV's. America doesn't allow you to say certain things like yelling fire in a theatre or yelling you have a bomb. You can't carry bombs. True freedom means all of that included. China is fucked up but so is America. America is run by companies and war. China is run by an ego driven lunatic.

    There's been a remarkable improvement in Chinese soft power lately from its nadir ~2 years ago. Chinese web novels are huge internationally. Chinese video games and films and tv series are also becoming popular and mainstream. Chinese Tiktok and Temu/Aliexpress and Shein are dominant. Chinese hanfu and traditional practices are returning to prominence. And Chinese electric cars and smartphones will soon be as ubiquitous as all the other 'Made in China' products. And Chinese culture has always had broad appeal, be it martial arts or food or philosophy or festivities, though not to the same intensity among youths as Japanese anime and Korean kpop. Chinese soft power will continue to grow, even with all the baggage and headwinds, because such things grow with hard power.
